TMNT Origins (Rumour!)

So something like this in terms of equivalent lines:

MOTU Classics = TMNT Ultimates
MOTU Origins = TMNT 1988 Remastered = "TMNT Origins"
MOTU Masterverse/Chronicles = TMNT Collector Line
Exactly.

And then a basic kids' line too, of course. Or maybe more than one, I don't know.

I'd love to see something at SDCC but I think it may be next Toy Fair before we get a look at anything sadly.
Yeah, I think it'll be a while.

I would rather see Mattel's "Chronicle-izing" of TMNT, I think? I don't know if that'd be enough to grab people's money, but if they could do what they did with Scareglow but do it with a character like Walkabout? I mean come on.

Of course, with production costs going up, costs in general going up, yeah, the toy market probably won't allow for that to happen. Especially if Mattel is wanting to stick to re-use. We're so out of the realm of "anything is possible!" with toylines. :/

I’m kinda curious now as to who Mattel has working for them now. Who’s responsible for the Chronicles sculpts? KG and SG? The movie figures? Who is their Dwight and Dan? Who are their DoubleDealer and AlwaysBumpin? Who is their Ryan Ting? Ryan Ting??

Honestly, I don't know if I want a Dan, Dwight, Ryan, or any other public faces, as much as I just want to know who's sculpting, and good overall communication about the products we are receiving. This goes for most retail lines and companies.

Same. Something classic but fresh. Give me Mattel's take on the TMNT over repeating what another company has already done recently.

Not to say an Origins style line wouldn't be tempting, but given current costs I'm far more interested in a Chronicles/collector line.

They hired Kyle Wlodyga after Super7 laid him off last year. He oversaw their TMNT line and I know he's working on Mattel's DC collector line. I don't know if he's confirmed if he's on turtles or not. They're basically not talking about TMNT right now and only willing to speak on the DC youth line.

I think people are going to be impressed by what Kyle brings to the table with Mattel, considering how hamstrung he was by Super7's leadership.

I like Kyle whenever I catch him on various streams, but I have no idea what he is as a toy designer because of Super7. I'm excited to see what he does with Mattel (he also designed that Chuck E. Cheese for whatever the Bull Air toy company is called).

Yeah, if you listen to Kyle talk - especially about -his- favorite toys that he didn't make, I think you get the impression of a guy that has a wide range of tastes but, therefore, really understands the overall market and what different types of collectors are looking for. Kyle stands a good chance of being one of those strong voices of reason at the 'new Mattel.'

Ultimately this seems less like Mattel having a niche to itself and more like it gets to pay for the entire party it arrived late to. I've collected all the Super7 and Playmates reissues I wanted. The NECA turtles haven't got much left in them (granted the Sakai ones surprised me, but I don't see yself picking up Usagi or any others in this style), and the 3rd party stuff is mostly where my money was headed under Rage/Fury Toys. $50-$65 a figure seemed like a lot until Mondo and then Mety/LingjiHun came along. Now we're debating which is better, HeatBoys or MetyToyz because they're so similar in many ways. I honestly don't know what niche this leaves for Mattel to try to wow us with. The McFarlane comics ones didn't garner my interest or my money, so I doubt Mattel will either considering as how none of their MOTU stuff called to me. The only angle I see this affecting me personally is if Mattel thinks it's going to lock down the license and leave everyone else with theirTMNT lines incomplete in many ways (except for perhaps NECA). How it handles companies like Mety/Lingjihun and Mondo will determine what if any good will I have toward Mattel. I think a lot of people were already moving on from TMNT so for all we know Mattel's foray may actually push more to bounce out. Or not. I have no clue what they're doing, I just know I don't need any more "homage" figures to original released modified in whatever way to make it appear modern while still looking rushed.

There's nothing I can directly point to that I want from Mattel specifically other than "diversity of the line" meaning all the different turtle companies get to continue their stuff and I'll see if Mattel's even looks cool. If they're gonna be the TMNT monolith and push everyone else out I don't see this taking off beyond the main 8 or so figures...and then the wrestling mashups start...

That’s a good point. The turtle franchise has been well and truly mined over the last 1-2 decades and there isn’t much ground left to cover outside of what they started with Turtles of Grayskull. And that might be an acquired taste for some. Maybe there is a chance they can pick up where Super7 left off with the 2k3 line. Or what Neca started with the 2012 line. After that we’re pretty spent. Also maybe the Mirage line has some juice left in it, assuming that Mattel has any interest in the Tales of the TMNT line or Jason Aaron’s run on the IDW turtleverse. Time will tell.

The only thing that could really get me on board at this point is indeed a proper IDW run.

But something tells me that Mattel won't head that direction, since Loyal Subjects and McFarlane both went down that road so recently.

I'm not really interested in evergreen "Mattel" versions either, because, I mean...what could they offer that other companies haven't already done? Between Mety, JoyToy, Heat Boys, Mondo, etc...that well is pretty much run dry.

I almost feel for Mattel in a way, because they are really behind the eight ball. We've had the best of it for quite some time now, and they really need to be able to bring something different to the table to get their return--at least from people like me.

I'd have to see what the Mutant Mayhem stuff looks like, but...again, it'd really have to wow me.

If all the rumors are true, I think my TMNT collecting days are nearing an end. And I am okay with that.

I disagree, mostly because the options we have are fairly expensive and incredibly limited in availability and scope. There's room for something like this!

I would agree with that. I don't think you can really, in an honest way at least, compare something Mattel would be doing to Mezco, Fury Toys, or whatever random import company you can think of. Very different style of product at a very different price point. It's like saying Marvel Legends will struggle in the space because of Hot Toys.

I'm referring to from a purely aesthetic, design viewpoint-- not price.

The Turtles are the Turtles, and they have a very basic appearance to make them the Turtles. At most, they add wraps here or there. They give Raphael a do-rag bandana versus a mask. That's about the extent of it.

What can they really add to differentiate from any of the other companies that they haven't already given us?

I think there's room for Mattel in the classic vision of the franchise as Playmates never really satisfied anyone with their retro attempts and while NECA's stuff looks good, there's no durable, highly, articulated line out there. I don't know if I'll go in on such a thing, but I could see Mattel making a line that pleases Legends and DC collectors and fits into a similar aesthetic.

For now though, they must be full speed ahead on Mutant Mayhem 2 since that has a release date they need to hit. It makes me wonder if some of the other companies currently in the TMNT sandbox get a stay of execution well into 2027 similar to how McFarlane is able to keep going because Mattel's collector line isn't due until next year. If Mattel's TMNT line is on a similar schedule we won't see the stuff most are really interested in until 2028.
