Diamond Select Toys is Shutting Down

Man, I really wanted that Eowyn and Witch King.

What a waste.

Lord of the Rings is still a powerhouse property. Before the news even broke that the DST figures would probably never happen, there were already people at other toy companies quietly asking questions about how they might get into making LotR figures now that DST won't hold the license.
It might take a while, but I believe we'll see 6-7" LotR action figures again before we're too old and grey to enjoy them.

My dream is Frazetta Girls can at least do the Frazetta art versions.

I wouldn't punt on Annihilus yet. He was pushed back 100 times and scheduled for release in spring/summer. If anything was done/on the boat, it's Annihilus.

To avoid retailers canceling items that Diamond actually has and will ship, I assume Diamond will be sending retailers a list of the pre-order items they have. Or, does the statement actually mean that all pre-orders are canceled? Either way, I assume we'll find out soon which, if any, pre-orders are happening.

I guess there's still hope that some of the lines will tranfer to NECA, and figures will be resolicited under NECA. This seems possible for the lines I care most about, Muppets, LOTR, and Walking Dead. Maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Was he done though?

Eowyn had the same updates on retailers, but then in this very thread they hadn't finalized if she had the alt head.

Yeah, LOTR is one of those evergreen lines. We're always going to be getting figures from it in some form, it's just a matter of having to start over from scratch that's a major bummer. Any new company that gets the license isn't gonna skip the Fellowship. Could they be better than DST's offerings? Sure, but starting from scratch means more money and even more time before they get around to the supporting cast. At least we got the full Fellowship and some baddies, but it felt like the line was just really starting to take off and smooth out (at least some) of the flaws. Never getting to other important characters like Bilbo, Elrond, Theoden, etc. is a major bummer. I know Figuarts is getting around to the license now too, but those are way more expensive than DST.

Was really looking forward to that Plo Koon statue too.

We don't know. I'm assuming yes from the target release date.

I think Annihilus was possibly shitcanned shortly after launch and Diamond didn’t bother to tell anyone. I mean he was first put up for preorder in Spring of 2022 and in that time we saw the releases of the Disney store exclusives comic shaded Black Panther and Avenging Captain America. As well as other mainline releases like Immortal Red Hulk, Crimson Dynamo, Classic Captain America and Iceman. Annihulus has been stuck in limbo with the more recent War Machine, Archangel and Hobgoblin. Maybe instead of thinking of him as a preorder that is set to be fulfilled, we should have been seeing him as a sign of the end times for Diamond and Marvel Select

I’m hoping Annihilus ends up getting in the hands of those Chinese Ko companies

I hadn't heard thet, surprisingly. Glad to, though.

Is it safe to say they would be of their own design and not following the DST template?

I would assume so. The closest to DST would probably be a particular company that already has an arrangement making action figure/action figure-adjacent products for Lord of the Rings. An extension of the existing licensing into the realm of 7" action figures would be fairly natural and logical. That is not to say that it will happen, of course.

Edit: Stressing the fact that I'm not saying anyone has directly approached the licensor yet or that any company has concrete plans (to my knowledge). JUST that it's been floated by at least two toy companies privately that it may be a good idea.

That's possible, too. We'll find out soon enough.

Apparently, some type of booth for DST was set up yesterday for SDCC. In the article, the author, Heidi MacDonald, speculates they may be using the space to liquidate older merch. That seems like a good guess to me.

Folks who attend SDCC, please let us know what's at the booth.
