U.S. Politics

Saw a thing that we are actually 6 months into the recession for America, but it's not actually reflected in the stock markets where people would react to this because the AI bubble is distorting everything for the moment from the ground level.

It's not really my scene so I can't say one way or the other, just thought I'd share.
I think it was Market Watch that reported the AI bubble is 17x the size of the dot com bubble and 4x the size of the subprime one. Probably not a good thing.

The AI bubble scares me almost as much as dying under a fascist regime because I spent a year and a half writing up reports for a team investigating the efficacy of generative AI and every single one of them said it's essentially vaporware and corporate leaders and investors aren't smart enough to know they're being bamboozled. I described it like building a house on a foundation made out of marshmallows. That shit keeps me up at night and I got out of tech almost two years ago for my mental health.

You should write a piece on how everything is seemingly cult indoctrination these days. Politics. Tech. Crypto. I'm serious, I'm curious when critical thinking or at least open mindedness gave way to these all in systems.

May be an image of 1 person and text

I used to thumbs up when you guys post articles just as a "I read, thank you" or "I agree with your sentiment" but liking feels fucked up, but I read, thank you.

Also, big fat fawwwwwwwwwwwwwk on this shit!!!!

It really, truly is everything. Even pop culture. The cult-like behavior in every aspect of our lives is insane.

And yeah, we need an "acknowledged, thank you" emoji for this thread alone. "Saw it, made me upset, appreciate you sharing relevant information off to start day drinking."

I don't drink. I fear what would happen if I started given my clear addiction issues with food and toys. That said, the downfall of the United States might get me to start.

Or maybe I should open a liquor store. Those seem recession proof.

I think the concern early on was people using a dislike frivolously just for like... Opinions they disagreed with etc. but something like that could work.

I don't drink.
That is amazing and awesome, no sarcasm.
I fear what would happen if I started given my clear addiction issues with food and toys.
Really smart move then. I've never had interest in drugs but given how I know I am and family history, I know I can never try any because I'll probably be all about that after.
That said, the downfall of the United States might get me to start.
Oh damn. Well, it's a good time for it.

Probably brilliant. Sell lottery tickets and you'll make bank!
One of my coworkers and I were talking about opening a comic store as a "retirement" job, and tried to come up with a side business to make it break even. Like having a comic store/cafe or something. Consumables are the one thing the Internet hasn't really taken away. I even joked an adult book store/comic shop wouldn't work!

Heh. I quit drinking before MAGA got started, always look back and am a bit bemused I never went back through all . . . this.
And as someone who studies cult-think clinically, I wish I had better answers, but the unfortunate truth is that folks ON ALL “SIDES” are getting culted up and it is truly terrifying.

I believe folks have tried the cafe/comic shop idea. Seems like they were more into selling trades, which makes sense. I shop at Mile High Comics and I'm pretty sure I'm one of only a handful of people that still buys new floppies.
