YHS/TOY ANXIETY Cryptoids?

My first thought was that was gonna be tough to pass on. Then I went to the Kickstarter and saw it's $50 for a less than 5" figure. Crisis averted.

I keep forgetting how small — and pricey — these are.

It does look fun, though.

Agreed. I try to throw in a pledge for at least one item for 1:12 kickstarters but these are just too expensive for what they are. Can't justify it.

I have no need for a Bat Boy figure, but I'm guessing this one must have a licensing cost baked in. I wonder if he'd be priced more like the aliens if not for that?

I'm already in for Shadow Mothman and a Gray, and I was tempted by Bat Boy but yeah, the price deterred me.

Only 3 hours to go on the Kickstarter. I adjusted my pledge since they added that translucent Reptoid that I only just found out about, cause I wasn't paying attention. I really wish they'd done a glow in the dark Reptoid.

So if I pledge for the Shadow Mothman alone it does *not* come with the alternate head, correct? That is only with the all-in?

That seems to be how they're doing things right now. With enough pressure from folks maybe they'll make the heads available again later...but for now, just the all ins had the extra accessories.

Thank you. I ended up not pledging. I am surprised this one did as well as it did. Figures were really pricey for retro-looking, low detail figures with basic articulation, and they're releasing at a time when much more highly detailed, better figures of cryptids like bigfoot and yeti are available. Maybe it was a successful gambit overall restricting figure upgrades to all-ins, but the lack of the extra head dissuaded me from pledging for a shadow Mothman (the only one that's cartoonish quality was somewhat obscured by its monochromatic dark colorway. Clearly a lot of love for cryptids out there and perhaps I'm in the minority preferring modern detail over retro cartoonishness.

Or maybe there's a bigger market for retro style Playmates level sculpt/articulation than you realized.

I love the idea behind it, but the execution wasn't something I really needed, so I passed. Thankfully, we had a few months of teases before the full launch, so people who might have been interested, had time to plan for it. That could also be why it did so well.

I think they originally planned on launching last year, but then the tariff nonsense struck and they had to reevaluate. I'm sure the plan was to be cheaper initially, but reality is what it is. I think it doing as well as it did is a reflection of a lot of things, but I think one is that $45-$55 for an independently produced action figure just isn't seen as being as expensive as it used to be.

With even the mass market collector stuff sneaking up on $50 SRP, it's not surprising to me at all that small-run indie offerings start there. Unfortunate and maybe unsustainable, but not surprising.

Keep in mind that they've spent the past 10 years building up a community, so I would imagine that those folks contributed to the early momentum of the campaign. And yeah, I think there is some demand for retro-style figures, action figures that look like the toys we grew up with and not necessarily "adult collectibles."

I bought 4 greys (two GITD), and a trading card. I've had renewed inspiration in putting a backlog of old trading cards and other stuff into binders recently, so the trading card seemed appropriate. By the time it shows up in a year, I probably won't care, but whatever... :)
