MAFEX DC Figures

Okay, so HLJ is charging that shit before you complete check out.

What about Cool Toys Club, @EnigmaticClarity, whom I e-mailed? I just tried out that trick on their site, and there was nothing extra. It's like I was placing the order before August 29th. If I go through with one, will it get held hostage at Customs in California until I pay extra, do you think/know? 🥺

I think so, but I do not know. Shipping from Japan is a complete mystery in this new world until people start throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.

Nin-nin-game has just tonight resumed shipping with the duties calculated and shown at checkout, and when I test items the shipping is so far much cheaper than HLJ as long as you buy at least 2 to 3 items. Examples:
  • One item at ¥9,890 = ¥7,705 shipping
  • Two items at ¥22,780 = ¥11,689 shipping
  • Three items at ¥36,310 = ¥17,921 shipping
  • Four items at ¥47,992 = ¥21,315 shipping
  • Five items at ¥57,734 = ¥25,888 shipping
FYI the items I added one by one above were Mafex Guruhiru Deadpool, Figuarts Beetlejuice, Revoltech Agent Venom, Mafex Sony Amazing Spider-Man, and Mafex Hush Riddler. Adding those same items (or equivalent items since some are sold out) at BBTS totals up to $592 shipped as compared to $565, so even with the duties and extra fees going import at nin-nin is slightly cheaper in this example.

It looks like the first item is the most costing 70% of the price of the figure, and each extra item adds about 40% of its price in shipping to the total. It's not clear in the example above that it gets any cheaper the more items you add, but since the first costs the most you still do want to get as many into one order as you can to defray that initial cost as much as possible.

This should all get cheaper as time goes on and the shippers get better at this and competition drives all of their prices down, but it's still going to be more expensive than before. Probably best to wait at least another few months to let the shippers get these costs down.

CTC is China, I think.

Yes, just confirmed.

Isn't that worse? Muricans are scared of China, because they're not Murican.

I'm so glad xenophobia not only exists in 2025, but that others' xenophobia are costing non-xenophobes money.

SUCH A FREE FUCKING COUNTRY!! YAY, MURICA!!

There are plenty of legimate reasons to be concerned about China as well as a ton of illegitimate ones. Not scared, but EXTREMELY concerned. Having said that they have a ton of redeeming qualities and have long served as a positive force in the world in many ways.

With respect to tariffs yes, it's worse. Japan is 15% for toys and China is 30%. Most of the fees we're seeing from the Japanese retailers are related to them having to jump through new hoops, and Chinese shippers will have to do something similar. They may have entirely different hoops to jump through though so I know I'd be VERY concerned about ordering from there.

I'd also be a LOT more concerned about Chinese retailers just ignoring the new shipping complexities to the point they're able to and leaving it to the shippers to collect money from you during shipping. I haven't heard of CTC; do they mention how they're dealing with the new tariffs and de minimis ending? If they don't even acknowledge the new challenges with shipping from China to the US then that's a HUGE red flag.

Their shipping prices include "taxes"? That sounds like they're either avoiding your question or never understood it to begin with.

That doesn't inspire confidence. That sounds like they're leaving the tariff situation to the shipper and that the shipper will end up collecting it from you at some point.

Some of these companies ship in bulk, like a domestic retailer having a container of stuff brought over from China, and that gets them out of having to do all of the more laborious paperwork and minimums so you're just paying the actual tariff. It's possible you won't pay anything additional, but also not certain, so does it even matter? I guess if you can get someone to confirm there will be no additional charges you're covered to some degree.

Like I said in on the last page, some of their English isn't great, so I would like to believe didn't understand my question. But I also have no reason to assume malice, because I'd broken a hand peg, and they got me a replacement for free faster than the actual figure.

And this isn't a case of "I'd rather not pay more than stated," it's "I can't." It doesn't exist. I have to save up & sell shit just to afford posted prices at Target. I don't have anything extra to cover "unexpected" amounts, regardless of the size.

I want to say so many things that a mod will just delete to protect me from getting "disappeared" by our fascist shithole government...sigh...

There aren't any Japanese retailers who ship enough to the US who do this are there? The only company I'm sure does this is AliExpress from China to the US.

No idea. Only the individual company could confirm. With the current tariff business starting earlier this year, some may have pivoted. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a shipping container, but a bundle of over $800 worth of stuff. At least in our hobby, that isn’t a lot of packages. All that is to say if a company says there will be no further charges upon receipt it is plausible, even if it seems unlikely in the moment.

Okay so this month's reveals are TSS Bloodsport (2 Idris heads, the mask, and a ton of weaponry, parts, and a flame effect), TSS Peacemaker (2 heads and er, the head sculpt is okay if you keep the helmet on...never ever take it off), and AM2 Black Manta (lol but actually a good head sculpt). There's also an alt paint job version of Gambit that ditches the metallic paint for more regular, flat colours, and yellowish card FX.

Thanks for the heads up, just ordered Gambit.

I didn't notice the flat colours, which I don't mind, but I hated the shade of brown his coat is (I was gonna put my extra Hush coat/arms on him anyway - if I could ever FIND them, lol), and yellow power effects is 1000000% a dealbreaker.

Sigh, guess it's the CT Toys knockoff, I guess.
