Had fun messing around with the Returns figures last night.
Batman is pretty solid. I'll be honest, I'm not one who knows (or, admittedly, really cares) about the differences between the 89 and Returns suit, but this is just a nice, solid Batman. I like the implementation of the cape- it's not too large, not too small, and the bendy wires don't feel too distractingly chunky. I do wish he came with perhaps a bit more; it's odd that the deluxe theatrical edition comes with less than the basic 89 figure, but whatever. Haven't yet seen if the extra 89 hands are compatible with this one- does anyone know?
Max is nice. Think they did a great job on him sculpt-wise; it does look like a young Walken. I'll never use the crispy head on him, but maybe if I end up with a fodder body somewhere down the road. Still, it's sculpted really nicely; such a gnarly addition. Would've preferred another accessory of some sort- at least swappable hands, but also maybe a fish for Penguin, a gun, something. Still, it's a figure I never thought we'd get, so having him at all is a joy.
Penguin Commandos are fun. Like others have said, they're little glorified statues, but I appreciate that Todd at least made them all different- different beaks, feet, helmets, paint on their plumage, etc. Articulated heads, at least, would've been nice, but it's a small nit.
Catwoman is pretty solid. She of course suffers the same fate that any heeled figure does and has a bit of difficulty standing on her own, but not as bad as some of the others. Interesting that the peg hole for the base got placed farther back on her feet- wonder if that really makes a difference. The likeness is really nice; of course, I'd have happily taken an unmasked or battle-damaged head too, but I get that these figures were probably pretty expensive for Todd as-is. Like the others, extra hands could've really benefitted her so she could hold the whip and taser at the same time, or splayed her claws out wide. Not the biggest deal- I like the look of the open hand, and I'm sure someone will make customs eventually. I like the slightly sculpted stitching as well- nice touch, and the printing lines up pretty well. I also like that her stand and card were put into the bubble itself; I know it was done moreso to fill out her packaging and make it seem like she came with more, but it was nice having one insert I didn't have to tear up and can display.
Penguin's pretty great too. Yeah, a tad annoying that he can only look down, but I do think that he (both versions, really) was made with the duck in mind, so it makes sense he'd be looking down. Another thing I'm sure customizers will come up with eventually. The fingers on the hands are a bit annoying, but not the end of the world; I just wish his c-grip hand was a bit easier to open. Still, it's nice that he came with actual accessories; I've since given Farrell's Penguin another umbrella, but it's all the more interesting why he didn't come with one himself. Also, the felt coat is a nice touch- you don't really see felt on figures very often, it feels like. Probably gonna have to end up just getting the duck for the onesie Penguin and offloading the duck when I inevitably don't have enough room, but I do really want that onesie version to muck up.
All in all, it's a pretty solid wave. Some odd and/or unfortunate little cut corners here and there, but nothing to make me regret getting them; I'm just happy to finally have 6/7 inch Batman Returns figures after all these years. These were, I believe, my first deluxe theatrical editions, and while I admittedly don't necessarily see the need for the higher price, I get all the reasons why he does it this way. But I'd at least hope for a little more uniqueness between figures- at least put a different image on the card for every figure or more unique text or something. And whatever happened to the card stands that the collector's editions were getting? Were those done away with? Makes me realize I never actually picked up any of the collector's edition figures.
