Marvel Legends Gamerverse

Ehhh, you have to be careful there. The pantone stuff is for printing clarity/continuity. By then it was common enough for folks to view Batman as blue (if for no other reason than the Adam West show), but you can't take a print guide like this as the definition of what the color would be in-world.

Either way, a blue Batman is also at this point a standard variation on his suit.

Well if that’s not good enough, there is always this little excerpt from World’s Finest comics

Maybe I'm just a bad comic book person, but I literally have never thought the blue costume was black, I'd just see Batman in blue and think "ah they put him in the blue costume this time" as opposed to say, Superman's hair or Venom's skin (or, heavens help us, Storm's white/black/silver costume debate) where it was up for interpretation. I've literally just always seen blue and black Batman as different as red/bue vs. black Spider-Man. One's lighter and for lighter stories, one's more grim, both are cool.

Yeah... but this is decades after the character came out and he wa swidely accepted as blue by then. Heck the Adam West TV show had made the costume blue already by that point. Its clear in his first appearance the costume is black... but by the mid 1940's the colorists were just doing it mostly blue... the battle had long been over by the 1970s

I’m just trying to make the argument that if it is either referenced by editorial or by a writer in the comics, it’s firmly established as canon. It’s settled we don’t have to bicker back and forth over nuances like this anymore. As far as the creatives at DC are concerned, Batman has worn costumes that are specifically blue and grey and they are just as valid as their black and grey counterparts

Yeah... I think that is definitely a thing that eveolved, but I'm pretty confident the change didnt start that way. The limitations of the coloring process resulted in lots of blue in place of black... and at a certain point its easier to lean into how things look on the printed page than to tell everyone 'it's not how it looks'.

Right, like I said, by then the blue was already cemented. I'm just saying the pantone thing isn't about local color, it's about printing. I wasn't arguing with your interpretation.

This is exactly it. And that change will be evident on any "black" costume that uses a color as a highlight because over time you will inevitably have artists who use spotted blacks less as part of their style, meaning the color takes over.

So I got Omega Red/War Machine today and I'm whelmed. I'm not overly invested in either of these two characters, but new and shiny gets my squirrel-like attention every time. The Omega Red is a nice upgrade as far as colorway, face print and pinless arms. I do wish he came with an alternate portrait ala the Wolverine boxset. War Machine looks cool with this blue pearlescent plastic and new tooling. Again, a Rhodey alternate head would have been nice. Alas, up on the shelves they go.

For me I didn't have Omega Red but I've nearly pulled the trigger on the last two releases and regretted not picking him up both times. I would like an extra portrait but I looked at the older ones and figured ehh, will I ever really display him in a way where he isn't snarling? Probably not.

As far as Batman’s costume is concerned, I go by the Jose Louis Garcia -Lopez style guide from 1982. There is a Pantone color swatch legend and all the various heroes have specific color palates for their costume and Batman’s is marked as blue

This is awesome, thank you for making me aware.

I'd love my own copy.

Regarding Venom's blue, I do wish it were a little brighter like the MvC sprites. It's the right hue of cerulean blue from what I can tell, but the wrong value. I don't have him yet so this is all based on images and reviews.

On that note of comparing these figures to the MvC sprites, War Machine is an interesting one. They really half-assed the legs, didn't they? So the new upper body sculpt looks like MvC art, which looked nothing like the sprite, which was an Iron Man palette swap. That part is fine. But the legs look nothing like the game art or sprites. Just a really lazy decision from Hasbro. I wonder if anyone has swapped the legs/lower body from the Fan Channel War Machine...

Yeah venom’s blues do look somewhat muted compared to his in game sprites. Actually they are a lot closer to his player 2 colors. Which I don’t terribly mind. If he were the bright baby blue I couldn’t imagine conniption fit that people would be throwing online. And frankly I would be inclined to agree that baby blue rarely translates well on a 3D figure unless it’s in certain cases

My full shelf of Skeletors would beg to differ!

EDIT: Random thought but Wolverine and Juggernaut can not get here soon enough.

Skeletor is not a baby blue. He’s more of a periwinkle.
Baby blue is like an ionized blue.

Here’s an example. This is a rough color to look at even on a fabric swatch
