General Marvel Legends

I think you could make a good argument that 'only teach them what's in their direct view while they're young' is part of what creates bigoted, close-minded people that believe the way they live and the way their society directly around them is structured is the 'right' way and everyone else's way is 'foreign/different.'
I know some think that, I don't however. Kids 8 or so and under just think differently. Kids under 8 thinking the moon follows them around, that Santa is real, etc., doesn't mean they will think that in 5 years let alone their whole life. I think creating an environment where kids - regardless of age - are told some things are bad, that can linger forever and is harmful. But sometimes having them be accepting of things they don't even know exist (let along have an opinion on) may be a problem as well - even with the best of intentions. Once kids hit Grade 5 and middle school, I think all topics are fair game.

There is a famous story about how Sesame Street wanted to do a show on divorce, and the whole point was to try to address the fact that kids often blame themselves in a divorce and also to show that divorce was normal for some kids - so the thrust was reassuring Big Bird that the two characters (Susan and Gordon maybe?) that were getting divorced were not doing so because of him and everything would be fine. The test audience of the kids never got that - they agreed with Big Bird's initial though he must have been at fault. They never aired the episode.

For what it's worth, I also think it's worth mentioning that the average reader age for comics is very different now than it once was.

I have a good friend that owns a comic book store and it's very infrequent that he sells a comic book to anyone under the age of 40. It certainly happens occasionally and he does have some younger repeat buyers, but easily 95%+ of his sales are to buyers past that "mid-life" point.

It's really probably not all that different for action figures. I think the average age for action figure collectors also skews much older than it used to. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the vast majority of action figure sales are also to collectors over age 40.

My own sons are in their 20s now but I still have much younger nephews. They played with toys up until about around mid-elementary school (ages 7-8), but after that it was all video games and digital. They were never really into comics or even regular books at any point even when I bought these for them to try to get them interested. They also generally don't like to watch anything longer than a few minutes long and feel that it's torture to try to watch a movie or even a 30-45 minute episode of a television/streaming show.

Yeah - I mean the fact that a single issue of a comic now costs like $5 is a big barrier to kids buying floppies. Those are sold to the people who grew up buying them

I do wonder if there is a broader audience of younger readers through Marvel Unlimited though.

All methodologies with which I am familiar for child development would aggressively agree with this. It is of *dire* importance to expose kids to as much diversity as possible, way beyond just relationships. And not just “because woke” but because kids need that information to develop critical thinking skills, social skills, relationship skills . . . We don’t need to throw kids into the “deep end” just to do it, but “sheltering” kids is almost always problematic and certainly an enemy of healthy development.

Deep in the weeds now so I'll let it go after this, but you're actually touching on a personal bugbear of mine here. Because I think teaching kids that Santa is real is actively harmful for their entire lives. So I don't agree at all with the thought process behind 'doesn't mean they will think that in five years.' Because yes, that's true very specifically. But it's also very not true more broadly. I don't think people generally respect how much what we are told as children carries with us. It's not about those things informing what we think, it's about those things informing HOW we think.
I think when we focus in on the narrowest worldview around the child, we teach them that what is directly around them is normal and what they don't learn about at the same time is 'abnormal.'
Also... what Ace said while I was typing this.

But I promise I'll let it go. I don't think we're having a massively fundamental disagreement anyway, as this feels more like layers of what's appropriate rather than a gulf of 'it must be X or it must be Y.'

It looks like the conversation had moved on from Kitty, but I still want to say that you should never date your ex's little sister or your teammate's daughter (even if she is from the future).

As for Hank and Jan, I can't think of anything *less* stimulating than having a bug on my dick. But maybe having an ant poke a clitoris is magical. I don't know, I'll have to ask Ru's wife. (ZING!!)

(Just kidding, man. Could not let that punchline pass and picked a name at random)

Ru's wife
What the fuck? I wasn't even involved in this discussion!

I just sent that to my wife's brother the other day, which was even funnier than this heh.
That's a silly thought. Clearly she'd be prostate massaging.
Uh yeah, male G spot!

Per usual, I will let you wallow in your ignorance, saddened that my efforts to elevate your consciousness have been ignored.

Reviving the Avengers Wish List thread for upcoming polls next week.

Please add your own wish lists if you haven't done so already.

Please edit and replace revealed characters, like Skurge.

Also, I will only tabulate 10 heroes, 10 villains and one boxset. That's it. Anything over that will not be tabulated.

Can I just post a new list and you ignore any prior input, or does it mess your system up?
