U.S. Politics

Because I just watched people get morally outraged by a reporter interviewing a child who survived a school shooting with parental permission but NOT by another school shooting
I thought it was ghoulish at first, then I thought it might sway some public opinion. Not that public opinion is really the issue stopping us from passing gun legislation in this country.
And after seeing the Democrat win the deep red Iowa state Senate special election by 10 points (Trump won the area by 20 points) I don't know that people aren't already feeling the problems which seemingly will get much worse going into 2026.
Very encouraging. It looks like Trump 2.0 is as toxic as Trump 1.0. There could be some Senate seats unexpectedly up for grabs in 26/28. Hugely important, per my post at the top of the page.
Apparently the Iowa special election while sweeping had a 25%ish turn out rate. Not sure if Republicans stayed home out of disgust or disinterest.
Hopefully some of these people (even just 1%) are disillusioned by Trump making their lives worse and they give up on politics altogether.

During the first Obama term, had a co-worker who never voted before. Could have 2000 on, just never did. For anything. Local. State. President.

Decided he was going to vote, and spent some time deciding who he liked.

He did vote for Obama. Not because he liked him. But because that was what the polls were predicting and he decided he didn't want to be on the losing team.

Oh yeah, I also work the polls every time in Ontario because it's easy spending money.

Ever since 2016, huge uptick in write ins for Trump. How do I know this? Because when they are submitting the ballot to me, or just walking out they make a point to tell people. Couple years ago right after quarantine when we had an election, some kids came in and stood on a chair and started yelling. Trump rules make America great again.

Again, I'm in Ontario. Since 2020, it's always some "broccoli headed pencil neck Ratatouille chef what I'm told is pretty boy to the youth" type that's doing that kind of instigating.

And that's why I know that gamergate and Milo and Jordan Peterson all the others really did get into the youth and that infection is still going.

I also worked polls for a few elections in Los Angeles. (I was basically there ONLY to ensure the ballot machines worked properly and repair then or replace them if they didn't, I was strictly not allowed to touch ballots or interact with the public.... dream job really heh.) They kicked one guy out for announcing he was voting for Trump, citing that no one can campaign for candidates within so many yards of a polling location. They kicked a guy out with a trump shirt as well.

Nothing like marking the first day of school with a deadly school shooting: 'Merica! - Where we're always winning!

I swear the Iowa thing makes me lean ever more into the possibility that 2024 was a sham. That's an ENORMOUS swing for something not to have been squirrelly in the original election.
