So in honor of buying the NECA Jungle and City Predator I decided to rewatch the OG films for the first time in YEARS. Like pre-streaming, it's been that long. I have an almost perfect memory for story beats and dialogue so I don't rewatch movies much because I can literally recall entire scenes in my head on a whim. But it's been just long enough that I am absolutely floored by how much FILMMAKING ITSELF has changed between OG Predator and the last ten years. (I never saw Shane Black's The Predator so I watched it last week... meh.)
I should know this because I was working in film at exactly that moment in time when we made the shift from hard film to digital. But the establishing shots, the... mouth feel, so to speak, of the cinematography. A beautiful shot of Dutch in silhouette getting off the chopper at sunset in the opening sequence for no reason other than the filmmakers wanted one. I know in my heart there is fantastic filmmaking happening right now, but I feel like we lost something in the past few decades we'll never get back. Making bubblegum monster movies beautiful just because you could, y'know? I was looking at the cover of Ultimate City Predator's box, remembering how eerie and terrifying seeing the Predator standing on that ledge of an art deco building victoriously holding a skull in the air and thinking: modern audiences would think this was painfully slow. Aaaaand now I feel REALLY old. But man, the OG Predator and Alien films stand the test of time for craftsmanship. Elegant monster movies.
My photographic memory for story is slipping though cos I forgot Jesse Ventura drops a slur in the first five minutes of the film and I just clutched my proverbial pearls and went OH MY THE 80s THATS RIGHT THE SLURS WERE EVERYWHERE
