NECA - General Thread

I listened to that whole podcast today at work and I don't recall hearing anything about Dinosaurs in it. He only brought up Gargoyles because it was something he had painted that he was proud of and wasn't going to be released. The host did gush about some big new thing he saw at their studio that they're putting out next year, which is NECA's 30th anniversary, but of course it was just hype for something they couldn't actually discuss.

I'm such an easy mark for stuff. I was watching an old Peter Cushing interview about the difference between horror and fantasy and now I need the Van Helsing NECA figure of him. I'm ridiculous.

It is your duty to represent the whole history, at least in broad terms, of filmed horror on your toy shelf.

I really hope we can get a Cushing Frankenstein while they have the likeness rights. A couple of those films are by far my favorite Hammer films, and the franchise blows away their Dracula one--as much as I love Lee.

Maybe the assumption was that since they had given up the license for Gargoyles that they'd given up all Disney?

This is why I like you. You make me feel less bad about being an easy mark for stuff myself.

If anyone has Van Helsing - how easy is swapping the torso and arms? I'm not sure how I'd want to primarily display him. I dig the "down to business" rolled up sleeves look a lot but haven't done big parts swaps on a NECA figure before.

Also, 100% have the Jaws figures in my cart right now because it's my favorite movie, but worry we won't also get Chief Brody.

I went ahead and ordered the two Jaws Ultimates last week. I figured when Bruce comes in I will want to pose them with him. I'm not too worried about Brody honestly.

Truthfully I'm debating NECA Jaws or LEGO Jaws and then I'll commit to ordering. But I did make a very specific Matt Hooper joke during D&D this week and now I desperately want a Richard Dreyfuss figure.

Dinosaurs being cancelled was brought up by me. It was shared by Blake Wright of Toy Collector magazine during one of his appearances on Toy Anxiety this year.

Dinosaurs is certainly quite niche, and we know companies have even had issues with stuff like the Muppets, but I can't help but wonder if NECA shot themselves in the foot with that one. Had they just committed to doing the entire Sinclair family right out of the gate rather than this tepid crap of only dipping their toe in the waters with Earl and Baby then maybe it would have worked? I know too many collectors who see a line like that start off with just a character or two and play the waiting game so they don't end up with an incomplete set. We need at least Robbie, Charlene, and Francine to feel good about the line and if there's no assurance from a company of even that then why bother? Maybe it wouldn't have worked, but these companies are so risk averse that they set themselves up for failure. Like Super7 and their D&D line that appears to be dead, just show you're making all of the kids! I bet you'll sell more of wave one if you just show the rest of the main cast are coming. Especially since Hasbro dropped the ball on that one by releasing some very mediocre figures already.

The torso swap was pretty easy, actually. I was a bit worried too. As much as I do like the trenchcoat, I think I wanted to add a little splash of color to the horror shelf, which already had a lot of black and white, so I went with the "down to business look". I can't remember if I heated the new torso first- I wanna say I did, but I couldn't swear to it. If I remember correctly, the arms are already attached to the vested torso, so it was just the ol' twist and pull with the old one. Because the arms are attached, though, I wanna say I had an easier time putting the new torso on by doing the ol' T-pose and grabbing him like a corkscrew to push him down. Felt a little loose at first, but it seemed to tighten up after a bit (take that how you will). He's a really nice figure, and I really appreciate them doing the swappable torso versus just a whole new version.

Dinosaurs was never going to sustain a line. I understand wanting the whole family, but I'm sure plenty of people feel like they only need 1 figure to represent properties on their shelf. So just Goliath. Just Earl. There's gotta be a large drop-off in sales from the main star to other characters, even if they're regular characters. For instance, Homer Simpson likely sells multiple times more units than Marge. But I do understand the idea that announcing a full family of characters could entice people to get the early figures. It's part of the reason the Super7 Ultimates Simpsons line failed in my opinion. At the very least, NECA put out a couple of Dinosaurs figures to put representation for that show on collectors' shelves. Wonder what other niche properties they'll go after next.

They have the chops to do almost anything I think. They're one of the few companies that showed they can master cartoon stuff, creature stuff, and regular looking human stuff. So it's fun speculating.

I'd love to see them do:
  • Smurfs - maybe released as 4 packs of smaller, 3 inch figs that come with 1/10 or 1/12 scale tiny slug Smurfs as well that you can use with other lines. They've done some great little mini creatures in their TMNT line. You can use the hell out of the molds, lol. Also a Smurf house playset would be sick.
  • My Pet Monster - could just do the main monster as a one off, like ALF. I think he'd sell out in seconds.
  • Danger Mouse - I still need to pick up the third party Count Duckula at some point. This line is probably too niche, but might sell a more in the UK.
  • Nicktoons line - Doug, Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Rocko, maybe one line with just the mains.
  • Pirate of Darkwater - Again, probably too niche, same with Dinosaucers, which I'd also love.
  • Troll 2 - just a couple of the nightmare fuel goblins from Nilbog.
  • Bobby from Bobby's world
  • Honestly, I wish they'd get MOTU or Thundercats. Snowballs chance but I'd go DEEP with those properties if NECA did them similar to their toon turtles line.
It would be funny to create a Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue shelf, but I'd need George & Barbara Bush figures. With Michelangelo, of all characters, scolding people to not smoke weed.
