Jada Street Fighter

I've never been a Street Fighter fan but now find myself collecting not only Jada but also Storm Arena. What is wrong with me?

I cherry pick the Street Fighter line. Ryu, Chun Li, Guile, Cammy, Bison, Dhalsim, Honda, Blanka, Vega, Sagat, so far. Feel like I can definitely skip Ken since it’s just the same body as Ryu. Don’t know if I’ll ever pick up Akuma, Deejay, Balrog, Fei Long, or any alternate colors. But Zangief is one of my most wanted figures in decades, thanks solely to Wreck It Ralph. But I keep these figures with the ML Gamerverse figures that appeared in MvC. I know only roughly, since I didn’t actually play the game, but I remember the ToyBiz 2pks, and some had very iconic appearances that transcend casual knowledge of the game. Oh, and Jada Mega Man lives with them too.

Vega arrived from BBTS today. This is only my second Jada figure, after Ken, as these two are my favorite SF characters and two of my favorite fighting game characters more generally.

But I went back and forth a lot between whether to buy Vega, or just sell Ken and not have any SF figures. The last two years or so I've really been in a state of flux on what I want in my toy collection and what I need to just say 'no' to. Ultimately, Jada won me over because Ken was too much fun to get rid of, and I can't just have Ken while a perfectly good Vega is out there waiting for me.

I almost feel guilty about how whelmed I am by Vega, because he's SUCH a good figure. It's just that.. this is what I've come to expect from Jada. They make excellent, fun action figures and despite Vega being a pretty top tier non-import toy, he's also basically just... yep.. a Jada figure. Speaks volumes about how great of a job they're doing and I hope they can keep this up across many more IPs.

I PRAY FOR and FEAR the day Jada gets Mortal Kombat.

Anyway... great accessories. Joints are smooth as butter. WIRED fabric sash. Genuinely think the only thing that could have made this figure better is a smirking head/face option. But man, he looks awesome.

I'm still resisting any impulse to get more of them, though. I can't have, and don't need, an entire collection of SF figures. That being said, I'm a fan of a few other characters (far less than I am of Ken and Vega), so if I ever see them at a decent discount.... maybe. But I am very happy with just Ken and Vega. They look phenomenal facing off against each other.

Stylistically, MK feels outside their aesthetic, but yeah, after picking up a couple of Todd's phoned in garbage MK figures... Jada would do what Jada does, and give us a line of absolutely functional, fun, not groundbreaking but fully satisfying hand candy if they got that license. Fortunately for our wallets if not for our collections, I think Todd's got that one locked down.

Aesthetically, I'm not sure. So far they've done SF, Scooby, Cereal/Food Mascots, Mega Man, and Cyberpunk. Obviously, it all looks like Jada, but I think it also looks like it's -supposed- to as well. So I'd love to see what a Jada MK line would look like.
But yeah, I think Todd has the license for at least a couple more years at a minimum. Good for my wallet, sad for my brain.

The dissonance of having multiple quality lines of Street Fighter figures to choose from while MK wallows in eternal dissatisfaaction.

I. Do. Not. Understand.

MK often seems like it's the more popular of the two fighting game brands. MK is more regularly in the public eye (more frequent games, far more frequent movies). But MK seems to struggle more than SF to have a really good toyline, whereas almost every SF line that has ever been made was, at least, pretty good.

I was really hoping the MK movies would bring more licensees out of the woodwork, but we got saddled with fucking McFarlane.

Right? I'm personally a much bigger fan of Mortal Kombat than Street Fighter but now I find myself with McF for MK and buying two full lines for SF (Jada and Storm Arena). I was originally only going to get Dan and Nash from the Arena line but they were so good that now I've got all of Ken, Ryu and Sagat all in my Pile of Loot with more pre-ordered... and that's despite already having all of those others from Jada. Sigh. Yet, I'm still the same guy that gets crabby if I have two versions of any character from Marvel Legends at the same time -- and that's by far and away my favorite and primary line. LOL!

I don't have proof, but I think Street Fighter is the more popular brand world wide. In the video game world I definitely feel like i hear more about Street Fighter than I do MK especially when it comes to tournaments and stuff

The particulars of how the behind-the-screen systems work in SF lends itself more to competitive play than MK. AND MK is harder to sell as an e-sport because of the more insane levels of violence/gore. That's actually why you see more SF out there than MK. But MK is the stronger brand, with nearly double the game sales.

MK has been the biggest selling fighting game series for the last few generations but that's mainly because of the effort NRS put into their single player story campaigns and fun DLC chararcters. As far as the FGC and the esports side goes, though, it's kinda dead, especially after MK1 died on its arse. The games are poorly animated compared to the various Japanese titles, things like the X-ray moves are too long and annoying to sit through, and its gameplay generally comes over as third-rate so the competitive scene is non-existent.

SF6 has proved popular everywhere but especially so in Japan compared to the disappointment that was SF5. It's weirdly become something of a big deal again, overshadowing everything else...but even then, it's only sold about as much as MK1 managed.

Wonder if it's a bit to do with how easy the licensors are to work with (sort of like how TMNT will license their stuff to ANYONE) and maybe the gore/violence making toy companies gunshy. But really I'd love a line of MK that I could put NEXT to my Jada figures. Let Ryu fight Sub-Zero. C'mon, that'd fucken rock.

It absolutely is more likely due to toy companies being skittish about it than anything else, which isn't really an issue with the two recent companies that have held the license. The brand name and crossovers can sell basically anything. Just sad that all the toy companies have been really, really dumb about it.
