"You ... have a dog?"

Damn straight.

This looks pretty cool.

But I still want the real Justice League. Hopefully at some point we get them.

I think what we're getting in Superman is closer to the Giffen/DeMatties version of the JL with a buildup to a proper Justice League in a future film.

Trailer looks pretty good to me, not that I really needed to be sold on this.

This is all I want, but I know we need to get what you want first.

I love the Giffen, DeMatteis and Maguire JLI. I really do. The 80's were a dark and gritty time with the deconstruction of the superhero being very prevelant. Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and Elektra Assassin and Alan Moore's Watchmen and Miracleman were some of the greatest and most important graphic novels ever published. They took the comics industry to the next level, no question about it. But man, were they depressing. So dark and dsytopian. And then JLI came along and what a breath of fresh air. It was hysterical. DeMatteis' witty dialogue combined with Giffen's slapstick and Maguire's photo realistic facial expressions made this book a pure joy to read. I loved it.

All that said, I'm going to let you in on a little secret.

That's the very first comic book I ever owned. My beloved French grandfather bought it for me when I was six years old. Late in 1964, I believe. And I have been head over heels in love with the Justice League of America ever since. Everytime I see that iconic logo and the superstars that make up that roster, the little boy inside me wants to do a happy dance.

My hope is that someday, before I shuffle off this mortal coil, I get to see a great movie called Justice League. A movie every bit as great as that first Avengers film.

And yes, I would happily take a fun JLI movie, too.

Because at the end of the day, that's what comic book movies should be. Fun.

Superman has never really been my cup of tea- I'm a Batman guy through and through, but I think this looks fun. To me, Superman can easily come off as a bit dry and boring, but I get that it's a fine line to tread. I think he sorta suffers from the same thing that Jack Sparrow does- he's a great scene partner to work off, but if you're gonna focus on him, you gotta do something interesting with him, whether that's make him a bit snarky, depower him, show him through a fantastical lens, etc. Tricky part is, depending on how you go about it, it removes the point of who/what Superman is. He's idealistic enough, like Captain America, where he's that dry, squeaky clean do-gooder in a lot of ways, which, when combined with his literal unstoppable powerset, can easily remove some of the stakes and appeal.

Still, if anyone can add a bit of zest and zing to Superman, I think it's James Gunn. I wouldn't say there's necessarily been a "fun" Superman movie released in my lifetime (to each their own, of course), but it's promising to me that it looks like they're prioritizing some of the fun, and even embracing a bit of the absurd, here.

I know there's discourse and vitriol around everything released nowadays, but it's been interesting seeing some of the feedback for this film. Most of it looks pretty positive, which is great to see, but there's those silly nitpickers too. A big one I saw yesterday was that Superman saving that civilian about to be crushed would've basically made her explode from the force of it. Forgetting, of course, that it's a comic book movie not based in reality. I stopped giving it any mind once I saw that most of them were then excusing Snyder's Superman and how he saved people, because apparently, as one person put it, he "rolled his body to redistribute the intertia". 🙄 Who knew there were so many scientists online?!

I’m beyond excited for this.

I also found the trailer wryly amusing in that they seem to be blatantly going after the same themes Snyder did (a good thing, in my opinion) just wrapped in a more colorful and optimistic package. I also felt a ton of the JLU animated “Cadmus” arc in the dialogue between Lois and Clark/Superman, which is a GREAT thing in my opinion.

Also:
The recently-revealed Spin Master action figure set has Lex in his battle armor. If we seriously get that in the film I’ll basically lose my mind. Soooo excited to finally get a Lex Luthor who actually acts like Lex Luthor instead of an Elon Musk-y incel creep or a real estate swindler.

I haven't been this excited about a movie in a while.
Yeah, I think I'm right there with you.

I posted before that I'm always ready for a new take on Superman.....comics, TV, movies, whatever......and I hope whatever the next take is turns out to be successful. I want this one to succeed.

I've been doing a comic book movie fast in general, I got burned out on them. I felt like they were being made just to be made. This will be the movie that I come out of my fast for. One of my students gave me an AMC gift card for the last day of school and I'm saving it for that. I think I'm actually going to avoid all spoilers, and seriously, you don't even need to click on links anymore, they'll put big, bold spoilers right in your feed. It basically means shutting off the internet completely, and I'll be OK with that.

In a new, exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly ahead of the launch of Superman, Gunn officially confirms that a Wonder Woman movie is in development as we speak. "Wonder Woman's a separate thing" to the already announced Paradise Lost HBO/Max series, which is "slow moving, but it's moving," Gunn says. "We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now."
