Hasbro Made-to-Order Figures

Well, you know, maybe next time someone can tell them that you can just call that a 'pre-order' like everyone else. Hasbro wouldn't be the only company to do a pre-order and warn people that pre-ordering is the only way to be sure they'll get it because in stock sales will be extremely limited. Mezco built their entire brand on not calling it MTO, but making sure you knew that if you didn't pre-order there was a good chance you wouldn't get it.
I get why they'd want to call it something other than a "preorder", though, because it's different than how Hasbro preorders usually work - using the same word would be inconsistent and invite confusion, so they had to clearly distinguish it. I'm pretty sure it was otherwise pitched exactly the same - preordering is the only guarantee, and any in-stock sales will be limited. 5-6,000 extras could be as little as 10-20% overage of actual orders, which seems reasonable.

Whatever the case, I'm a big fan of this model if it gets them taking on bigger/weirder items while ditching the crowdfund approach. I'm glad they aren't treating these as preciously as Haslabs and only running one per year. I wouldn't mind seeing them accelerate it a bit - do 2-3 Dragon Man/Mephisto type projects next year and one bigger, more popular/expensive one like the Sentinel or Apocalypse.

I'm willing to cut them some slack on this one due to the likely added cost from the tariffs maybe changing their thinking. No matter what, if you placed and kept your preorder you got a better deal.

A bit different than Super7 which was claiming "we are only making the number that was ordered" on everything to justify the pricing.

It's the exact same lie as Super7. Exact same. If you say it's 'made to order' and it isn't, then you lied.

And in case it's not coming across -let me be really clear that I don't give a fuck how limited the Sentinels are. It's not me like 'I wanted it to be ultra exclusive so only me and the people that pre-ordered it can EVER have it.' I don't care if they make a million of these things. I do care about dishonesty. That bugs me and that's the only reason I bring any of this up at all.

I'm glad everybody loves this thing. I'm extremely jealous. With that in mind...

Dear Hasbro,

We've proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that we'll buy Sentinels in unprecedented quantities. Seriously. The evil mutant-killing robot must be a top 10 seller in Marvel Legends.

Can we please get a smaller version? The 5POA Marvel Legends 375 doesn't cut it when compared to this beauty.

If you want exact measurements, my shelves are just over 12" apart.

I promise it'll sell.

Yours,
TSI

The actual product pages for both Mephisto and Apocalypse say nothing about made-to-order - just that there was a pre-order window. I forget how they spoke about it during the video streams, but if all they said was that pre-ordering guaranteed getting it, and that it was limited, people may have inferred it was MTO. But the language isn't like a HasLab where they are clear if you don't back, you won't get one from them.

I'd like a nicely done 9" or 10" version that is the Mark I first appearance Sentinels.

They've definitely said the words 'made to order' like a billion times. I'm not saying it's legally binding just because some Hasbro rep said it out loud. But 'not legally binding' and 'not a lie' aren't the same. And a lie for linguistic convenience is -still- a lie. I don't even know why it bothers me so much. I'm sure it's a neurodivergence thing.

I'll sign the petition as a comrade. But I actually can't see myself buying another sentinel ever again at this point. This one is a very good scale for what I want. I wouldn't have been mad if it were 4-6" smaller, to be honest. But I'm also not going to buy new ones that are smaller now that I've got this one on the way. Unless I win the lottery or something. Then I almost definitely will buy loads of sentinels.

All I know is there was a time I'd likely have bought two of these, at the very least. That was a time when I didn't have to worry about finances strangling me every month. I didn't even buy one, and have to live vicariously through y'all. I'm not crying though...I still have the old ToyBiz Sentinel BAF on my shelf, so I have one of those killer robots represented.

They did mention previously that they intended to make the 2pack rock-included Sentinels from the Konami game in other colors besides the hot pink (as is the case with the alternate colors available presently) but that they also have considered doing them in traditional Sentinel colors, which is what I would be buying mass quantities of.

I imagine, just as a guess, cancellations or unresolved CC issues represent maybe -hundreds- of figures, but definitely not thousands. So that's still a pretty massive amount of extra figures Hasbro produced over and above what was ordered. Again, in my opinion.

My assumptions is that with X-Men 97 coming 6 months from now roughly, Hasbro decided to order a glut at whatever their current price is to either avoid further tariffs, or to arbitrarily jack up the prices yet again, as they've already done once. They seem to be embracing reissues and making more money off old stuff, so I wouldn't be surprised if we see this model again after this lot finally sells out. They've pretty much shown that "limited" and "exclusivity" are words used on the populace to get them to buy things NOW, not because those words are actually being used in the ways they are meant to be used.

Got two Sentinels, and these are fantastic! Excellent size and articulation. I love the classic aesthetic. It’s great that you can create two different looks using the battle damaged parts. The blast effects are very cool.

Playing with the kids in the living room!

Oh yeah. As I've said; there's tons of valid reasons to make lots of Sentinels. I think it's a good idea to do so, myself. I just don't like dishonest marketing practices. I feel compelled to point out one more time, just in case, that my complaint isn't "these aren't as limited as I thought they would be/think they should be." I think exclusivity is a sucky idea that ruins the hobby. I just want them to be honest in their marketing. If it's a pre-order, NOT a made-to-order, just say that. Using dishonesty to get better upfront numbers feels icky.

They probably pumped the numbers up solely because this thread has a multiplier attached to it every time any one posts.

"Might get one more."
"Considering getting a few more."
"Odd numbers bother me, might have to get more."

Hasbro: $ay Le$$, Thots.

Oh I’m absolutely certain there is an appreciable effect on the hype that these sentinels generate on social media. I’ve seen them everywhere. ESPECIALLY instagram. And you just know that as soon as the collect-o-sphere starts hyping up marvel legends stuff it’s going to be immediately followed by big sales numbers. Especially if it’s a one of a kind piece like this. Feels very icky in a dystopian post-GlenGarry GlenRoss kind of way.
