Figura Obscura

The bit about ending the retailer appreciation waves made me think the Figura Fomo isn’t as strong anymore; people are able to tell themselves “eh I’ll just wait for the repaint” and won’t jump at buying direct from 4H. I felt like the subtext was “if you think you might want a Figura in the future, buy from us now because you might miss your shot”

The Halloween and Christmas releases may be predictable, but that’s because they’ve become yearly traditions, which is a good thing. I love celebrating the holidays and I always look forward to the Figura reveals, even if I pass.

I slept on a Christmas Carol though because the figures they’ve released don’t really stand on their own right now in the display in the same way Father Christmas or The Krampus does. But I hope they finish the roster for those collecting, and I hope they eventually give us some reindeer and elves, especially that they now have the imp body.

I didn't jump on the Christmas Carol figures either, but I too agree that they should finish them out for everyone who's already devoted themselves to the line. I could've sworn they'd already released Ghost of Christmas Present, but I guess I got the green robed Father Christmas confused. I was/am mostly curious as to how they'd adapt Christmas Future- that could be a really cool display on either the Christmas or Horror display, depending on how they do it.

Part of the appeal for me on the Figura Obscura figures are just that- that they're relatively obscure characters that nobody else would really go for. So in that regard, they already feel a bit limited; the retailer exclusives felt like second chances in a way- once the figure trickles out a bit and lets everyone see how cool it turned out, giving folks a chance to get their own or to stumble upon it naturally and still be able to get one. Like others have said- they can be tough enough to get as-is, so I don't think stopping them altogether would be the wisest move. Maybe cut back on the amount sent to retailers, since I don't know if I've ever seen those versions sell out, but still- make 'em for folks who want 'em. Or maybe switch up the model- don't get me wrong, it's lovely having them ready to ship when they go up for order, but maybe make them more of a "made to order" type thing. I dunno. Fingers crossed it's not as dire as we're making it sound.

Thoth's a cool choice. I passed on Anubis and Bast and I'll also pass on Thoth, but he's a solid pick from the Egyptian pantheon.

I've expressed my feelings about Xmas before and I doubted when y'all asked for more ghosts beyond Marley, but it does seem really odd for a company to say they're already bored of the pattern and predictability of a line when they could've stopped after Marley and avoided the expectation in the first place.

I wonder how deep they'll go with the Egyptian pantheon. They should definitely hit Osiris, Ra, and Horus. Do they make Isis or Set?

All due respect to the Egyptian gods, but they aren't the most interesting designs. Most of them are just a dude with an animal head. They could at least give Horus a set of wings, and Osiris is traditionally a pharaoh/mummy hybrid.

Thoth is a pass for me. Anubis might be my only Egyptian representation unless they knock a theoretical Osiris or Horus out of the park.

An Egyptian god line could be very cool, I had totally missed Anubis and Bastet, but now have the retailer version on order at BBTS.

I really need to get Ganesha and hope that becomes a retailer version as well - will match well with the Legends of the Ramayan figures.

Something about the colours on Thoth feels weird to me. That plus the fact that I'm in Australia would normally be prime "wait for the retailer exclusive repaint" territory, but if they're not doing that anymore... Guess I should have pulled the trigger on the Jersey Devil.

Also, having that skinny bird head on a super jacked human torso looks derpy. Disappointed that he has such a similar silhouette to Anubis.

Blowing up a popular yearly tradition “because it was becoming predictable!” is the most Four Horseman thing I can possibly imagine.

Then to follow up “we don’t want to be predictable” with a stealth drop of another Egyptian God… Chef’s Kiss!

(also, how much you wanna bet the rest of the Christmas Carol ghost are coming and Cornboy screamed “YOU DON’T KNOW US!!!” to cover their tracks. “HAHA! We are doing a Christmas drop! GOTCHA, BINCHES!!!! Also please no pre-orders and in stocks items in the sale order!”)

I'll probably get Thoth, but I'd really, really like Sobek. Thoth looks really good, but he's hardly the most exciting one of the gods. Anubis was kind of the one I wanted the most and now I've got it...so...I guess anything else is just sugar on top.

I'm pretty sure I still have my 2 Egyptian Scarabus variants from the Gothitropolis line (only kept a few when I downsized the collection a few years ago), so I don't really need this new figure.

Maybe I spend too much time talking to other collectors, but I feel like "predictable" is a compliment considering how often people are frustrated waiting for, say Hasbro to finish a Marvel team or Todd to tell us any information about how to buy figures. I'm legitimately into the idea of "hey every year in November/December-ish we're gonna hit you with a holiday themed figure and it'll ship on X."

RE: Thoth: Looks fun, though I'm still trying to figure out how and where to display Anubis and Bast. Great figures, stacked with fun details, just hard to display properly without a dedicated shelf.

Looks like they dropped a surprise god of Egypt at Legions con this morning! No shots of the figure itself that I’ve been able to find yet but it’s Thoth. CB was right that we wouldn’t see that coming haha. Maybe Christmas is still on this year?
Ah, that's a shame.

They already have some gods of Egypt, it's getting rather predictable.

Yeah, it is weird how often it seems like action figure manufacturers seem to have this conversation -

Decision Maker 1 - "Wow, customers seem really happy that we are predictably and logically releasing figures to build teams and collections!"
Decision Maker 2 - "Well, I'll be damned if customers of ours are going to be happy with us and think we are considering their preferences!"
Decision Maker 1 - "Yeah, you're right - should we not make the final member of the team at all, or make the character but not in the expected style?"
Decision Maker 2 - "Why not both? So 5 years from now we agree to "complete" the team with the last character but in a different style, and tell them how we listened to them."
Decision Maker 1 - "Brilliant! They will never see that coming!"

Definitely more of a Marvel Legends than Mythic Legions convo, but I was just talking with a friend who doesn't even want Hasbro to finish the Thunderbolts anymore because of how bad Citizen V and Songbird will look next to newer sculpts. (I still want them to finish it but he's not off-base in his disappointment).

But seriously, knowing Figure Obscura would do a Halloween and Xmas figure every year was starting to become something to look forward to.
