ML Mini Comic wave

I have the whole wave in hand now. The only one that I truly love is ROM. The others are just OK. If I had to rank theM personally from best to worst from my perspective it would be ROM, a huge gap, Ultimate Iron Man, Ultimate Miles, Daken, Adam Warlock and Banshee last. I don't hate any of them, but ROM is the only one that I really, really like.

Rom is the "effort" figure of the wave for sure. Seems to me this is more of a trend where you have a new wave and five of them are as minimum-effort, low-cost as they can get away with, and one of them is actually good. I remember with the Zabu wave I found myself wishing I cared even a little bit about Icarus because he got the VIP treatment for sure (new, sculpted detail that probably wouldn't be reused, multiple varying paint aps). The Icarus fans were treated very well. In another wave we got figures like Speedball with no speed balls and then a really good Herald Thor with ravens......I just wish we were getting a little better than 1/6 in terms of high effort releases.

Can anyone give me an idea about what's cool about Rom? I saw that comic get released on the stands, but nothing about it appealed to me.

This is not me trying to poop on Rom; it's me trying to figure out from the outside what might be cool about the character or fictional universe that I missed out on by not trying it.

Rom's got a tragic story arc like Beta Ray Bill or Norrin Radd; he sacrificed his humanity to become a weapon to save his people. He's a badass space knight who fights shape-shifting aliens.
He also appeared as a guest in a ton of Marvel comics in the 80s, so he had a lot of exposure in places that fans already loved.
And the comic character was based on a chunky Parker Brothers electronic toy, so there's some nostalgia there too.
He may be an acquired taste, but, if you're familiar with him at all he is a very cool choice for a figure, and his execution is superior.

overall the figure’s not doing any more or less than expected
For better or worse, this is how I'd describe most Legends. I kind of like getting imports more because you never know what to expect. They can blow you away (like Figma TotK Link) or massively disappoint you (Figma Elden Ring Raging Wolf). Each approach has pros and cons.

I picked up the Rom Omnibus when the figure was announced. I also never read him back in the day. fingfangfoom described it well, he's got a cool/classic backstory and gallivanted all around the Marvel U. Plus, I just like the big boxy robot design. Same reason I want an M-11 from Agents of Atlas.

It's the biggest downside of Legends, for sure. When they do put out something that's not from the buck pile, I usually love it (Rom, Wong, Titania, Odin, most BAFs). And a lot of the reuse works well enough that I have no complaints. But figures like Banshee and Adam Warlock not even getting sculpted boots just absolutely kills me.

Ultimate Iron Man may not be everyone's favorite, but lumping him in with low effort figures is wrong. I'd argue that more effort was put into him than ROM.
People don't seem to be digging how he turned out, but Miles is all-new as well, right? So it's really half and half, which I think is closer to the reality of most ML waves.

I forgot about Ultimate Iron Man, he looks good too. 1/6 of the figures having effort put into them was not an exact estimate but I wouldn't make it too much higher.

Aesthetics are all subjective, but for me Rom = cool 80's robot looking guy. That's really all I know about him. I'm open to trying his comic though I was in a similar situation with Crystar. Knew nothing about him, thought he had a cool look, bought the figure based on that, tried his comic which didn't quite hook me.

Miles is all new, but not what many would consider a big improvement over previous versions. He got the pivot torso and butterfly shoulders, but got those janky hips.

I knew there was a reason I liked you. :)
Thanks. Right back at you.

I know it may sound silly, but I will never consider the Avengers complete until we get Red Wolf, Two-Gun Kid, Phantom Rider and the World War Two Whizzer. Jarvis and Rick Jones are must haves, too. And the reason I feel that way is because I'm a child of the 60's and 70's. I cut my teeth on the Silver Age and became a comics-for-lifer during the Bronze Age.

And I will keep asking for Western characters, classic monsters, Golden Age heroes and villains, non-costumed civilians, supporting characters, humor characters (I WILL have my Dr. Bong) and all those other oddballs and long shots. We know we're going to get Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Wolverine, Spider-Man, the FF and all the stars. It's the D list that we need to campaign for. To me, boards like these are a god send and a golden opportunity to make our voices heard by the people who can make our wants happen. And at this year's SDCC, I will make sure they know we're here.

Yeah, I haven't gotten mine yet but that seems to be the consensus. Still though, that's 3/6 completely new figures. Not saying we should throw them a parade, but credit where it's due.

What body is Daken on? It looks like a pretty standard ML buck but I can't really place it.

I mean shouldn't we at least be defining "low effort" as meaning very few new pieces. If something is all new it might be not to one's taste or even outright unsuccessful but it isn't low effort.

I received the ones I ordered today (Banshee, Warlock and ROM). Glad to have a Banshee. Still don't love the tabs for the "wings", but again, I don't have a better idea (at least not one that would keep the price as low as it is). Warlock is fine; I wish he had an alternate head with a different expression. ROM is very nice and the only one of the three with no QC issues. Despite never having read ROM, glad I picked it up. Overall, I would have preferred a different accessory to the mini-comics, but I'm not fussed about it.

Daken is the evolved Sunfire body, pinless joints. I think he has different, bulkier arms though. And new, taller, Wolverine boots.
