General Marvel Legends

The 70's came along and creators like Denny O'Neil, Neal Adams, Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers took Batman back to his pulp roots.
A shamefully underrated team that is always getting overlooked.

I'm also a fan of Doug Moench. I was reading his arc with Gene Colan and Don Newton that introduced Nocturna. Good writing, good art, but with Batman bouncing between Vicci Vale, Alfred's pre-Crisis daughter, and Nocturna (who is in a love triangle with Batman and her criminal step brother) as well as court room Jason Todd adoption drama, the soap opera meter was about as high as any superhero comic I've ever read. Still liked it.

Also, speaking of Bruce Timm, he'll be in my area this weekend and I wonder if I should dig up a choice Batman TAS item for signing. Batman Adventures 12 springs to mind but maybe there's something else.......he'd be my second stop, however, because I'm FINALLY going to get to meet Amy Jo Johnson (the Pink Ranger) who is the final surviving original Power Rangers cast member that I have yet to meet. Can't wait.

Marvel Legends!

you and i just became best friends cause Doug Moench is my absolute favorite Bat writer because of this period.

Denny O'Neil gave us Talia and Ras and they're neat, and no hope in crime alley is cool, and
Joker's 5 way revenge is great, but beyond that...it was pretty bland era. His editing though, that seems to be when he shone (even with weird takes like his insistence that Batman is a virgin, lmao)

oh, right, legend,s uh...they should make the B.A.D. Girls

And, uh... The Posse

Doug Moench and Kelley Jones, man- what a gothic dream team. Kelley Jones has done some of my favorite renditions of Bats and his rogues. Not Moench, but Jones drew on Kings of Fear, and man, what delicious visuals. Like I just smoked a big bowl and am having a bad trip, but in the best way. I like my Scarecrow kooky and angular and my Batman 80% cape and 15% ears.

All this talk about classic iconic Batman creative teams has me really wishing we had a Legends-compatible DC line. Imagine if we had had that since 2002 and our Batman & his Rogues shelf was as full as our Spidey & his Rogues shelf, and our top ten lists were filled with team completers like Kole, Bloodwynd, and Looker. I'd be broke and have no space but it would be nice!

Honestly, this is my "please before I shuffle off this mortal coil, let this happen" wish. I feel like I've been chasing a Batman that looks good next to a Legends Daredevil since I started collecting as an adult. (And I have some good Batman figures! But I just don't have two lines that look like they're operating by the same rules of physics. I want Cap and Superman to hang out on a shelf together and look natural, too.)

While I don’t think Batman needs to be campy, can we get at least one live-action Batman movie is fun and a little more family friendly? something not “dark and gritty.” Just try it, please. And put a little color in his costume.

And don't be afraid to put Robin on screen.

I have a feeling this is what James Gunn will be going for when he gets around to Batman. Especially if they keep the Pattinson Batman around simultaneously, surely they won't have TWO grim, gritty, "grounded in the real world" renditions of Batman going on at once.....will they?

A Legends-compatible DC line is what everyone hopes for, I think, but unfortunately DC does the license shuffle a lot more than Marvel so they are having to hit the reset button more often. In which case who knows what scale or aesthetic you might be getting. Then you have to wait a few years before they cycle through all the multiple versions of the top tier characters before you get to the lesser-knowns that give the line flavor but make the million-dollar toy company that makes them get a little nervous about their pocketbook. It takes about 25 years for a toy line to get to the point Marvel Legends is at, and DC is constantly starting back as square one.

Here, I'll switch us back to ML:

Astonishing Wolverine reissue goes up fore preorder this week. I need to decide if I want to open the Astonishing floodgates. I have Astonishing Emma (who is slightly less annoying to stand than 97 Emma) but that's it. I liked the Astonishing run well enough, but it's nice to have a cut-off point....
