Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

The problem with going full Taika is it’s exactly beyond what I was talking about. The comedy isn’t natural. It doesn’t flow naturally from the characters and the situation. It’s comedy at all costs. Some of the jokes land sure but when they don’t they back bite the characters and the situation. Strangely he seemed to understand that with WWDITS.

He more or less got that with his first Marvel film. That doesn’t bother me. Korg is a borderline non entity in the comics so it’s not like changes to his character are a problem. Valkyrie isn’t Brunhilde. She is a different character all together so who cares. Marvel often has fallen short in exploring more Valkyrie characters thru the years so I embrace that too. Plus Tessa Thompson is cool.

... and if we are talking about the WWDITS TV show a team of talented writers like Tom Scharpling & Stefani Robinson and other show runners above and beyond his role as a producer.

I certainly didn't hate L&T. It had some legit engaging and funny bits. The German expressionist fight scene was awesome. Some of the comedy really worked. The final Eternity scene had me as a viewer.

Ohhhh absolutely. I thought the show was okay at first but when they found their footing, it FAR surpassed the movie for me.

I still need to rewatch it. I didn't hate it either, and definitely found a lot of it entertaining but haven't felt inspired to revisit as much as stuff like Shang Chi, Eternals, or even Black Widow. I do want to though.

Just to be clear, I liked Love and Thunder too. I thought Taika went overboard with the humor, I didn't think it was as good as Ragnarok, but I liked it. It held my interest and entertained me, and really that's all I want from a movie. Just an afternoon's entertainment.

In fact, there hasn't been a single Marvel Studios project, be it movie or TV show, that I disliked. Obviously there are some I've liked more than others (It's going to be hard for anyone to top Endgame) but they've all ranged from good to great. I even liked the much maligned She-Hulk. The incels can sue me.

As far as non-Marvel Studios Marvel movies go, there was one that stands out as pretty bad. That was the Josh Trank Fantastic Four. That was a stinker. I really considered asking for my money back. The kicker was the first half of that movie was kind of interesting. Then it went off the rails ("There is no Victor. There is only ... DOOM!"). I'm not sure what happened there, it was probably the much dreaded "studio interference" that you hear writers and directors talk about, but that was a disaster. Thank goodness the FF are in much safer hands now.

I loved She Hulk. They can get us both.

On the other hand... Secret Invasion is the only live action marvel project I never finished, and Quantumania and Multiverse of Madness are the two I don't like.

I enjoyed She-Hulk. The law office hijinks really worked for me. I've not started Echo or Ironheart and have only watched 2/4 Eyes of Wakanda episodes. I've heard positive things about them so I intend on getting around to them. The only thing I think that I've stopped and don't intend on picking back up is What If. I think I'm part way through Season 2. Can't say that I hate it, but given the chance to watch that or replay a video game I'm probably replaying a video game.

Yeah, I fell off What If. I know I suck and I'm depriving myself of some great stuff but I have developed a real issue with animated stuff. I didn't try Spiderman and probably won't watch Eyes. Again, I know I suck.

I found Spider-Man watchable. Basically a consistent What If... story? What If animation doesn't do it for me personally and it's inconsistent. To be fair, I found the What If... comic equally skippable.

I too loved She Hulk. I thought it was the perfect vehicle for the character, it’s just too bad they didn’t renew it for a second season.

There are MCU shows that suck but not every single element of them sucks. I don’t see these things in black and white. It’s why I said above, I usually like them more the 2nd go round bc I already know my usually minor quibbles and just see the bigger structure. That said Secret Invasion sucked but even that had good bits with Ben Mendelsohn and Olivia Coleman even if it didn’t add up at the end.

SheHulk is the 3rd best McU tv show after Loki and WandaVision. The babies crying that the Incels were the villains have never read a SheHulk comic in their lives. That is so often her primary villain.

Yeah, I find I'm the same way with a lot of things. Something I enjoyed some of, then try a second time I will sometimes enjoy more because I can see it for what it is and not what I was expecting it to be.

I can agree. My favorite scene from the episodes I did watch was Mendelsohn and Jackson having a conversation in a train car. It was interesting, well written, and definitely well performed. Almost everything else I saw on that show was lacking at least one of those things.

Heh... damn, I'd actually rank it higher than WandaVision. WandaVision was great, and I can even overlook the CGfest at the end because the rest of the show earned a lot of good will. But yeah, Loki and She-Hulk would be my top two shows I think. Daredevil is a close third and that's really mostly based on it just being Daredevil. F&WS, Hawkeye, Echo, and Ironheart weren't bad. Agatha was a lot of fun, and I thought Moon Knight had a lot of enjoyable stuff. I guess WandaVision was fifth for me because Iman Vellani has too much charm for me to rate Ms Marvel lower than it.

One of the supervisors at work is a big comic book fan. His parents owned a comic store so he literally grew up with comics. He told me he finally saw Fantastic Four and he hated it; felt they completely messed up Reed and he was nothing like the comic character. Then today another coworker told me she went to see it with her boyfriend and his friends or something, and they all hated it (while she thought it was great), but her boyfriend and his friends are all comic book fans. Apparently he said "I would have walked out if I could." But I wonder what was stopping him. Anyway, I've read comics with Reed in them but not FF very much at all, so I probably don't have a great read on Reed. Or maybe they did change him and that's why it works on film? I honestly don't know, but I also know my supervisor a work looked more forward to the youtube videos hating on Andor than the actual episodes of Andor itself, so I tend to think at least he was poised to hate anyway. I don't know and I don't get it. but when I'm spending THAT much money to go to the theater with my wife and three kids and getting the popcorn and the icees and all that shit, I'm gonna MAKE myself enjoy the damned movie goddamnit! heh.
