DC Studios Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

I want an Hourman movie and a Dr. Mid-Nite movie, and I don't even feel bad about it. Come at me, bros.
That would be so insanely cool. Words cannot express it.

Back in the Silver Age day, DC editor Julie Schwartz brought back some Golden Age characters for team ups. There was Dr.Fate/Hourman and Starman/Black Canary.

Gardner Fox wrote the stories and Murphy Anderson did the art. Not only were they well written and fun, they were just beautiful to look at.

Years ago, I heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from someone that that theme was supposed to continue. Dr. Mid-Nite would team up with Sandman, again with Fox and Anderson on story and art. But for some reason it never materialized. And God, that is a pity.

How do I hear all this? It's simple. Go to any of the bars in the Gaslamp Quarter during SDCC when the exhibit hall closes. Find a bunch of Marvel and/or DC staffers and buy them drinks. Then keep your mouth shut and your ears open. You'll hear all kinds of interesting shit.

My dad, who is not really a comic guy, actually had that issue of Showcase with Doctor Fate and Hourman vs. Grundy. That and some really early Batman stuff. I used to run down to the basement sometimes to dig through his boxes of old stuff to read them (they were in sleeves in a binder, and he wouldn't let me put the in my room because he rightly expected I would destroy them like I did my own comics by just not being careful).

I've really liked Hourman and Doctor Fate ever since. The only reason I don't bring up wanting a Doctor Fate movie, although I do, is I think he's still a bit tainted by The Rock's terrible movie.

I'm guessing exposure to those particular characters is also why my enjoyment of DC tended toward Justice Society and not Justice League.

That's also on my list of "why we starting so late?" I don't want to join a DCU already in progress, but we're already three Lanterns deep by the time we start the story.

I guess it just depends how they play it, really. We always technically start the Lantern story already in progress- it's a force that's been going on for untold ages, so even Hal isn't the "first". We can always flash back to how they got their rings. I guess it just depends on who the DCU chooses to focus on as its "main" Lantern. Seems like that might be John, at least to start, which I guess makes sense if they're going for an older Hal and Guy. Can always bring in Kyle later. Personally, I'm more excited for whatever alien lanterns they choose to show. That was one of the (quite few) cool parts of the Reynolds movie- the fleeting looks at all the other Lanterns.

Mike Flanagan writing a movie about Basil Karlo felt like it was WAAAAAY too good to be true, and yet: here we are.

I am beyond excited. Hopefully this is awesome and leads to many more Batvillain-focused films. There is nothing, NOTHING I would love more than a robust showing for Batman’s rogues gallery in films.

Master of disguise horror actor Clayface is the best Clayface. I don't know when they settled on gloopy morpher Clayface, but he was the one character in the old animated series that never fit in for me.

The Batman: Caped Crusader animated episode featuring Clayface does the best of both worlds of creepy actor and morphing (keeping the morphing only the face, with maximum body horror), and it’s honestly the Heart of Ice of that series: basically a perfect episode. Taking cues from that is the way to go.
That said: animated series Clayface design is iconic at this point, and we’re probably gonna see something like it at some point; actually, Creature Commandos literally did show it.

I love me some Clayface, but I agree- it's probably Mike Flanagan's involvement that has me most excited. I've loved everything he's done for Netflix so far- Hill House, Midnight Mass, and House of Usher were all phenomenal miniseries that have stayed with me in some way. I'm expecting this to probably be moreso the master of disguise, which is fine by me, as long as they bring in the gloopy poopy Clayface eventually. This DCU is more fantastical than the Nolan or Reeves movies, so I hope they take full advantage of that eventually. I don't think I know the guy they cast from anything, but he's got a unique look, for sure. Excited to see how it turns out.

There were, I think, about 8 different versions of Clayface in the comics. My own personal favorite is Preston Payne, from Steve Englehart's and Marshall Rogers' brilliant run in the late 70's.

But that's not the version we're getting and that's perfectly fine. I'm just glad we're getting a Clayface movie written by Mike Flanagan and produced by James Gunn and DC Studios. That's super cool.

Yes.

I would love the really obscure ones. Signalman, Calculator, Killer Moth, Mad Hatter, Clue Master, Calendar Man, Ventriloquist, Hugo Strange, Catman, KGBeast, Black Spider and about a zillion others.

These oddball kinds of forgotten characters are what James Gunn specializes in. He made us care about a racoon and a walking tree. He can make us care about a character who thinks he's in a Lewis Carroll novel. Or a guy who can only talk using a dummy.

I FINALLY got around to watching Penguin and Creature Commandos on Max this past week. I was really impressed. Those shows were really well done. I feel good about the future of DC.

I don't know if you folks know this, but 2025 marks the 90th anniversary of DC Comics. They published their first comic book, New Fun number 1, in February 1935. I was kinda hoping they'd do something special to mark the occasion, but we're halfway through the year and so far not a word. Maybe they'll do something at SDCC. I hope so.

But regardless, I'm looking forward to Superman, Supergirl, Lanterns, Clayface, Peacemaker and hopefully much more.

I just checked the special guest list for this year's SDCC. Jim Lee, Paul Levitz, Frank Miller and Dan Jurgens will be there, as well as comic historians Mark Evanier and Maggie Thompson. That leads me to believe a DC anniversary panel is in the works, but like I said, we'll see.

Man. 90 years. And I've been reading DC Comics since 1964. That's 61 of those 90 years.

That's a looooooooong time. But ya know what? I wouldn't trade my life for anyone else's. It's been great. I love being a fan of this stuff.

And I still think the best comics and movies are yet to come.

This a GREAT freaking interview and if you care about DC movies and shows, you should read it. It's long, but please make the time. There's a lot of interesting intel in there.

A couple of quick excerpts:

I also wanted to ask about Sgt. Rock. With all the information flying out there, could you set the record straight on that in terms of where it is?

I feel like we're in a pretty good place. We're still moving forward, but it's not going to be...What would Peter want me to say here? ... So it's still moving forward, but, yeah, right now it wasn't exactly where I wanted it to be creatively, and so it needs to change a little bit.

How much of these undisclosed titles are things that have already been announced versus things that haven't?

My favorite thing has not been announced at all. One of the scripts people kind of know about. My script people don't know about. The other script people don't know about. So it's mostly stuff people don't know about.... A couple of those things [announced in January 2023] are in pretty good shape in terms of coming up, but there was one thing that I knew about from the very beginning, that when I pitched to David Zaslav what the DCU would be, I pitched to him, but we did not announce in that first meeting because I felt like it was too easy to rip off by another company. And so that's one of the main things.

Paradise Lost...

Paradise Lost is moving along. It's slow-moving, but it's moving. And, yeah, I really love that project a lot.

Is that really directly connected to your larger plans for Wonder Woman in this space?

Yes. Well, yes and no. Wonder Woman's a separate thing. We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now. So it's different. I mean, not different. They're connected. She's from f---ing Themyscira, so...

Anyway, read it. Some good stuff there.
