Last Movie Watched

I'm taking my 13 year old to Jaws tonight. I'll report back as to how that went.
Well. That didn't go as planned. After the opening attack he was done. I told him I would let him know when something was going to happen so he could hide his head. He did for most parts, but watched the majority of it. I didn’t say anything for the “we’re gonna need a bigger boat” scene so he would get the full experience of it. He liked parts, and REALLY liked Hooper.

Ah well. Can’t win them all.

Man, that's wild to hear. I must have been 6 or 7 when I first watched it, and saw all kinds of stuff before 10 (Q The Winged Serpent, An American Werewolf In London, Alien, Salem's Lot, most of the Hammer and Universal flicks) so I'm surprised at a teenager being fazed by something so tame these days.

I watched the original Alien with my 12 year old son last night. I expected him to think it was "old" or "slow/boring", but to my delight he absolutely loved it. It was fun seeing his surprise at
the chest burster scene and the reveal that the Xenomorph was on the shuttle.
Some years ago I worked for a bit as a night desk at a college dorm (bills gotta be paid), and as part of it I set up a movie night to show the RAs at the dorm some stuff. They were all 16-18 or so years younger and so I got to introduce them to a lot (and I think turned some in to movie fans). Alien still rips. 10/10 movie and despite it's seeming ubiquity in pop culture, basically nobody younger than 25 has actually watched it on their own (and why would they, it's a dad movie). Still hits like a freight train with new watchers.

M3GAN 2.0 - I decided to watch this with zero expectations due to online chatter. I actually enjoyed it a lot. Good pick up from the 1st movie and was just the dumb fun I was looking for.

I have a theory that realistic fear/pain on the face of a victim and not seeing what is happening (so imagining it) is worse for kids than seeing it directly shown. So while as an adult we think that the initial attack is not explicit, that makes it worse - whereas Quint being chomped on almost isn't as bad (but still bad).

I remember seeing "The Black Hole" when I was about 12 and the sequence when Maximillian kills Anthony Perkins character - you don't see the spinning blades go into him but see his reaction and it freaked me out. Very similar scene.

Oh, man! The Black Hole. I believe that was the 1st film that truly disturbed me as a child. I had been scared from films before, but the creepy vibe throughout and that ending I just couldn't wrap my head around... Ha! That film stuck with me long after I saw it in the theater--in the worst way. And I saw Phantasm at the drive-in. LOL!

I think that can be true for adults as well. Sometimes what you don't see is more disturbing because your imagination fills it in and maybe worse than what they could show.

I saw The Conjuring: Last Rites yesterday. It was pretty good. It had some legit scares in it.

If you enjoyed the other movies in the Conjuring series you'll probably like this one too.

Jurassic World: Rebirth

Holy hell, how does this look worse than the original in places? I swear some of the dino tails looked like they were done on an Amiga, and don't get me started on how fake some of the backgrounds look. Anyway, the actual film itself was a big pile of meh but Dolores was adorable, and despite everything, I'm kinda happy it's done well purely for Gareth Edwards' sake.

I forgot to mention that there is a little bit of a post credits scene at the end. Nothing earth shattering and it's not a set up for another movie, but it still adds a little bit to the story you just saw if you want to hang around for it.
