You Ever Get Tired of This?

I’ve always tended to be someone who focuses on just one thing at a time. Usually, that obsession is triggered by some long-wanted figure or character getting announced.

But over the last few years, that has been happening with multiple lines at a rapid pace, and it’s been overwhelming. In 2026 already we’re getting a 1989 Joker from McFarlane, an S.H.MonsterArts of Godzilla 1975 (my favorite Godzilla), a Black Series Kyle Katarn (my most-wanted Black Series figure outside of the OT), and Missing Link Grimlock. All of these are borderline grails for me. And that’s to say nothing of MOTU Masterverse, all of which I’m also collecting. Oh, and the Boss Fight Hellboy figures! I forgot those were coming.

There definitely comes a point where you start to just feel like you have too much stuff. That said, I do feel like the end is in sight for me for some of this. Kyle Katarn is great, but aside from him and maybe some other EU characters if they make them, I’m only focusing on OT Black Series characters these days. For Transformers I’m only a G1 collector for characters in the movie and the first three seasons and I’m 2/3 of the way to having a definitive collection of those in CHUG scale. The Godzilla stuff comes out at very long intervals. And I’m not planning to move on to Mattel when they get the DC license - when McFarlane is done, I’m out.

I think it's a testament to this group that there is support and logical discourse about it, even owning failings.

I saw a post on Reddit the other day where someone was urging people to throw out their boxes and curate their shelves. Most of the responses were angry knee-jerks that they're definitely not hoarders and who are you to tell them they're hoarders? You don't know me!

Nobody said anything about hoarding.

The call's coming from inside, nerd.

"WE Decided??? ... All I wanted was a Pepsi, and you wouldn't give it to me!"

Hey Poe!

I'd just popped in here to say while I don't really get tired of collecting, my dopamine hits are far less than they used to be when getting a new figure. I equate that more to my mental health than collecting, though.
Oh yeah. I mean, I turned 47 last month. The last "new" line I got into - something I had never collected or been interested in as a kid, like Transformers/MOTU/Star Wars/Godzilla - was Mezco's Hellboy line, which was (gulp!) twenty years ago now. Even with all the cool stuff coming out now, I think it's just unrealistic to try and chase that excitement I had as a kid.

That said, I know that statistically I'm dead in the middle of the midlife dip, so maybe I'll enjoy everything more in a few years. Or maybe I'll sell it all off and start hiking and woodcrafting or something! Who knows.

Welcome Poe! I actually don't know who you are, but everyone is excited to see you so I am too. Don't tell the others, but this is my favorite spot on the internet these days. Just great people, and I'm excited to see posts from another one!

I, myself, turned 43 last month. I'm finding the dopamine hits less and less with the domestic releases that I've been gobbling up for years (McFarlane DC, Neca, the occasional ML). Recently, I got a few things in from 5K that I had not really delved into a whole lot, and my entire collecting world has just exploded. I've had 3rd party stuff in the past, and it's been great, but I never really (really) got that hit until I grabbed some Maestro Union and Mety Toys stuff. I got in the Azure Lion (I think that's his name) and the Maestro Union Immortal...something or other...and holy shit, these are probably the two most gorgeous and most impressive figures in my entire collection. They are even nicer than my Hot Toys, and just typing this sentence is giving me a warm feeling and chills at the same time.
Have I discovered a new path for collecting? Will I move away from superheroes and go full-bore into third party awesomeness? Do I have Poe to blame because he's new here and newbies have to undergo initiation?

(what's that? There isn't initiation here? So that night when I went streaking through the quad, that wasn't you guys? Oh hell...)

Gotta go, I need to call a vacuum shop about a Hoover Max Extract Pressure Pro, model sixty. Very important. Laters.

Poe driving around in a convertible incoming in 3...2...

Wait... we don't have a quad? Then where the hell was -I- when I spent 45 minutes telling that guy why we all need to vote for Kylun...

Haha, no convertible for me. All that convertible money was spent on toys - toys were my midlife crisis.

And quarter-life crisis. Basically my whole life crisis.

Thanks for the motivation, ya'll. It's about balance for me- I definitely try not to get too much in one shipment anyway, but I try to space out opening things if I do. Problem then becomes I either feel a little cramped with the box taking up space, or if I get distracted by life (or just general ADHD stuff), that box may sit there for a while. Then again, the loose figure could too, so the problem is really two-fold, but we're working on that too! 😅 Especially because I may be moving in with my boo some time in the next year or so, I gotta start paring down. We're both nerds who collect, and the likelihood we'll find a place with enough room for both of our things here in NY is slim-to-none. Ahh, the things we do for love.

Old timers know he's from the other Articulated site! Points of Articulation — which now features what may be the longest gap between blog posts ever — from talk of BigBadWorkshop to a post shaming someone for stealing Marvel Universe (the little guys) She-Hulks from several two-packs with Wolverine. (A two-pack I have absolutely no memory of ...)

I just spent about half an hour cruising through the reviews from the early 2010s. It's great to see that it's all still there. It also fills me with regret all over again that I skipped out on the MOTU Classics line at the time. All of it still looks so good today.

I miss those reviews. Video reviews are great, but there’s something to be said for print reviews with still photos.

It’s good to see you here, Poe. Your former SHF Han Solo says “Hi”! 😉
