U.S. Politics

I've spent years writing about the dire financial straits rural/critical access/skilled nursing facilities are in and have been in and, looking at this goddamned bill, I can't help thinking about how many stories we're going to be seeing about these facilities just evaporating in the coming years. They might as well have just slit peoples' throats for all the harm this will do.

Honestly, at this point it's time for folks to start updating their advance directives to make sure they don't suffer at end of life, cos ain't nobody gonna be there to save you.

Chums... I'm starting to lose hope. I get that Trump will never feel more powerful than he does now. He has both houses of Congress and the Supreme Court, and Republican constituents aren't banging down their Congressperson's doors yet. But this is bad. This is the culmination of the conservative project. In the 80 years since the New Deal, this is what they've been working for. Destroying the social safety net, creating a police state, detaining and deporting political enemies, and enslaving the working class.

The funny thing is, the president doesn't even know what's happening. As long as he can golf, watch TV, and be the subject of it, he doesn't care.

I foolishly thought I'd be somewhat insulated from it given my geographic distance from DC and my region's wealth and political leanings. I think that's impossible now. Gutting Medicaid, starving people, and closing rural hospitals is going to have a nationwide impact. I still think Democrats get another bite at the apple, but this country will probably be relatively destitute by then.

Yeah. I can't remember if I mentioned it upthread already, but I've been writing about how much trouble those rural / critical access hospitals are in for years because of underfunding and this bill will absolutely drive them into the ground. Folks living outside of major metropolitan areas will just die of third-world warzone shit because there simply will not be anyone to help them for hundreds of miles. Old people are going to die of starvation, neglect, and worse. Kids will starve. The inhumanity of this bill is staggering, and this country DOES have enough money to take care of everyone if we weren't swarmed by selfish assholes.

In my darker, nastier, times I would say too bad no service for those in the GOP rural areas that lost their hospitals and services. Democratic services for those who live in the Democratic areas. No outsiders, and hey you supported governments that wanted to sue/imprison doctors, nurses and patients for seeking out treatment you didn't like. So now that your hospital is gone and you have limited, to no, options....too bad stay in your area and suffer. Find some leeches.

Again , that is my darker side because I know not everyone in those areas are GOP/Maga lovers but left leaning people would suffer as well.

The disgusting part is that a lot of these damaging parts of the big beautiful bill don't actually go into effect until after the 2026 midterms. So that the GOP/MAGA can pretend like it isn't harmful because they won't feel it until after the midterms and then the GOP can turn to trying to blame Democrats for all the ills if they manage to take back the house.

I just keep looking at this bill and trying to see any way it helps the mouthbreathers who support him and it's so blatantly a power grab and tax break I have to believe Trump voters are the worst kinds of masochists. Please daddy take away my healthcare, I want to die from preventable conditions screaming your name daddy, please ruin my life. Like at least previous scumbag bills by other administrations you could see the verbal fellatio that tricked people into thinking it wasn't a gift to the super rich. This one says it right on the tin.

AS I was reading the condemnations from the medical community I got a call from my therapist letting me know he no longer accepts my insurance. Not related and not like I can't find another, but what timing.

Every time our healthcare system tries to claw itself in the right direction, usually someone lops off a finger from the hand gripping the rail. This bill skips that part and just shoots it in the face with a shotgun. The only people who WON'T suffer from it are the ones who need it least.

MAGA republicans will sign themselves up to get shot in the face as long as they think [insert marginalized group here] will be shot twice.

This is right.

This bill will impoverish the entire country, but it will also exacerbate the urban/rural divide. There's only so much damage you can do to cities in a globalized economy. The rural areas around them will suffer instead. Joe Biden's policies catered to these areas. Through brainwashing, media dishonesty, and, yes, their own values, they decided a second Donald Trump presidency would be better than a Harris one.

Biden thought his signature achievement, the Inflation Reduction Act, would be safe from Republicans because it prioritized investments made in Republican strongholds. He didn't realize that there's no low Republicans won't stoop to. If there's a hole to slither in, they'll find it. Condemn thousands of their own voters to death? "Where do I sign?"
