G.I. Joe Classified Series

I finally ordered a couple of SAW Vipers that will be here Saturday. I don't usually wait this long to get GI Joe releases but I was kind of put off by the complaints of him being too short. Did a search for comparison pics and landed on the Fwoosh review and he doesn't seem that bad so, trigger pulled. I love the look of him and I don't think the height will be noticeable on the shelf.
I'm not a huge stickler for stuff, but at least for me, SAW looks like he's 5'11 if the average viper is 6'. I barely notice the height thing.

Me either but some people online were kind of acting like he was going to look like an Ewok next to a Stormtrooper. I should have looked up comparison pics before now.

I can get you a size comparison pic today if you'd like. It's funny you posted this because just the other night I was rearranging my Vipers (to get that pic of the different colors of blue vipers), picked up SAW, and said out loud "you ain't as short as everyone said you were, are you, bro." Sometimes I think toy collecting has made me insane.

SAW-Viper suffers from the same problem that Leatherneck does: people *think* he is supposed to be a “tall guy” a la Slaughter or Heavy Duty: he’s not, at least not per the original figure(s). Average height is fine.

On the other hand: choosing to make Darklon a thicc bruiser is 🔥

I think he will be perfectly okay as far as what I saw in the Fwoosh pic.

It's okay if he's shorter, right? They aren't clones or anything.
Totally okay! I swear I heard some people somewhere talking about him as if he were a different scale which turned into speculation that they were downsizing the figures a bit to save plastic and money from that point forward. You know how collectors are prone to hysteria when the first few pics come out.

Yeah, there was the hysteria of thinking they were pulling a fast one on us. Hell, I wish there was more variety in heights. I suspect part of it was that THE SAW viper in the comics, that mfer, was a big bruiser. (My head canon is Snake Eyes is deceptively unimpressive, like five foot nine, would walk right by him in the street if he weren't dressed in a knight's helmet.)

In fact, one of my only real complaints about some of my favorite lines is that everybody is the same height. Kinda one of the things I love about Black Series is that so many of the figures need bespoke parts they almost have to be different heights. I love Masterverse but most of those guys are the same parts from calf to neck.

I initially brought up the height thing with SAW Viper. It wasn't meant to be a huge deal, I just posted a screenshot of a review where he looked a little shorter than I think most people were expecting. If it was blown out of proportion here, it was a group project. Personally I thought the figure would look cooler if he were sized closer to Big Ben and the bigger guys, and not smaller like the initial CI Trooper and Beachhead offerings. This line has been scaling up more than down with newer parts (compare CI Beachhead and Retro Beachhead), so it's natural to want newer figures to scale better with recent releases than old releases.

I'm going to find myself with the opposite opinion as docsilence, I'd prefer if most figures had a relatively universal height, with small and big characters being unique. I like this approach because it makes it easier for me to kitbash and mix parts, which is one of my favorite aspects of playing with these figures.

Can't speak for everyone else, but I wasn't thinking of your post but rather a bunch of clickbait-y rage Youtube videos and stuff months and months ago panicking that Hasbro was shrinking its figures going forward to save some money on plastic.

I would've preferred SAW being like, as you say, Big Ben height (my first thought was "Gung-Ho sized") but after all those panicky social media posts, he was shockingly normal. Same with Leatherneck (I've never put him side by side with the other guys, but just in hand both of those dudes feel like they're average sized compared to their peers.)

I don't do a lot of kitbashing but I see where you're coming from. Joes it's less noticeable cos they're so covered in equipment, but sometimes I look at, like, Daredevil and Spidey on the same body and think Peter should be to Matty's eyebrows in height or something like that. (All in all, inconsistent articulation bugs me more than heights anyway, and Classified is wildly consistent with ROM.)

Inconsistent articulation is absolutely the worst part of this line. I still think Jinx is one of the worst figures in the line due to her being a ninja with the torso articulation of a popsicle stick. She moves about as well as digitally de-aged De Niro in The Irishman. Vulture can't lift his arms past about 60 degrees, and if you go too far lifting them, they get stuck (I have the broken figure as proof). Retro Viper (and Vulture while we're picking on him) can't move his head very much, yet Blowtorch has no problems using the "same" articulation layout.

With Joes it just makes sense to keep the heights fairly universal if they're going to reuse parts, otherwise we get stuck with figures being taller or shorter for no reason other than "because reuse".

Speaking of ROM, I don't know about everyone else, but I find I have more problems with figures with the waist ball joint style (whatever that's called ) ratcheting, across all lines, than I have any other type of articulation. Joes ten to to be too tight at the waist (I'm always afraid I'll snap one in half some day), but I've got mythic legions who fall apart at the waist if you pick them up too fast. Legends are wildly inconsistent, McFarlane ball joint hips might as well not even be there... I think the only type of figure I've consistently had no problems with for that joint specifically are any Jedi in black series. And unlike stuck knees or elbows that tend to come loose with a bit of hot water, I can't seem to fix the waists on these.

If I'm understanding correctly, then my best advice is to get a bottle applicator with a long stem and silicone shock oil, turn the figure upside down and drip a few drops into both the front and back of the lower torso plastic in the ball joint crevice, move them a bit if you can to spread it but otherwise leave them upside-down for a day to let it soak in and spread around the joint. I don't think Classifieds can come apart at that section which makes this more difficult. LMK if you want any follow up links to applicator bottles or shock oil or info clarification.

You're understanding that exactly correct. Hilariously, I have my bottle of shock oil stored directly next to my non-displayed Classified. :) I'll give this a shot. The tough part is when they've got a vest on that makes it hard to get to that section (and sometimes hard to tell if it's the vest itself in the way).
