Masters of the Universe: Masterverse

I'm looking forward to the movie, regardless. Figures from the movie, not so much. Definitely waiting for streaming, though as there's no way I'm going to pay movie theater prices to see this.

A lot of it looks cool.
I just . . . really, really, REALLY hate tying any of this to Earth. I hate Marlena being from earth in older continuity as well. It takes the specialness away for me, just another “chosen Earth guy vs aliens” thing. That said: I’ll check this out.

I kind of look at it as reverse Superman.

Or John Carter of Mars.

Yup, and if I wanted that, I’d go watch Superman, or John Carter of Mars.
🤷‍♂️

I don’t like John Carter much, either. I’m just not into those “human guy goes somewhere, finds another culture, winds up leading said culture in battle” stories.

Also I hate He-Man/Prince Adam being a “SHAZAM!”-style power fantasy. If the 1987 He-Man movie had stayed on Eternia, it would be a top-tier movie for me.

I think there's some really interesting questions here. I don't think you should have humans as parallel evolution with themselves. Which means either humans on Earth came from Eternia, or ALL humans on Eternia originally came from Earth, not just Marlena. And Eternia does have humans.

So did Marlena accidentally crash land on a planet we already crash-landed on millennia before, somehow. Or, Oooooorrrrr.... did Marlena accidentally crash land on.. dun dun dun.... our home planet.

I think my ideal fantasy setting just assumes humans are from whatever fantasy planet we're on and that Earth just straight up doesn't exist. But I don't think that's the only way to do it. The good thing about MOTU is there's so many different versions that have no impact on each other at all. Though, I would dearly love a MOTU movie or cartoon/TV show that's just pulling straight from the early mini-comics.

That teaser was fun, and the movie looks like it's fun. Not too serious, but still likely enjoyable. I can't wait to see the full trailer tomorrow. Seeing Cringer in a live action film on this teaser made me so happy. I love Cringer/Battle Cat, and that was the aspect I most wanted in the 80's He-Man movie that didn't happen. I'm so excited to see Battle Cat.

I think this more fun, not too serious approach is probably the best way to handle this film at this point. Drawing in kids and new fans, along with hitting that nostalgic sweet spot from the Filmation cartoon for all of us lifelong fans.

I would love a cartoon or movie that was far more serious, that covered the more Conan like, barbarian sword and sorcery feel of the artwork and early mini comics. Just on Eternia with far more serious threats and stakes.

But I think from a money-making standpoint, and a way to bring something back and draw in older and newer fans at the same time, the way they seem to have handled this film is the right move.

That’s my preferred continuity, for sure. No Adam, no Keldor, no “Captain Glenn”.

I think the dividing line is that beyond having some Eternian machines and stuff, I have no interest in this property being “science fiction”. I prefer it as fantasy, without needing to explain where the humans come from and whatnot.

I think Marlena just did a lot o' fuckin' before settling down with Randor. Lots of cousin siblings.

Thus, lots of inbreeding going on. Which can only explain Two-Bad...

Yeah. I think they're seeing that this property is still out here actively making money, and it's the exact kind of property that parents enjoy with their kids. So if you can make a movie that's fun for adults and kids, you can grab a whole new generation.

I had started a response about how I thought the average viewer of this movie would be safely over 40, but then reconsidered as I know that Netflix has had at least one relatively recent animated series aimed at kids (not the Kevin Smith one). I sincerely hope that this does attract a wider age range audience to help this IP become increasingly more relevant again. If it does, it opens up the possibility for others as well.

Having He-Man on our Earth is of damned near zero interest to me, but I will admit when I paused the trailer I screamed THATS FUCKING BATTLECAT out loud. Like, I barely go to the theater anymore so I'm not the target audience for this, but I will admit to loving seeing a good CGI Battlecat/Cringer. My love for that stupid tiger knows no bounds.

I'm with Damien in that I'd love a He-Man story that pulls right from the mini-comics, but I think we're a very, very tiny minority. Hey @Damien would you hunt me down and end my life if I started a "based on the mini-comics" file card thread for MOTU characters like I've been doing for Classified?
