Super 7 Ultimates Thread

Biker Mice and I think the PDNA Earthworm Jim figure (?) had similar elbows, yeah. Problem is, both were smaller, less experienced companies and even on those figures the elbows looked shit.
So yeah, those elbows look shit. Imagine making your figures look objectively worse for no mechanical benefit at all just because you suck at making toys and refuse to get better.

The figures mostly look fine. But, typically, Super7 Turtles always do. Super7 figures suffer mechanically and I don't see anything here that suggests these are any better than 'the good' S7 figures. So.... great? But not worth their asking price. Especially now.

Also, they can fuck of with another price increase, for sure.

Poked around the Super7 website to see how this 8% tariff fee is being implemented. And they do call it a tariff fee on their website, if anyone felt the email was cryptic. If you preorder something, it's part of the purchase price right out of the gate. I suspect there will be no refunds if there isn't any increased tariff by the time something ships, even though they're acting like they might do that. Also, if you want to order an in-stock action figure from them that too is subject to the new fee which makes no sense. That's product already in a warehouse not subjected to increased tariffs. Now, I get it in business you account for expected future price increases that may come to fruition by hiking the price of product you already have a final cost on, but this is still pretty different from what everyone else is doing. I'm guessing their spin would be, "Well, if we just applied a fee to the stuff that hasn't shipped it would have to be more than 8% so we're spreading it out," but that's stupid. We all can see this tariff thing is subject to the whims of a toddler in charge. They could be here today and gone tomorrow, just invoice people if you really want help covering the cost of the tariffs. Otherwise, this just looks like a naked attempt to raise prices across the board basically making all Ultimates figures now 60 or 70 dollars depending on the starting price. Good luck to them.

Isn't it strange how, in this wild and wacky world, sometimes a thing can just look like exactly what it is?

Welp.

This won't be reported anywhere else, but Super7 decided to lay off a large chunk of their workforce yesterday, somewhere in the range of 20% of their staff. And they've given up their booth at SDCC this year.

I feel like this may be premature, because we don't know where we will be come July, but...there it is. Brian gonna Brian.

I wonder if it is anyone we would be familiar with? Mainly the guys who do any of the Youtube interviews. I think the tariff thing is just the final straw and can't imagine that the company has been too healthy for a while now.

Definitely not a good sign when a company leaves a con, though in the case of Super7, I always wondered what the point of their display was? They usually don't announce stuff at cons, save for some of their big pieces (Tiamat, Cat's Lair, that GI Joe ship that didn't fund), so I can see the value not being there for them. On the other hand, last year they had satellite locations and seemed to go all out so if they decided there's not much value in SDCC then they definitely didn't think that last year. Hard to read it as anything other than "bad times ahead."

Hadn't heard about that, but it's not surprising. It was literally the next logical step from the price hike. The shareholders and even Brian cannot possibly have their heads so far up their own asses as to believe deeply worsening economic conditions in the US combined with Super7 raising their prices (among so many companies raising prices on all kinds of goods) wasn't going to severely impact them. The two obvious steps are raise prices and lay off anyone you feel you can afford to lose.

My guess is that it's really nobody most collectors are aware of anyway. I doubt Kyle is going anywhere since he's the main guy on their most successful line. I'm guessing a lot of ReAction designers, packaging guys, etc are gone now. Especially if they're planning to make/design less product over the next couple of years, they can probably spread that work over fewer people.

To be fair, though, I don't even really know why anyone goes to SDCC. I mean... there's economic reasons why post-pandemic certain people have pushed so hard for us to 'get back out there to the office' and all that kind of stuff. But it made so much sense for virtual toy shows to replace the sweaty piles of humanity that most companies agree are overpriced to be at (from what I've heard behind the scenes, at least).

I'm not convinced SDCC has any value -within- the industry anymore. And the biggest value it has to most toy collectors is reveals, and we don't need a giant, expensive convention for that.

