Mattel DC Figures

As I’m approaching the “thinking about retiring age”, it would be easy if Todd is done in 2026 and I can sorta wrap things up in regards to figure collecting. Still a lot I’d like to see Todd do, but I’ll survive. I’m hopelessly cynical towards what Mattel brings to the table regarding action figures. All the rest makes perfect sense when you’re talking about all the other categories. Female directed merchandise, stuff for kids, interactive entertainment, board games, and vast markets Todd or Spin Masters can’t touch. Mattel is the 800 pound Gorilla. Todd is the baby marmoset from Instagram wrapped around a human finger.

But figures? They lost the license after 17 years. Lost it on apathy, neglect, and hubris. Not to mention too much Toy Guru. DCUC suffered from the same issue of too few females except for the fact that they made the “right” females. Just not a lot. All in all, Todd’s been pretty good on villains.

Wasn’t finished but hit post by accident.

I’m not sure what, if anything, Mattel can do to bring me back to the fold. I’m not changing scales again, and I’m not starting over with all the heavy hitters again. I like where we are with Todd at the moment. I’m not doing “classics” again. Another Jose Luis Garcia Lopez 1982 style guide inspired line is a non starter for me. I’d rather shave my head with a cheese grater. Count me in for the folks hoping Todd can work something out with DC, WBD, and Mattel.

About the only thing that would make me take a look is if Vonner was in charge.

I'm excited to see what Mattel has to offer but I'm not sure if I will be collecting the Mattel figures. I don't have one foot in the grave, but I have more years behind me than in front of me. I don't feel like starting something new, so I might stop when Mattel takes over. Also, it's expensive at $25 - $30 a figure and that might go higher. As far as McFarlane, I can see the 7" figures ending but maybe the retro lines can continue. I like Super Powers, Batman 66 & the upcoming Super Friends line.

Right there with you. Initially I was excited about this but then I got to thinking do I really need to start a new line that has the potential to be huge and never-ending ? I'm kind of hoping I hate them so I won't be tempted at all.

Glad I discovered this place - my main hope is that the political insanity is a distant memory by the time Mattel releases DC figures again, or really, much sooner. I am interested. If they do a Vonner Batman, or something that good then they could have Batman anchor a wave, followed by Superman etc. They wouldn't need to fire all their missile at once. I just hope they're inspired.

No one has made an Absolute Batman yet so I expect their initial launch to go there. What I am curious about is if they would dip into things they didn't get to last time - Granny Goodness, more LOSH, the figures we saw at SDCC like Hawkgirl etc. I expect new sculpts and articulation, but the same spirit as before.

I just want to be able to add to this display in a way that makes them look good together…

I’m guessing that the tariff stuff will be over fairly soon once all the posturing is done.

As to the Absolute Universe, I’d be surprised if Todd didn’t take his shot while he still has a chance. In spite of his pivot to more mainstream stuff over the last few years, he clearly still loves doing the alt figures and looks whenever he can. KC Superman, 1M Batman, Cowboy Batman, etc. It’ll happen before he’s done.

Hopefully with Mattel once again having the license they can keep figures in scale and we get a correct scaled Martian Manhunter and Lobo for starters and Batman not so damn much taller than Superman and a bad ass looking Hush that is in scale with Batman.

I really hope Mattel makes these new figures fit right in with all the DCUC's/DCSH/DC Multiverse/DCIE figures we already have. Even if they are updated in certain ways, I hope they are the same size and go pretty seamlessly with what we've got. I know we will be getting the main characters again, but I'm hoping they put in the likes of Geo Force, General Zod, Katana, etc. so we can continue to build are DCUC's collection.

Of course, if Mattel just does another 7" sized line like Todd just did, I won't have to buy anything, thus saving money lol.

Also, is Spin Master out of the picture DC wise? Will Mattel be handling the kid stuff and movie lines, or is Spin Master still allowed any DC action?

Man, I love all those parademons and that Jack Kirby! Great stuff, Thor-El.
Thanks, man! For the longest time I only had one of each Parademon. That’s all I could find at the time. But recently I’ve been finding good deals on them, so I’m building their forces.
