Tracking toy tariffs

A customer in Austria sends us plastic trays for packaging of the product we manufacture for them. It's not something we pay for. They've been sending these trays for years, but first time for this year. Today the UPS account has a $714 invoice separate from the usual weekly invoice.

The trays arrived in a box about 50 lbs, valued at $350. The tariff was $700 and fees $14. The HTS code on the invoice was 9903.85.68, a 200% tariff for Aluminum products of unknown origin. There's no aluminum in the box. I waited on hold for over 1/2 hour for someone to give me an email address to file a dispute, something I could've found on Reddit in 30 seconds. I just sent the email and we'll see what happens.

Okay, they sent back an auto replay, "our team is currently responding to emails from the week ending 6/21/2025". Couple problems, if you don't pay your invoice, UPS will suspend your account after a certain period and there's a 9.9% late payment fee after 9/11 for this invoice.
Literally cheaper for your company to pay someone minimum wage to do nothing but call them on like seven different burner cells until someone answers. Fucking ridiculous.

Thankfully almost everything we buy is sourced in the US. I can't imagine have to deal with this on a regular basis, especially when it seems like a simple classification error. From their email, it sounds like they're going to request pictures of the item or some kind of paperwork describing it.

They also warn against sending duplicate emails because it will only increase the queue.

This 1000000% makes me think of this gif:

Yea basically. Thats about what I see in my head every time it comes up that "someone will stop him." Like, I'm not trying to be mean to you guys with hope. But I have none. And since I can't do anything about it myself, I'm just gonna smoke weed and buy action figures till the total collapse of this society. Then I'll probably just off myself. I don't have the energy, physical ability, mental capacity, or give a fucks to survive what happens after.

I'm not at all surprised they are that far behind. What a shit show and I feel really sorry for the underpaid workers who are probably having to sort all of this out.

If it isn't prepackaged, precut, precooked that I can heat up with a microwave, or someone else makes it & hands it to me in a bag through a window, I can't feed myself. My back, knees, and worst of all, my hands won't allow it. And I'm about a decade or less away from needing elevators & a wheelchair.

There is NO way I am fending for myself in a post-apocalyptic situation.

All's I got is enough rage to make me do something really stupid that might take one or two "bad guys" with me.

Infuriating.

Yeah I had my little keychain story earlier which they said they would walk back, and they did as of checking my account yesterday. But they never actually followed up after my pushback.

And recently an artist I admire sent me a gift of their special curated marker collection, and at some point all the paperwork was rewritten to say it was cosmetics and adjusted as such. No.

That one I'm waiting to hear back on.

I can't imagine those wait times in the US are getting any better with the current shutdown. I know Republicans have long wanted to sabotage the US postal service so they can privatize mail delivery, but I'm not even willing to give them that much credit here. I think they just don't know how to implement any of this stuff and the edict from above is, "Figure it out."
