Mattel DC Figures

If they just re-made all the DCUC decisions but with modern 6" figure techniques, I'd be all-in. I wasn't collecting back when that line was a thing, but in retrospect, they hit all the notes I would've been really into. The mid-80s is my Golden Age for comic character looks, and the occasional dip into Superfriends was a delight.

Buuuut, I know nothing about current Mattel figure philosophies. I would want a line that could stand alongside my Marvel Legends figures and not look out of place, but I don't know if that's what Mattel does.

If I’m being honest, I think returning to Mattel is a step backwards. Literally the only thing I miss from them is more 70’s Kirby characters.

As strictly a Marvel fan boy before, Mattel is what got me into DC figures in the first place. I knew of the big DC characters obviously, because who hasn't heard of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, etc, but I had never read a single DC comic or watched any of the DC movies. All of my childhood friends were huge Marvel fans and would always talk about how DC was so inferior so I never had a desire to even look into the comics. It sounds crazy but there was a real hate-on for DC in my childhood friend group.

One day I was in Walmart looking for Marvel Legends and saw the Flash posed in a running pose in his packaging and I was really enamored because I always thought the Flash was cool even though I really didn't know anything about him aside from the fact that he ran fast. I ended up grabbing him and then that became a slippery slope as I caught up with the previous wave or two. Then I needed to learn who these characters were so I bought a copy of the DC encyclopedia and then the New 52 thing came out in comics and I subbed to all 52... My comic shop really loved me for a while and then I decided that was too much and cancelled them all after about a year and no joke the comic shop went out of business soon after. I'm sure it wasn't my fault, he was a really crappy businessman and was constantly screwing up my subs.

So Mattel opened up a new fictional world for me all because they posed a figure looking cool in the package. I hope that their new line is an upgrade of the old one. I always hated their hip articulation. I don't have to be able to display it with my Marvel Legends because truthfully they are going into a different room on the opposite end of the house but it would be cool if they were 6" like the old Mattel figures. I want to be able to slot the new ones in and gradually replace the older stuff like I've been doing with my Hasbro & ToyBiz Legends for years.

As someone who has hated the McFarlane line since the beginning and has actively rooted for the line to return to Mattel - I'll still say that I'm withholding judgement until we see the plan from Mattel.

My favorite days of Mattel figures where when they were doing the DCUC and MOTUC with most of the sculpts done by the Four Horsemen. I feel like the Masterverse line is a huge step back from the MOTUC days, so I have no interest in seeing that type of evolution for DC figures. I only very rarely buy WWE or Jurassic Park figures so I don't have a strong feeling on those Mattel offerings.

I think my ideal would be for Mattel to rebrand back to something similar to the DCUC line with updated articulation, sculpting and pinless technology. I have a strong preference to return to 1:12 scaling, but I could probably live with something only slightly larger as long as it wasn't anywhere near as big and wonky as McFarlane. I hate the ridiculously long legs and overall crazy porpotions on many McFarlane figures. Some of the oven mitt type hands on McFarlane figures look like they were intended for much larger scaled figures. Hasbro Marvel Legends is my #1 line and ideally I'd like something as close to that aesthetic as possible.

I've got at least one version of every character ever made by each of DC Direct / DC Collectibles, Mattel and McFarlane and easily my favorite was Mattel. I don't really have any interest in starting over and replacing figures but would look for the opportunity to add more characters and deepen the world building. I'd love to see more civilian characters and deepening of the Legion of Super Heroes roster. I've still got the LOSH 12-pack they did years ago, but there are a lot of key team members that were never made.

I fell out because Todd kept making the same guys, and ignoring big names. It took way too long to get a normal Wonder Woman. I just want some nice figures that hit the big names, and give us some of the weirder picks a lot of people wouldn't think of.

I recently came across my Top 10 DCUC wish list from back in the day -
1) Mera
2) Ragman
3) Poison Ivy - classic 60s/70s
4) Heat Wave
5) Professor Zoom
6) Black Orchid
7) Rima
8) Sgt. Rock
9) Ragdoll
10) Trickster
BAF) Granny Goodness

The only McFarlane I bought from my list was Sgt. Rock.

I had told myself I was only going to buy New Gods/Fourth World stuff from McFarlane. But of the three they've done so far, I've been disappointed in each of them. Kalibak and Darkseid are WAY the hell too big, and Orion looks weak and puny, not only compared to them but the body they chose to give him.

Definitely not giving Todd any more of my money. Eagerly looking forward to Mattel getting them back and (hoping, praying) they do Legends-style/compatible figures.

I’m still waiting for any company to give me my first appearance Joker straight styled from Batman #1. Always and forever my number one want.

@Beamish. I picked up the Ragman that Todd did. It's almost certainly one of the Top 5 figures that he's done during his time in the line. It is one McFarlane figure that I can honestly fully endorse purchasing.

Yep - I almost picked up Ragman, Clock King and a few others, but to be completely honest - the only reason I picked up Sgt. Rock was because I got him for like $9 on Amazon.
