G.I. Joe Head Canon & Fanfic Filecards

I feel like within the world these cards have created, and don't let me speak for you here, Zartan is like a Chaotic Neutral version of the typical Neutral Good Robin Hood. 'Rob from the rich and feed to the mostly just me, but I'll share if I feel like it, and have time, and there's extra, and it benefits me.' Zartan was never -evil- as much as he was of a type and morality that could not exist in the 'lawful' world G.I. Joe represents, so he naturally had to fight them. Even if Cobra grossed him out a lot of the time.

Anytime Zartan had a conversation with someone when I was playing, I would stand in front of the fan to utter his dialogue.

You're pretty damned close to how I see him. Zartan in my section of the multiverse is a trickster figure - and tricksters could be malevolent, murderous fuckers, but that's just their purpose in the universe, not evil. They're chaos. Zartan falls into that blue-orange morality scale where black and white doesn't exist.

I also like that the Dreadnoks are DESTRUCTIVE but rarely EVIL. Most of them are human tornados. You do not want to see them coming but their malevolence is just their raison d'etre, not their actual intent. But Zartan is even more primal than that. I'm not even sure Zartan is fully human, if I'm being totally honest.

We did it everyone. Mission accomplished. We bullied Doc into doing Zartan.

Got a lot of rushing around to do today but planning on writing up Zartan when the dust settles tonight. Been thumbing through my old copy of Trickster Makes This World by Lewis Hyde for some inspiration on top of his old file cards.

Doc doesn't want to rush because he has to do a ton of research about how Zartan can be related back to First Nations' views of coyote trickster spirits.

I saw one thing speculating Zartan may have been French, but I wonder how much of what is known about him in the world of GI Joe is things he just wants people to believe.
