Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

Basically, none of us wanted her as who she is playing, heh.
Yeah, in any case, Hollywood is gradually getting the current "it" actors into their superhero franchise rolls. Pedro Pascal is checked off the list, same with Sadie Sink. I think all that's left now is Alan Richson, Glen Powell, and Sydney Sweeny. Sweeny as anyone besides Power Girl is a miscast. Richson as Batman is interesting, I like him but I'm not sure he has the range. Powell I don't know......I hear he really wants to do Captain Planet.....

My parents decided they wanted to take the kids this weekend so the wife and I went and saw Fantastic Four last night. I’ve never been a Fantastic Four guy, but I liked it. They did a good job of working in the backstory without it feeling like homework and gave each character enough room to work on screen so it was very easy to get a read on what motivates them. It sounds cliché, but the film really emphasized the family element and did so without being heavy handed or corny. These are characters that can disagree or annoy each other, but they also love each other. And putting the newly born Franklin at the center of that definitely works in the film’s favor. Plus, he’s a cutie.

I can see some being disappointed that we don’t see a whole lot of action involving the characters actually using their powers. I could understand those being unfamiliar with the characters going in forgetting that Mr. Fantastic has stretchy limbs or being confused at just what Sue’s powers are. My only disappointment is just the ending stinger. And just in case:

I wish we weren’t next seeing this group in an Avengers movie. I’d prefer to see more out of them away from the MCU machine that demands all of this interconnectivity. It might play fine, but the appeal for me with this movie are the characters and their dynamic, not their powers and seeing them fight bad guys with Thor and Hulk.

The new Spider-Man suit
Has some elements of both previous Spider-Man versions, in a good way for me anyway. Not as shiny as the last one, which I also like. The web shooters are kinda wonderful.

How long after their theatrical debut do MCU movies typically hit streaming? I'm looking forward to seeing FF and was curious how long I'd be waiting.

Well, Brave New World, which didn't do too well, came out in February then was streaming in May. Thunderbolts was in April, probably streaming by September. So FF may be on Disney for the holidays.

That's a nicer shade of blue for the Spidey suit, happy with that.

I hadn't noticed that they didn't really explain the powers of Sue and Reed all that well.

I kind of wish we had seen Sue maybe struggle to hold back something heavy prior to the fight with Big G and maybe talk a bit about how the invisible force shield is tough for her to control, to really emphasize she was massively overexerting herself to keep him at bay.

I get that, but it seemed pretty clear that was happening in the moment. The movie really trusted audiences to keep up.

My son and I finally watched Ironheart. It was mostly okay, some really good parts though. Probably could have been a movie but I don't know if anyone would have gone to see it anymore.

Agreed - I just think it adds to things a bit if limits are established to powers, like Superman can only fly so fast, etc.

Also, and this is a weird thing I never thought of before, but I wish when they have something the size of Galactus wandering the street of a city that each step actually creates damage to the road surface - those streets should be like a human walking on a piece of paper over sand, it should crinkle and sink.

Ultimately I liked it, but I now believe it is hard to write Marvel/Star Wars shows when the "swerve" is that the lead is actually flawed to the point of maybe being a bad person or hard to root for. WandaVision did it well but then pulled the punch a bit at the end. The Acolyte couldn't decide who the villain was from episode to episode, and then Iron Heart made Riri somewhat unlikeable and selfish and too arrogant, but until the show ends you can't tell if that is on purpose or poor writing/characterization. Granted, in this case it worked out with a nice ending, but I can see why it can cause people to give up on the show before getting to the ending...

Really dig the new Spidey suit. It's like a mix of the final swing suit (which I definitely wanted to see more of- hopefully we'll see a fair amount of it in this new movie before the new suit debuts) and Andrew's ASM suit. Really really happy they're finally paying off the Scorpion stuff too. I'm sure Michael Mando is thrilled as well. Hopefully he'll be in it a fair amount; it already feels like they're gonna be juggling a lot.
