G.I. Joe Classified Series: The Chatty Pointless Thread & Performance Art

the Viper and Eel don't feel as much like the regular, basic troops the V1s did to me.
Oh THAT is totally fair. I never thought of them as basics either. I was the direct and specific demographic for the original Vipers, Eels, etc, and I could never square the circle that they were just new uniforms when the v2s came out. I always thought of the v2 Eel as a “heavy” Eel, like a Crimson Guard vs a Crimson Guard Immortal (which is technically a v2 itself and we need it desperately), whereas the Viper felt like a “special ops” stealth-trooper version of the Viper. Could that Eel and that Viper have had totally different code names rather than be v2s? Absolutely. And yet, here we are.
I really do want to see how cool it can look too.
I’m gonna keep banging this drum because I really do believe it is the biggest possible design for a major Classified glow up. Doesn’t even need a redesign: just let the card art come to life.

(V3 is still my biggest Snake-Eyes want though)

WAIT I forgot possibly the biggest and most awesome v2: TOXO-VIPER. Now v1 is awesome, but v2 slaps harder AND has a zombie variant!!!!

Yeah, that makes sense to me as well. some kinda super viper/eel. And Doc and I were just talking about the Immortals; would really love to see those in Classified.

Yeah, which the gas masky-kinda look, etc? Definitely.

Goddamnit Hasbro. Why didn't you have the courage to just come up with a new name for the latest basic troop? You had the Cobra Trooper, then the Viper, now do a new thing. I guess they leaned too hard into the Viper naming with all the subgroups etc. Which I still am not a fan of.

Some characters really need that philosophy, of just following the original art.

Maybe *all* of them??? I’m sure that I could think of a character or two who would be best if they didn’t strictly follow the card art, but on the whole . . . Oh and *especially* the Snake-Eyes variants, absolutely no ARAH Snake-Eyes figure is remotely as cool as its corresponding card art. V4 is the worst offender but they are all poor renditions of awesome art. Actually, v3 probably had the best transition from art to figure, back in the day.

Yeeeeeaaaaaaah I agree. Too many “-Viper” characters. Weirdly it made the non “-Vipers” feel more special: like, say, Incinerators, Night Creepers, etc.

Adding all of these specialist Vipers to my file card to-do list.

Speaking of variants, though I hypothetically have every version of Flint I want (modern, tiger force, and retro) and love all three, but I would preorder his eco-warriors green jumpsuit so hard my credit card would beg for mercy.

I would say most because I know there is at least one where I was glad they veered away from the original art some, but cannot remember who it was. Well, I guess I like the original Rock N Roll's arms and shirt, and Darklon I think is cooler. And some of the later designs they haven't touched yet I hope they veer some too. but yeah, for the most part, stick to the art.

And it would be cool if they include two heads with V3! That would tempt me to get two of him, unless they do the Payne brothers, heh.

You're right, it really did. Even when I was a kid, I was excited when a non-Viper army builder came out.

And I still say specialist Vipers should have just been the Cobra Island Viper figure with a new helmet, sometimes new vest, and the new weapons. I get away with this because I have figures like the Frag Viper unmasked as a unique character, but I really think that would have been cooler. Still a Viper but mission specific gear.

Haw! It's gonna be REALLY interesting when they start doing figures from that era, and not just the Eco guys. Like Ace said, the bulky space BAAT, DEF, etc.

Aaaaaaah I fucked up.
I meant v4 was the best translation from art to figure, NF the worst.

V3 is an okay translation, but I hate the wraparound silver goggles on the figure. Peaked sunglasses all the way!

Well... I hovered over the 'unfriend' button a moment but... okay, yeah. but still would like the two heads because I want the Payne brother to be different from the Snake Eyes V3 look. I would go with the original card art design.

The thing I struggle with for V3 is the thing I MOST look forward to in Classified - so much of his gear was sculpted on and I would love to see if they can give us a lean, mobile Snake Eyes who can, without ruining the figure, have grenades, spike-knuckle trench knives, and the series' silliest sword all on him at the same time.

I am ashamed to say I had to look up what Ninja Force SE even looked like. Probably the only version of him I never had as a kid. Somehow NF Scarlett is burned eternally into my memory but I have memory holed SE himself.

Yeah, that is a must! The V3 body without all the gear is really cool, but yeah I wanna load him up with ALL OF IT.

I don't think you were missing much, despite how cool the design can be, since he was taking a weird step backward in articulation.

Like, can I just say after watching Bee's Night Viper review, that I'm actually a little bit done with 'a ton of weapons and a place to store them all?' I think, in some cases, I'd actually be okay with a NON-removable item. Heresy, I know. But like, I'm basically never going to pose a Night Viper holding two knives. But I am going to constantly be trying to pose him holding a gun around that absurd-looking knife sheath on his fucking chest with the big knife handle sticking up into his goddamn mouth.

“Storing all the gear on the figure” *can* be fun, but I definitely don’t *need* that, ESPECIALLY when it’s fiddly and gets in the way. I do tend to like a leaner loadout, particularly since I play with the things. When I do my “fight club” figures, I strip all the extraneous gear off when I add the fists.

Ohhhh and about v2s: I actually *do* accept the v2 BATs as standard troops, to me they are literally just the “BAT mark 2”, just a later basic model with upgrades inherent to ongoing R&D. Not “replacing” the original model, because Cobra loves to keep using shit until it literally falls apart or explodes, but like the OG was discontinued at some point in favor of the new model.
