Diamond Select Toys is Shutting Down

How exactly is the layout for Hall H distributed at SDCC? I’ve never been there before. Are the vendor and artisan booths distributed amongst the toy makers and bigger toy companies or is one hall for companies and then another hall for retail goods? Because in my head if Diamond is absent, the’ll just fill up that space with either a retail booth that slipped in at the 11th hour or give permission for one of the larger companies to occupy that space and double the size of their booth (maybe have one booth to showcase their products and use the tertiary space to sell exclusives?)

Hall H is a panel room that holds about 6,500 people. It’s where all the Marvel and big studio panels are held.

The exhibit floor consists of the rest of the ground floor. They try to space out some of the larger booths like the studios or Marvel and DC. They have a bit of an artist alley at one end and some actual comic vendors on another end but it’s a bit of a mix of the rest of the floor. You can have a toy company next to a T-shirt stand. Or a video game booth next to a statue company. Hasbro and Mattel are kind of in the middle of the floor and not super far apart from each other. I think they’re positioned by the loading docks to be able to bring in more pallets of merch. They can be some of the biggest lines of the con for exclusives.

Not sure how a last minute cancellation would work for booth space. Might be hard to get someone to take it last minute. If it’s empty space, it will get filled up by bodies or something quite easily. Personal space is non existent basically everywhere at the con.

It's probably a situation like NYCC where Diamond had already paid for the space and there was no way to get a refund. Only now they may not have any employees to staff a booth. I'd guess it's going to be empty or just get absorbed by nearby booths or a space for some generic SDCC merch or something. If Ad Populum got it in the sale, maybe they'll make use of it somehow.

I guess they could always just put a placard or a photo booth there for fans to take pictures with cosplayers and such

New article on the subject as Image gets involved. Diamond is holding some 3M worth of their assets, much of which was supposed to have been transferred to Image’s new distributor last year, but Diamond instead held onto. To make things extra spicy, Image is alleging that Diamond intends to steal their stock and sell it for pennies on the dollar to Ad Populum suggesting the two are working in concert over all of this. Perhaps that has something to do with Diamond suddenly preferring their bid over Universal’s? The next hearing on the subject is in August.

Since they’re still trying to figure out which parties get paid first it might mean all activities are frozen for now as the court may have to approve all sales. It will certainly be easier for them to sell any product that they own and which no one is contesting said ownership over.

There are several companies/entities in that situation. Diamond has millions of dollars of stock that they are in possession of but that doesn't belong to them and they are refusing to return to the rightful owners.

Apparently, retailers started getting the below message late yesterday, as reported in the below article. I guess we'll see which, if any, of the pre-orders have already been produced and shipped. I was really hoping that Ad Populum had plans for DST. I guess not. At least this is some definitive news....

"Please be advised that, due to Diamond Select Toys' (DST) closure, outstanding orders for any DST product not yet received by Diamond will not be filled."

Welp.

That settles that. I was on the fence about selling my DST LOTR stuff. Looks like I may just end up doing so.
