DC Studios Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

Honestly, there isn't a lot on the DC movie slate that really excites me, but I do admire them for creating a multi-genre fun house.

It sounds like they're really intent on giving each movie its own feel, like cop drama or horror or murder mystery.

The MCU dabbled in this with Captain America's political thriller and Ant-Man's heist film, but I don't feel like they capitalized on it as much as they could have. Beyond anything else, New Mutants gets a lot of points from me for making it a horror movie.

Superman was fucking incredible. I loved it.

And despite Vol. 3 & 1 of Guardians being my favorite movies of all time, I was genuinely worried for this movie (not that I disliked TSS, far from it), so I went in cautious with low expectations of enjoying it, and high expectations of disliking it.

But it was amazing.

Was Lanterns being about John Stewart not already known? He was cast as the lead awhile ago.

Not sure this is accurate of Lex - he was genuinely trying to help himself with the justification he was helping other people. But we never see him genuinely help a single other person.

The relationship between him and Superman is a bit like Mozart and Salieri - I guess they've always been like that, but this movie made me realize it.
Totally fair. Due to not really being a prior Superman fan, my knowledge of Lex is still growing. I know he sees himself as the savior of mankind (or at least that he should be the savior over Superman), but I'm still figuring out the nuance. Nevertheless, I liked what they did with Lex. As someone who can never directly go toe-to-toe with Superman (at least until he gets his supersuit), I think they did a great job at still making him threatening.

Of course I was kidding. It seems like so much of the stuff we love here (Star Wars, superheroes, cartoons, etc) tend to generate what I think is fake or manufactured outrage among certain groups of people who I consider to be non-fans. The right and "go woke go broke" crowd were praying for a Superman bomb. My spoiler was more or less a spoof on that.
My bad. The coffee hadn't yet kicked in when I read the post, so sarcasm wasn't easily detected. But rather than moving on like a rational person, I'll instead generate fake outrage that you duped me so easily. 🤪

It took me a while, but I finally remembered what Hawkgirl reminded me of.

I'm always a week behind on everything, but just saw Superman and honestly, this is the Superman movie I've needed forever. I can't say enough good things about it - just masterfully making a decent, wholesome hero worth rooting for and understanding the core of what makes the character special. And my gawd Gunn gives a master class in making use of deep dive and core supporting characters relevant, engaging, and worth caring about.

My partner knows nothing about most comic book characters below A-listers and she said "I don't understand the guy with the hair but he reminds me of your cousins and I love him," and she thought Mr. Terrific was amazing. She also GRABBED MY ARM in the theater not at an action part but when Krypto was basically a CGI version of OUR rescue dog. Such a perfect and perfectly ridiculous edition to the script.

She also said "I didn't want to like Brosnahan as Lois but she was great," and I was thinking man, Lois casting over the decades has been REALLY solid, hasn't it. Just a character that attracts great casting choices.

And something I appreciated Gunn doing that both the MCU and DC franchises have always, ALWAYS, been bad about:

He didn't throw away all the toys. He established the makings of a cinematic universe but left it open for him to revisit almost all of these characters in the future to develop them further - no one and done throwaway jokes or or wasted villains. I can't WAIT to see what he does with everyone who survived the film.

I was onto Rachel Brosnahan early. While I didn't think much of her in House of Cards (not her fault, it was a nothing part), I'm sure glad Amy Sherman-Palladino did. She's marvelous in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Credit to Gunn for casting her here, too. He could've gone with a 22-year-old (see Superman Returns), but he went with an actress with real chops instead. Brosnahan might be the best Lois Lane we've had, and as @docsilence alluded to, that's impressive. She's totally believable as a fast-talking, whip-smart reporter.

They nailed Clark, Lois, and Jimmy. Corenswet is annoyingly charming for someone so handsome.

Brosnahan’s casting announcement years ago made me watch Maisel. I still haven’t finished the last couple seasons but she’s the main reason I was interested in this movie at all.
