Marvel Legends Gamerverse

As I’ve said before, there were plenty of issues of venom from around this time where his costume’s primary color was blue. These examples are just the tip of the iceberg.

I made the mistake of looking at the Omega Red/War Machine listing with an open wallet and oops I've got that coming to me tomorrow. I'll finally have an Omega Red. Hopefully there's folks out there who really need this War Machine.

I'll take him!

Why even debate. That is the colour he is in the game on default, though it doesn't look as good in their shoots because it has more variance in the sprite lighting and shading.

It's open secret MvC2 even if they don't call it that.

I didn't like it then, I don't like it now, but guaranteed if I pose my black Venom up some other smart ass nerd I know will go, "Ackshualleeee... he is blue when he fisticuffs Ryu and Jill, ngaayh, froynlaven! Flameil!" as he pushes his glasses up.

Well there’s also the fact that when this game was being developed the artists who were working at Capcom at the time were actively mining material from Marvel in order to get their characters looks just right. Hell in MvC2, Psylocke’s character model depicts her with her crimson dawn face tattoo, which all but cements here in that period of the late 90’s, when all of her prior character models don’t feature that tattoo. Similarly, the Hulk model is based on the work of Gary Frank during the time when Banner was in his Professor Hulk persona, and despite the fact that hulk reverts back to his savage hulk persona following the onslaught storyline, they never change his character model until the 3D era with MvC3.

So yeah it’s why the characters look the way they do in these games. It’s not necessarily just as simple as Bengus taking the designs of western superheroes and giving them a manga influence, but also actively incorporating contemporaneous designs from current comics from that period as well as doing the same for new characters that were incorporated into the roster.

The only real glaring exception is the fact that Spider-Man is Peter Parker and not Ben Reilly, who was actively wearing the webs at the time of these games releases starting in 1995, and Gambit was killed off in comics around 1997-2001.

I think the main thing is the game art is one way due to interpretations of coloring, but the text of the comics is pretty clear when they actually talk about color in world. While Spidey's costume has drifted enough that even in-world characters talk about the red and blues of his suit, Venom is invariably referred to as being in a black suit. This also happened to Spidey 2099 who is referred to as having a black suit on the page, but as time went by people misunderstanding the highlight choices lead to it being depicted as blue or purple in other adaptations (and eventually the comics as well). I'm not sure if Venom has ever been explicitly called out as being in blue by the characters of the comic world, but the "black suit" definitely is on multiple occasions. Whatever we as readers see on the page, to Peter Parker and co. Venom's suit is typically black.

But either way, he's 100% blue in the game, and there's always costume drift in different media. This figure is totally accurate to the source it's pulling from. Nothing wrong with that.

This is sort of like how Nightcrawler was called "fuzzy" for decades before any artist actually rendered the fuzz. It's really only in the last 10 years any artists choose to render him that way, and then not everybody.

I always assumed he was called fuzzy because of his moppy hairdo. He looks like a cotton ball

They talk about it a few times in the comics over the years (starting not long after his introduction), and eventually artists started drawing it so it's evident, but he's supposed to be covered in a fine velvety fur.

Sort of like how shoelaces hardly exist in superhero costumes until around the time Bryan Hitch shows up and everyone has to do that level of detail now with seams and buttons and everything.

Yeah... the idea that 'his primary color for Venom is blue in the comics is silly. It is very obviously a black suit with the blue used to allow for shading and detail to be depicted so that every drawing isnt just a giant black glob. Comic Venom is never actually in-world in a blue suit.

Its the same reason Black Panther looks blue alot even though his suit is not and has never been blue in universe.

That said, I dig this big blue symbiote and for me he's going to be a whole different symbiote... maybe Ruin... I don't know I'll figure out a name . I was going to say Raze and then found out there was already a symbiote that used that name, so...
