Tracking toy tariffs

What do you want them to do? They got swept in the last election.

A ton of them wanted to fight the debt ceiling for the first time ever with no viable plan for what they would do with the government shut down, nor any recognition that shutting the government down makes DOGE's job even easier than it already is. Schumer looked like the adult in the room on that fight, but I realize most Democrats disagree.
(This'll be my last political comment in here other than tariffs to respect TSI's post above, just want to acknowledge your question quoting me.) Ten years ago I'd have a stronger answer for you. My anger's residual because we saw the dirty tricks for decades getting incrementally worse and they never pushed back with equal strength, but if I'm being generous, I'm mad that they had too much faith in the system. I'm mad that a government is, in the end, a gentlemen's agreement to play by the same rules and they believed it and so we're flat footed to stop things that a three-equal-branches government should be able to protect against.

But a Democrat got on an airplane and went to be a nuisance in El Salvator today and that took some courage. More of that. Be brave. Be trouble. Speak loud and do right. Can't do much else with the cards they're dealing with now.

But back to tariffs: I AM REGRETTING MY KICKSTARTER HABIT. These poor guys running board game or TTRPG kickstarters trying to get their minis into the US are dyin' out there. Got three emails today. Worst part is as a frequent Kickstarter backer, I always assume the project will be at least a year late, maybe two or three, and watching people yelling at these small publishers like they could've predicted the tariffocalypse is honestly depressing. I reckon Hasbro and Mattel can weather this, but these indie game companies must be lying awake every night in a cold sweat. Gonna cost me a few bucks to get my games, but I'm one guy who spent too much on minis, not someone trying to get a ship's worth of plastic into the country. Every kickstarter or gamefound email I get now fills me with anxiety on their behalf.

The tariff on Chinese goods is up to 245%. Can someone good at math tell me how much a Marvel Legend will cost now?

No one is at risk of being banned. I'm not going to lock this thread. But I did receive our first reported post today in this thread.
I really appreciate this stance, and the position you're in. For this instance, and in future, are you at least contacting the person whose post was reported? This probably comes as no surprise to you since my first pm to you was questioning boundaries here, heh.

Oh, give or take, 86 bucks. Winning.

So this would be true if the tarriff were applied to the retail price. It isnt. Its actually applied to the manufacturer's (or importer's) cost... so not even the wholesale price necessarily... unless the retailer takes possession in China, like Wal Mart does. So if say the manufacturer cost for Marvel Legends is, say $10... then the 245% tariff would be $24.50, so the manufacurer cost is now $35 after the tariff... which would push the retail price to $50 to make the same profit they were making at $25 before.

Still awful, but not qute $85 per figure awful.

Until I hear a better guess for how much Hasbro is declaring that a $25 figure costs to manufacture I'm going with $10. So $10 * 2.45 = $24.50. If they keep the same $15 markup then $24.50 tariff + $10 cost + $15 is around $50.

The whole China tariff war is baffling. They WILL not back down, and they have ALL of the leverage. Any victories from this war in terms of moving manufacturing back to America--which in general is a terrible idea to begin with--will mostly happen well after Trump's term ends, and he has NO patience for that long-term a move. He had reportedly been saying that he expects China to negotiate, but he or his economic advisors are delusional if they actually believe that. Xi absolutely won't do it while Trump is acting like this, and since they're not a democracy nobody can pressure him to.

Trump has several anti-China hawks around him like Peter Navarro that may be misadvising him here. Seems like they're neglecting to tell him how long a trade war with them will last or how unpopular he will become for the next 3.5 years in waging such a war. China can LITERALLY cause a worldwide depression today, tomorrow, or whenever just by doing the one thing that's inevitable that they'll do anyway by invading Taiwan which would cause the price of electronics to go up by 10x to 100x their current cost, so the latest iPhone goes from about $1000 to anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000. We started solving this problem in 2022 with the CHIPS act...which of course Trump wants to scrap and has already been defunding for a few months now.

I'm fairly surprised Xi hasn't already stepped up their military presence around Taiwan just to remind Trump who he's dealing with. I doubt Trump has the patience to push this much further, but there's no doubt Xi is already wondering how long he's willing to suffer this foolishness. Trump has no leverage to affect Xi's power, but Xi can absolutely wreck Trump's second term if he becomes motivated to do so.

Uh! You're making me look stupid in front of my friends!

It was actually me, one of my posts. I contacted TSI first to clarify which post, and to apologize if I had crossed any line.

The person in question who reported it (or at least who my post was in response to, so I can only assume it was them) knows who they are. And while I won't publicly call them out by name, I will say that they need to grow a stronger spine and thicker skin. I say that because the post in question was one of the more innocuous responses here, and you having hurt feelings does not an offensive post make.

That said, I told TSI I wouldn't rock the boat any further, and rock the boat I will not. Only posting this because you asked. 😀

For Clarity

People get upset. People get offended. People say the wrong things, and sometimes people take things the wrong way. The reality is that we're never going to be in the business of policing the feelings and emotions of anyone else here. If someone tells us that they've been offended in some way, all we can really do is take them at their word, assume the best intentions, and do our best to course correct.

Important to note that course correcting is sometimes just saying 'hey, you upset someone with this post so keep an eye on that in the future.' Obviously, everything is going to be evaluated individually. There's a big difference between subjectively offensive content and someone coming in here and hurling racial slurs and death threats, right? Not every 'I didn't like this post' complaint is going to be about something that dire. But that doesn't make them valueless either.

All that is to say - we need all of you to feel comfortable telling us in private if something is going on that makes you uncomfortable, and that also means we're not going to target people that we assume, rightly or wrong, to be making those complaints. Trust us, if we think a complaint is without any merit at all, we have no problem dealing with it on our end.

^^That being said, for future, and I'm obviously only speaking for myself, I would much rather someone approach me directly and privately if I offend you in some way rather than reporting me. I find that to be...trying to be diplomatic here...weasally? That's the nicest way I can put it.

I am direct with people (some would say to a fault), and I expect people to be the same with me. I understand we are not all built the same way, but reporting something (that again, I found to be one of the more innocuous things I said during that admittedly heated conversation) is just, again speaking for myself and how I feel, a way of trying to sneakily shut someone up. Especially when you didn't even have a response for what I said, it only validates me and shows me that what I said had some merit. And maybe it didn't, but I'd never know, because you'd rather report it than discuss it.

But here I am, rocking the boat after I said I wouldn't. That's just some of that Midwest bluntness for ya. The way we speak admittedly rubs people the wrong way, we are just very matter of fact and to the point.

...or maybe I'm just an asshole. I dunno.

The zero leverage piece with China Engimatic points out above is what baffles me. We know China has all the leverage AND the government holds INTENSE grudges. Like, I think if we emerge out of this disaster in four years, some of the countries we've alienated could be persuaded to at least try working with our government again, but we know, we knoooooow, China holds a grudge. This is going to cause unreconcilable issues for manufacturing and trade. (I wouldn't blame other countries if they never trust us again, but I think at least some, if we are ever under better leadership again, could give us the "I know you were drunk at the time, don't do that again" speech and be willing to at least talk to us civilly. And I fully acknowledge that statement is WILDLY optimistic that we'll get to have that conversation in the first place.)