SDCC is just an eyeball magnet. We're all pretty engaged as toy collectors, but the less engaged are more likely to notice something revealed at a big convention like SDCC than via a direct video on YouTube. It's value though is severely limited and it's impossible to say if the companies that actually go there and spend money to be there are seeing any actual returns. The people who actually gain something from being at SDCC are probably artists and small vendors who get to benefit from way more foot traffic than their own store or websites typically get, which obviously toy companies don't give a shit about. Though I'm sure there are also plenty who lose money each year doing that. And it's a boon for the local economy, of course. If I was running a midsize toy company like a Super7 or a Mondo I'd probably only do a year or two at SDCC as I was establishing my brand, and then once I felt like my market share was basically secured I'd pull out and just do web delivery. A major company like Disney can pull out of SDCC and have it do nothing to them. I would guess they probably have a sweetheart deal with the organizers who very clearly need them more so than Disney needs the exposure. To them it's just a status symbol and a hype machine.

New wave of Thundercats Ultimates was leaked today. "Coronation" Lion-O", Red Eye and Wizz-Ra. Not going to lie... Lion-O with a crown and cape seems pretty skippable. But Red Eye is obviously a huge want/need. Now we are just one Lunatak away from completion. And Wizz-Ra looks awesome. I could see myself wanting more than one of those potentially.

I'll be tabling at SDCC for the first time. Is it worth it? For me, yeah, even as an advertising expense, and to get into a new audience. But if I make as much $ as I do at a con like NYCC then it'll be worth it for the cash as well, plus networking, parties, meetings, and it's just a lot of fun and great vibes.

I imagine the benefit for Super7 would be meeting new customers and PR—trying to make themselves more of a nerd household name. Lots of people who aren't as online in the toy world as we are will see stuff they like there for the first time, maybe start collecting a ReAction or Ultimates line they didn't know existed or didn't know they'd want. It's how I used to get turned onto things back in the day. "Oh wow, check this out! etc." I bought a Peanuts tshirt from them last year that I didn't know existed because I saw it and liked it, and I'm someone more in the know than most. Plus it's their home city, they don't have to fly people out or pay for hotels most likely. Last year every time I went by Brian was being interviewed by someone. Their DnD popup seemed pretty busy when I went. I missed their pizza party though.

That's all to say they must be looking to cut back on every nickel and dime. Which is a bummer. I like and don't like Super7. But I don't want them to go away. I just want them to get better. I don't even know how to begin with this tariff situation, because it's possible in the next 5 days they'll be called off for whatever tangential flippant reason DJT comes up with when he rolls out of his Big Mac box in the morning and slathers himself up with orange batter. Meanwhile companies like Super7 are turned into human yo-yo's. It's sick.

I've worked in an industry that knows deep in its heart there's not much value in a physical presence at some big events going on that we traditionally took part in. The numbers don't really work out but there's just an institutional fear of losing the spot. To not being associated with the bigger event is just existentially paralyzing at times. Even if the actual tangible value isn't there.

So... I chimed in with Thundercats Ultimates news and didnt engage with the 'not at SDCC' news'... I will say... Super7 will be in San Diego during SDCC. They have a store like 8 blocks from the convention center. They may have decided to just try yo leverage their store as an 'off site' and not pay for a space on the con floor. They sold most product at the store and not on the con floor previously anyway.

It is a big change though. I'm just hoping they can stay viable long enough to finish up the Lunataks in Ultimates.

I'm in for Red Eye and Wiz-Ra! Lion-O now with hat will be a wallet pleasing pass. That said, I'm not sure how many more waves will happen so I do wish it was another Lunatak or Berzerker.

Thanks for the reminder, I'll pop by their store when I'm in town.

Just copy and pasting my post from the other board.

Wave 14 images have leaked:

Definitely a solid wave. Only 3 figures again probably due to the size of one of the figures.

King Lion-O looks great. Looks to be the newer mold. Not sure the alternate head is different enough to be warranted. Otherwise lots of good accessories. Gotta get that heavy hitter in the wave.

Red Eye is another good offering. Also another Lunatak!!! Overall not bad, but I kind of wish the disc on his chest was removable, or at least offered as an accessory. If anyone should have light up eyes.......haha like Super7 would spend the money on a single use mold.

Wizz Ra!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now we're talking. Looks great, and finally a justifiable inclusion of multiple hands. Love the energy hands and the lightning shooting hands. Head sculpts look good, but the render almost always do, it is the execution in production that will tell the tale.
