G.I. Joe Head Canon & Fanfic Filecards

There's actually a few existing characters that -could- work in a sense for something like this; Data Vipers would obviously be pulled in to assess all the systems and data available at The Pit.
You could also tap some of the less-used later characters like Crimson Asp for Cobra, or make it one of Destro's guys; General Mayhem.
I like that line of thinking because I don't think everybody involved would need to be a Name.

Been planting seeds all along of the different generic troops being as scary if not scarier than the named characters, so I love the idea of basically the Accounting Viper going oh hey these numbers don't match up...

It almost feels cruel or ghoulish to post this one right now, but I also think it's a bit cathartic, because the guys who step up in real life deserve their moment in the sun in fiction, too.

Code Name: Lifeline (Disavowed)
File Name: Steen, Edwin C.
Primary Military Specialty: Medic
Secondary Military Specialty: Rescue Operations
Birthplace: Seattle, Washington
Rank: E-5

Subject returned to civilian life after disbandment of the GI Joe Unit and enrolled in courses that would allow him to pursue an advanced degree in medicine so that he could use his combat medic skills in non-combat life. He has, however, become embroiled in the rising number of protests to President Lewis's administration. Agents have identified Steen as both an observer and volunteer medic at many anti-Lewis demonstrations. While he has taken no violent action against the administration, any former Joe, even someone relatively unimportant and rarely engaged in actual combat, is cause for concern. Surveillance assigned to Steen have been instructed to make note of his known associates not just to track his connection to other Joes but also any civilian protesters who may become persons of interest in the future.

"Of course Lifeline's an activist. You know why he enlisted in the first place, right? Because being a paramedic in the civilian world had too many restrictions on it. He wasn't allowed to help people ENOUGH working for the FIRE DEPARTMENT, so he decided to run into combat to patch us back together. Dude's not a pacifist, he's filled with righteous anger because he thinks nothing should get in the way of doing the right thing. We haven't brought him in on the work we're doing yet not because we don't trust him but because he, just like always did as a Joe, keeps running into danger to be a hero, and we're not ready to cover for that smoke yet. I just hope he stays safe. We're going to need him when the rubber meets the road, and there's no doubt in anyone's mind he'll step up when we ask."

Lifeline is okay, I never felt one way or the other about him. He has a hyper-red costume. But yeah, that card was fantastic and got me excited for him damnit.

I guess the theme today is "street-level heroes."

Code Name: Barbecue (Disavowed)
File Name: Kelly, Gabriel A.
Primary Military Specialty: Fireman
Secondary Military Specialty: Infantry
Birthplace: Boston, Massachusetts
Rank: E-4

Subject, quite predictably, joined the Boston Fire Department following his retirement from the GI Joe Unit. This seems to suit him well and keeps him out of the sort of trouble the Lewis administration worries about with former Joes - Kelly appears to be content to simply be a firefighter as had been the tradition in his family prior to his joining the military. Despite what one might consider a generous pension from his time with the Joes, Kelly volunteers for as much overtime as is allowed and requests the most dangerous jobs he can. This is the one activity that is of concern - like many in his disbanded unit, he seems to continue to seek heroic activities. The temptation to regress is the primary reason we maintain surveillance on an otherwise benign veteran.

"Of course Barbecue joined the family business. What else was he doing to do? Being a fireman is all he's ever known. He'd wither and die if he didn't have a burning building to run into. Or maybe the more appropriate metaphor is he'd burn out and turn to ash. In any event, Barbecue's doing what he's always done - looking for action. He gets bored if he doesn't have someone to rescue, a door to knock down, a life to save. He acts like a buffoon and he pretends to be an idiot but in his heart he's just a big damned hero, and he wants to be a big damned hero like his dad and grandad. It's the family curse. They see a fire, they run into it. They see trouble, they step up. It'll probably get him killed some day. But it's also why we know that, when we need him, Barbecue will smash down any door in his way to join us."

True story, I remember exactly who gave me Lifeline (my childhood best friend) and when (for my birthday one year) and I'll always remember him fondly for that, but yeah, he has a hilariously ugly costume.

Heh, true. I think Lifeline was my first figure besides any hand-me-downs from my cousin that suffered brokedick. I had a few with broken thumbs but there was one figure i had whose hand broke the other way and all he had left was a thumb. I am going to try to remember who that was.

Also Barbecue was perfect. Really good balance with his heroic tendencies and the goofster quality of the show.
Took me way too long to get to the Boston Irish firefighter.

If I end up outpacing the release schedule of Classified figures with these cards I"m going to be ashamed.

he seems to continue to see heroic activities.
Seek?

Love both cards. The Lifeline one almost hurts to read right now, to be honest. But it's wildly appropriate to the character and our current moment. Barb is also terrific. I really like digging into these Joes that aren't really part of the current 'resistance' but always end up having something in the card pointing out that, when it comes to it, they're still Joes and everyone knows these guys can be counted on to show up ten toes down.

At this rate, you are gonna.
But, to be fair, it takes a lot longer to develop an action figure and bring it to market, even as part of a regular ongoing line, than it does for a professional writer to feel creative and crank out some paragraphs about a thing he's interested in. If Doc were writing entire books between releases, I'd say he's obsessing a bit.
Also.. it's not like every release is a unique character.

Seek! Fixing. The problem with non-typo typos and writing at 1 a.m. I already fixed two other typos in his card.

I actually wondered if Lifeline's card was pushing on the bruise, but reading his OG card... dude would BE at protests right now, that's the character, that's who he is.

And I kinda struggled figuring out what Barbecue would be, but there's a thing in his OG card about how he doesn't actually care about the family business, he just likes the wind in his hair and the sirens and the movement. He's an action junkie.
