ML Mini Comic wave

Pretty stoked for this wave. Rom and Banshee are leading the hype train, with Warlock and Daken close behind. I've got several great Miles figures but won't object to some improvements, and Ultimate Iron Man looks like a fantastic figure even if I wasn't dying for it. Good stuff.

I guess I'm the only one who really wants that Ultimate Iron Man figure? That armor is so different, but cool in a practical way. It's got the real life bulk a suit of armor would have. I really enjoyed the Ultimate Universe, and the big three Ultimates have been a long time want. I do hope they get around to Thor. Despite my anticipation for Iron Man, I have to agree that Banshee is a front runner. Followed by UIM, Daken, Warlock, ROM, and Miles, though JHernandez recently posted some great posed shots of him. Those hips are awful in a vanilla pose, but allow for some great poses.

Ever since folks saw Rom back up on Amazon I'm STALKING my order for Banshee from this wave like every few hours. I would be psyched if he ships early. I did get a notification that Daken is shipping earlier but I was rushing around and didn't pay attention to the date. Possibly a dumb question - has anyone picked out which Venom to use to stand in for Mac to do a Dark Avengers display once Daken ships?

Norm, I ordered the Iron Man too - I never had the old figure of this armor and while I have HUGE issues with some of the writing from the Ultimates, I always liked how unique UIM's look was from 616.

ROBO really seemed to warm up to that Iron Man once he got it out of the box. While I'm not personally planning on getting him, he does look hella fun and well-engineered.

I like the design of the UIM armor and the figure looks great. I've just always had a bad taste in my mouth from the very existence of the Ultimate Universe (I had strong opinions about comics back then), so I'll be passing.

Just Banshee, Rom and Warlock for me.

I reread the Ultimates, Ultimate X-Men, and USM last year start to finish and I will fully admit I kind of made a just-ate-a-lemon-straight face the entire time I was reading the Ultimates. Some fun costume redesigns though.

It's been a while since I've read any Ultimates comics. What were your beefs with them? Anyone, doc, Joel, not to go on a tangent, just curious about your opinions.

I am excited to get him, especially seeing that the figure turned out pretty solid. He just wasn't really on my radar. I'm always happy to add to the Armory though - I don't even remember how long ago I got rid of that terrible Hasbro Year One figure.

I use the retro card Symbiote Spider-Man for Dark Avengers Mac, and the Monster Venom for his Thunderbolts/Venom'd out look.

Oh, I thought the Ultimate Universe was going to supplant 616 eventually. I wasn't a fan of Bill Jemas in general, so was predisposed to disliking anything he helped shepherd into "my Marvel comics". I loved Hitch's art, but the Ultimates title felt very "Edgelord" to me. I disliked Bendis' writing style. Just a lot of things I didn't like at the time. In honesty, I never really gave it a chance beyond reading some Vaughan UXM (big fan of BKV).

The Ultimates just felt MEAN. Like the Avengers were almost entirely actively unpleasant, awful human beings. (But hey, Millar.) Hitch's art was beautiful though. UXM I just didn't LOVE, but I don't hold it in such animosity as the Ultimates. And to be honest I might be one of the few people left alive who liked Bendis back then so I actually enjoyed USM. Did some weird stuff I didn't love but that was supposed to be the point of Ultimates, to shake things up a bit. UXM shook things up a lot in ways I didn't get much joy out of.

But yeah, my real knock on the Ultimate Universe was turning all the Avengers into awful humans. But that being said, Hitch knocked it out of the park art-wise.

I don’t mind Bendis’ writing. I think of all the titles he was doing at the time, he was best suited for Ultimate Spidey. I have the full run, and I loved it. Yes, there were plenty of odd choices for the sake of doing something different from 616. But he voiced a teenage Peter Parker so well.

As far as Millar/Hitch’s Ultimates, I can agree. There were ideas that I liked, but yeah, Millar gives all of the heroes he writes a sadistic tone. Again, I feel like it was mostly done at the very least just to be different from 616, at its worst, for shock value.

Sadistic is the right word. Probably belongs in another thread, but Millar even made the AUTHORITY too sadistic for me, and that was a book that already had a mean streak.

Keeping it on topic though, it occurs to me of course I like UIM's armor - it was Hitch firing on all cylinders on that book. That armor looked glorious on the page even if the book included the worst version of Steve Rogers ever.

I never cared for the Ultimate Iron Man look. The half-painted look just doesn't make sense beyond maybe an issue. Just finish giving your suit some color, Mr Stark.

Looking forward to Rom. Going on a trip from 4/19-26, so I'm hoping Rom arrives before then. He'd make a good traveling companion.
