DC Studios Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

My understanding is the upcoming Supergirl movie is based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comics by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. I did not read them when they first came out but I bought the trade paperback and I thought it was excellent. It was nominated for a Hugo Award and deservedly so. That's one of the main reasons I'm so anxious for the film.

The book is still in print and probably will be forever. I highly recommend it.

This was an excellent read, it's the reason I'm excited about the Supergirl movie. The current Phoenix book at Marvel is ripping off some of its plot, but not as well.

Finally got out to see Supes. Very good, enjoyed it, great start to the new DCU.

  • Loved the tone and Superman's characterization as being frustrated that "keeping folks from dying" wasn't enough justification to intervene for some folks. However, I found his "I am flawed human" speech at the end a little forced...
  • The dropping in mid-Metahuman world worked fine I thought. I mainly know Mr. Terrific from JLU animated and enjoyed his character. Guy may not have been jerky enough. Hawkgirl - I realized after the scene at the Hall of Justice that I couldn't remember if her wings were visible? I assume they are?
  • Lois was well done, I felt we needed to know more about Jimmy to understand why Ms. Teschmacher even would know who he was, let alone pine after him.
  • I liked the portrayal of Lex although I felt it would have been better if the original theory that he was mad at Superman because he interfered in his plans was better than being mad at Superman for just being. Felt that Supes should have wondered immediately how the video was gotten (and not have someone ask) and also been more concerned about how they got in - kind of made him look not as clever as he ought to be.
  • Krypto seemed like he was in one scene too many for me in terms of playing a critical role. Were we supposed to know who the woman in the dress in the pocket universe prison was, they focused on her being greeted by her parents at the end?
  • I felt the world turned on Supes and then turned on Lex too quickly, but will leave that to storytelling compression.
  • One missed opportunity, I felt Supes should have visited the kids with the flag in Jarhanpur at the end and explained why he couldn't be there...

I managed to not know they had actually filmed in Cincy at Union Station for the Hall of Justice - if you haven't been that is a gorgeous building and was in fact the design inspiration for the Hall of Justice from the Superfriends cartoon. The scene with the Justice Gang was filmed inside the building as well - no CGI in the interior in that sequence, the inside looks just like that. And the "garage door" on the side was real as well - part of an amazing design for buses and cars could enter on one side, drive ramps down below the main hall to pick up and drop off passengers nearer the tracks, then come out the other side. The location still houses the train station but also has some museums in it. Well worth a visit.

I felt the world turned on Supes and then turned on Lex too quickly, but will leave that to storytelling compression.
It's funny, twenty years ago I would've said the same thing, but I actually walked out of there thinking: Americans turning on someone who has their best interests at heart based on a single video posted by that person's enemy? We've seen that at lest three times this week! Felt like it only exaggerated the turn by hours rather than days.

I was looking to buy the Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow TPB but the hype and the fact that the SG movie is based on it has apparently caused it to sell out.
