TTRPGs & D&D

TBF I don't think knowing the broad outline of it would really spoil it.
Oh for sure. But I used to read adventures cover to cover, so I'd know everything that was supposed to happen. Once I stopped doing that, I also just sort of stopped paying attention to published adventures more generally.

DT sounds like the most straight forward adventure ever.

So Diablo the paper game?

Isn't Diablo just D&D but on a computer?

Yeah, it was initially Matt's sample dungeon for new DMs, but because of when that video released and the reach it had, the Delian Tomb is probably one of the most played modules of this D&D generation that isn't a WotC official one.

Question for the room: running a game at a restaurant (a gaming friendly one) - yah or nah? Half of one of my groups got very excited to learn there's a local place that rents rooms to play D&D in and I'm like "this is my actual fucking nightmare, DMing at a restaurant" but I feel a little bad at how VISCERALLY I don't want to. Wondering if I'm just a weird introvert or if it sounds as awkward to anyone else as it does to me.

Is it a private space? Sure.

But I'm also the kind of person that would run something out in the open.

But.

I can appreciate even the anxiety of a waiter coming in to top off your drinks.

You know what now that I'm saying this out loud to you, kind of a No. Just sounds like extra disruptions even if it's just someone else being loud in the restaurant proper. And the waiter. I've convinced myself.

Yeah, no.

I get annoyed when people in my games are Uber eating stuff mid game. Sort your snacks out before we sit down. It's one thing to get up and grab a cold drink or crack into the cookies, 2 hours in, but placing an order and then unwrapping everything and treating it like it's meal time. Nah man, the table is for two different uses at that point. Don't mix it up.

I am much more extroverted and comfortable with things like this but... Yeah you've got me triple posting on how no this is for me the more I'm thinking.

I mean I've DMed for money, I've DMed on podcasts, for audiences, so it's not so much a cringe thing as my god, restaurants are noisy, disruptive, full... I also don't want my books smelling like cooking oil.

This might actually be Service Industry Doc's past self screaming I WONT GO BACK YOU CANT MAKE ME

I can't imagine I would ever ATTEND, let alone RUN, a game in a restaurant. I can't think of a single redeeming element of that idea. Not one. Every part of it sounds bad.

They were like 'Someone else can run a one shot!' and I said no judgement on 'em, just not my thing, no interest. I play these games to relax and escape, and doing it in a restaurant is like, I dunno, turning building Legos into a competitive sport or something.

I just don't understand the appeal. Why would anyone WANT to do this? Definitely just isn't for me, I guess.

Supreme extroversion. Granted I'm one bad day away from going full hermit and have joked that at this point I'd volunteer for one of those one-way solo space missions just to get away from humanity but...

I may be envisioning this one differently than everyone else and it's coloring my read of the situation. For me, while I don't think it would be my ideal space, I think I could do it and wouldn't necessarily mind. There is a gaming "tavern" very near my place and I've often been tempted to go and check it out. Largely what stops me is none of my gaming groups are local, or else I'm sure we would've tried it at some point.

The place local to me it's a private room with a gaming table and seemingly a setup for at least some eating to be done. I'd assume we get there and eat first, and then play. That way the table-talk is essentially paired with meal time, and we segue into the gaming right after. Not that dissimilar to how we used to do it when we all were in the same town and went to someone's house. I assume this would not be for a short session, but rather for something a bit longer.

And I think that's largely the draw. No cooking and no cleanup. Everyone can order off a menu and the food is taken away when you're done. And presuming it's a private room you aren't bleeding over into anyone else's space or time when you're having fun gaming. I don't see it as extreme extroversion because the version I'm imagining is not an open table for anyone to join and we're not in an open space where anyone can ogle us.

The one time I almost did go to the local gaming tavern was indeed when my out of town regular group all got together in one place for the only time during our 6 year campaign. We ended up at someone's house, but the Tavern was on offer simply because that way nobody would need to clean up for company or anything like that.

Yeah, a private party room is no different than doing it at a store or going to someone else's place.

But it's still rife with the distractions. I don't know. Everyone I play with has some sort of over-the-top neurodivergence they love to lean on, and I've gone to events and cons with then. I don't see it as a gain. Even at our private game on Friday nights, one of the kids is on tick tock the entire time with ear buds if it's not his turn. I'm not the DM so I don't really have a say on that but that's a no for me.

"ADHD "

Social courtesy?

Two of my players in one group have pretty bad ADHD but so long as they could move around a bit I think they'd be ok.

The group I play Cyberpunk with would 100% be fine. I've gamed with those folks for ages and there were plenty of times we simply had to game someplace like a study room at the university or something.

I do think group composition would be a critical consideration.

Thinking on it, I've done a fair amount of DMing in those sort of semi-public spaces. When I was working in housing for the university before getting the makerspace gig I have now, I ran for the freshman in an open game that was in a study room in one of the dorms and that was with one wall that was all window into the common room area. And before that I've done gaming at conventions that was basically on an open gaming floor.

I think perhaps I'm just desensitized to it. I don't think I'd choose a place like that over someone's home, but I could manage it and I don't think it'd be that torturous for me if that were the best option.
