U.S. Politics

Aw Christ, Chooch. You know what, that's fine, I'm gonna stop feeling bad about looking to fiction (that is clearly based on reality) for inspiration.

Fiction is the only thing that keeps me going through this.

I mean fuck, we Californians have as our best line of defense right now [checks notes] Gavin fucking Newsom, who likes to yuk it up with Charlie Kirk these days so that he can unctuously appeal to “both sides” like the chickenshit self-promoter he is.

We have no heroes in real life.
Except for just plain regular folks out in the streets, doing their best.

One of my fears with all of this is that Trump turns Newsom into some sort of hero. I don't want that guy anywhere near the top of the Democratic ticket in the next election.

And probably the only reason he is showing backbone in this particular instance - it's good for his future to fight like this now - it's good for his optics.

Luckily, it is also good for us. For once a politician's goal is the same as protecting their constituents!

Nah. I’ll never trust Newsom.

He’s not on our side and his goals are not ours. His only creed is Newsom.

He can fuck right off.

Oh, I have no trust for him. Just watched his "arrest me!" video and it's pure theatre. He learned his lines, he found his angle and light and performed his monologue for the camera. Didn't feel like a human feeling and relaying actual feelings, just reciting lines. Even his use of profanity was weird.

But right now this attitude is useful.

Hard for me to think of anything Newsom does as “useful”, but I suppose it’s better than probing Trump’s anus with his tongue like most other pols and news agencies right now.

It boils my blood when I see "Rioters throwing rocks at ICE" etc. Fuck that. When the oppressed fight back it's not rioting.
You mean I shouldn't feel bad that the men in full protective body armor are getting hit with little rocks? All they have to defend themselves are a full arsenal of lethal and non-lethal weapons.

Yeah, I've seen an uptick in a lot of friends saying not to rely on or hide behind the often overly-sanitized stories of fiction, and while I can definitely see their point, I think it's more important than ever to be privy to these kinds of stories and how they play out. Stories, be they comics, books, tv shows, movies, etc. are meant to be digested and meant to send a message. Unfortunately, media literacy is at an all-time low, so I think we need these stories. Whatever helps people and inspires them to join the fight in any capacity. Obviously it's important to know where the line is- don't downplay something to the point that you trivialize it, but if putting it into layman's terms helps someone understand the complexities of what's going on, by all means.

Obviously I keep returning to Andor as a guiding light; not only Nemik's manifesto which is, in my opinion, one of the most inspiring things I've read in a while (maybe ever), but because it literally tells the story of what's going on right now. The Ghorman Massacre is an unflinching portrayal of what instigates these kinds of riots and how propaganda is spread to get people on the side of the oppressor. Bix's first arc in s2 was a metaphor for the kind of oppression and fear that many immigrants feel. Many people think that Tony Gilroy was prescient with his ideas, and not to downplay his talents at all, but he merely chose to showcase something that happens at nearly any given time in this world. Honestly, Andor could've come out at any time, and we'd have a handful of recent examples to choose from and hold up as a real-world mirror. And a lot of the people I saw praising Andor just a few weeks ago are now the ones turning their nose up at the protestors. It's okay to not agree with every single method- there's always a few extremists in any group- but to disagree with the idea and action itself in reality, while praising it in a work of fiction is just laughably ignorant.

Again, not to trivialize anything, but the riots right now feel very Ewoks vs. Empire, and we all remember how that turned out. At the end of the day, it's those base human things that win out- simplicity, goodness, justice. All the weapons in the world can't kill a strong enough resolve.

Ewoks vs. Empire
That makes me hungry.

As Vandal Savage said: “I am not averse to the taste of human flesh, sir!”

But seriously: ICE would make for a nice, cool meal.
I’m only kidding a little bit. Or maybe not at all.

people are sharing videos from other protests and claiming its LA. People are sharing video of other cases of militarized policing and claiming its LA. Lots of fake news.
So... this video I saw is not actually LA right now?

Newsom's a jackass, but I have to credit him with saying the thing every politician in power should be saying right now: Okay, you big fucking bullies, put up or shut up. Come get me, tough guy. He's absolutely angling to be a presidential candidate, but someone had to say it, and honestly, a wealthy straight white guy doing it so he takes the first punch is leveraging that old Default Game Character mechanic to do something right. Don't always make the people already under attack take the first swing.

Yeah . . send in the Marines, indeed.

Still: the more this bumbling loser tries to flex, the more he demonstrates how weak and pathetic he truly is. This is a disobedient child’s tantrum, just with access to military hardware. Like is it scary? Sure, it fucking sucks to have the U.S. military mobilized against you, definitely a lifetime first for me that’s for sure. But none of this makes Donald more personally frightening, nor more worthy of respect. LA isn’t suddenly going to go “ohhhh shit I guess we better fall in line and lick the catheter-piss from his boots because he’s JUST SO TOUGH AND INTIMIDATING.” lol nope. He’s still Big Mad at us because Hollywood rejected his razzie-winning ass and because the richest and most powerful state in the union has consistently told him to fuck off.
That ain’t gonna change, Mr. Drumpf. You can put a bullet in me personally, and I’ll still die laughing at what a damn joke you are and have always been.
