CREATIVE BEAST STUDIOS Beasts of the Meso/Ceno/Cyberzoic

Agreeing that I'd prefer a wider armspread, it's interesting to note paleontologists don't appear to pose Smileys with a lot of arm-spread. Aside from the disassembled layout pic and maybe the crouched-down-on-all-four pic these all look like poses CyberSmiley could hold. Silva's been honest from the get-go his goal was museum-level accuracy to these critters:

This one looks like the widest pose they give it:

Here's Argenteus Ross. Having a bit more mass to him they gave him spinning-meat hindarms so everyone can be happy. The blades snap very nicely into both his pack and forearms; apologies for no pics of such. It's the day after Election Day here in Texas and we've got a metric shitload of Provisional ballots to investigate and cure towards counting or not. I clocked 16.75 hours yday. I'm tired, boss. I'll have to get to the KS set tmrw.

I do like my Smiley; but I also do wish he could get into the cattest cat pose I see my lazy bastards doing nearly every time I look at them:

Your prior post and cmoney's were enlightening. I haven't been dino/ice age deep since maybe third grade. Cool to learn.

It also tracks with those old plastic figurines we had in the 80s. The smilodon was always narrow and posed stalking like that.

Argenteus looks really cool. I'll politely ask that you guys refrain from showing any cool pictures of figures I don't own already, because I don't want to be convinced to buy more stuff. Thank you for your cooperation.

All this Ice Age talk… CBS needs to make a giant ground sloth to go with the Mammoth and Sabertooth Tiger, dammit!

Also “whelmed” is a good way to describe my feelings about this latest wave too, I was looking forward to getting the Smilodon armors so my JoyToy April and Casey would have something to sit on, expected a simple slip or clip on system, this is a fucking nightmare puzzle I don’t want to deal with… why is the helmet three pieces?!?! The clip tolerances on my set doesn’t seem great either. I’m probably going to leave the exclusive Sabertooth tiger nude and dress up the basic Smilodon so the armor ends up chipping paint I can replace it.

I had to ram a tiny screwdriver through the holes in the smiley helmet to open them up enough to accept the pegs for the side-pieces. Trick I learned trying to get fucking scabbards and stuff onto Boss Fight figures.

It's not really about being early, none of the modern cats are directly descended from the sabertooths I don't think. Smilodon was thought to be an ambush predator, last I read, built more for power than chasing and agility. Powerful build, somewhat more bear-like, front legs adapted for strength and pinning prey.

I think I read somewhere that smilodon and other species of saber cats are more genetically similar to the modern hyena

So's your mom.

Dude what the fuck is the matter with you???? I hope you got hacked because under no circumstances is that kind of comment okay. Especially one that came out of the blue like that.

Unacceptable behavior. Completely unacceptable.

Sorry, man. A few of us have done the 'so is your mom' joke on the forum here, to the point where it feels like it became one of the forum in-jokes, like how Ru always talks about dicks. Just goofing around. Genuinely didn't mean to offend.

He's offered a sincere apology. Those kinds of jokes go well beyond the pages of this forum are so old and worn out that they've become a silly go-to anti-joke. He certainly didn't mean any harm or insult at all and he's genuinely sorry that you took it that way. Just a hiccup that can happen when things are written instead of said out loud. Let's not linger on this.

Spent an hour fighting with the armor, trying to get it to snap, trying to get it to stand, finally getting smiley all dressed up only decide, yeah, it kind only needs the saddle… The helmet and shin guards don’t add much and let me see less of the cat.

JoyToy April looks great on it, fits great on it, so mission accomplished I guess (now to never look at my recites to see how much I spent on a 1:18 saddle ever again…)

Edit: assembled just the green armor’s saddle only for Cenozoic black Smilodon for Casey and wow! Looks even better! Can’t do much besides stand there but looks fun doing it!

I don’t care what anyone says or thinks, Allosaurus Jimmandseni is getting top marks from me and is a strong contender for FOTY this year. Despite the fact that I purchased the Hot Toys Batman 89 and Batman Returns figures this year, despite the fact that the X-Men 97 Sentinel might possibly ship before the end of the year, and even despite the Marvel Legends gamerverse offerings turned out so good this year…I am beyond elated that we finally get this Allosaurus. It’s my favorite carnivorous dinosaurs but hasn’t had much good representation

Is it the sculpt and paint or the articulation? I've watched reviews of it, and aside from the scientific accuracy I like the Hammond Collection allosaurus more than what I've seen in the reviews from the Creative Beast version. That Mattel allosaurus is one of the best dinos they've done.

I respect the scientific accuracy, but I just can't get past how so many of the Creative Beast figures can't stand up without a prop. I can get the Hammond allosaurus into a HUGE variety of stable poses with no extra support so every Creative Beast review I watch seems like a downgrade for double or triple the price.

That is saying a lot since Zabu can hardly move at all.

As compared to what? I try to buy almost every highly articulated animal that hits the market, and Zabu has better articulation than almost all of the others I have. What's particularly good is that he's got decent side-to-side movement on the legs which REALLY helps with articulation, yet most horses, cats, canines, and other animals barely have any. I know from the reviews that the Creative Beast smilodon barely has any side-to-side hip motion at all, and that severely restricts posability.
