Tracking toy tariffs

My hope (and yes I realize what a tenuous little string of hope it is) is that eventually some of the Republican senators will find their backbones and balls as the economy crashes and burns all around us.

If things get bad, and I mean truly bad, some people will wake up and his popularity will continue to slide.

So if this goes into effect and it does end up being 54%, we'd be looking at:

Super 7 $55 standard figures now $85

Standard $25 figures like Classified and Legends $39

Neca Ultimates around $60

Please tell me I am wrong and why. I would love to be wrong here.

This makes total sense, but some people really seem to forego self preservation. It's like those wasps that lay eggs in a host's brain and it rewrites how they behave to protect the eggs rather than themselves.

THESE ARE LIKE CANADA PRICES!!!!!

No, you're not wrong. I was on Bluesky this evening reading economists and experts on the tariffs. They're terrifying.

My wife and I make decent money. I have a budget, but I can usually buy what I want while staying within my means. I'm not sure what my collecting habits will be if the tariffs continue for months on end. It really depends on the price of everything else.

During the first Trump administration, I often felt like I was going insane. Like I was seeing things that no one else saw. When I talk to like-minded people, I realize it's a universal feeling.

Trump 2.0 has obviously been worse. Circling back to what @JakeEkiss said on the last page, if Trump were a Russian agent, would he be acting any differently?

Some fun things I read tonight:

Thank you for sharing those, TSI. Yeah, sometimes I feel like I'm Donald Sutherland in Body Snatchers, but I REALLY appreciate this group. I don't need to discuss this stuff often, but sometimes you just need check temperatures of those around you and realize you aren't alone after all.

I guess I better take another look at what I projected to buy this year (based on which marvel movies are coming soon and such), and see what I REALLY want on the shelf anymore. My wife and I do fine, but I have a set 'fun money' allowance each year. I really enjoyed getting so many GI JOe classified figures for 'cheap' though!

I just don't see how we continue to function as a country with this kind of economic nonsense.

But it does feel better to be able to talk about it because I'm surrounded by people in my every day life who live in ignorant bliss. So I'm glad I made this thread. If nothing else maybe it gives those of us who need it a place to vent and keeps a lot of this talk out of the figure threads so those who want to avoid it can do so.

Is it because you need to be able to enjoy reading long form content to navigate these forums with decorum that keeps the seemingly endless opposing views from entering here, or is it the invisible hand of moderation? (the market version is now dead)

This is the thing I encounter most often. Not even people with opposing views, people who are just totally checked out. Don't know who's in government, or what they're doing, or how it affects them, and they aren't interested in learning. They might vaguely repeat some party's talking point here or there, but they don't know why they're saying that, or what it means. Like, I've directly asked folks when they spout a line "what does that mean" just to see and half the time they either murmur because they don't really know, or they give an answer that is completely incorrect relative to what the party thinks it means.

or is it the invisible hand of moderation?
Heh, so I'm tangentially part of a different community for ttrpg stuff and they moderate *aggressively*. To the point where someone in that community jokingly said at one point "We don't want an inclusive community. We want an exclusive one. One that excludes assholes."

I'll be honest. I'm just refusing to engage with the chance they got their numbers from AI. I don't even care if it's true. If I think about it too long my brain will boil out through my ears.

But but but there were trans people on girl's swim teams. Too many unserious people were allowed to vote and joined up with the racists and religious whack jobs. What a dangerous combination.

I've mentioned this on a non-toy message board, the biggest price increase that has annoyed me the most has been my car/home insurance. It's up over 60% in the last few years with no claims. With tariffs on cars and parts, that will also make car insurance go up further because they will be more costly to repair and replace 🔪🔪🔪.

As far as toys go, I have a handful of items on preorder in China, some with a deposit. So that's something else we have to deal with. Even if we wanted to cut loose some preorders, we might still take a hit.

Damn. You just reminded me that I have those 5k Toys Contra figures already paid for coming later this year. That’s a big chunk of money to get hit with a tariff.

I have a few things at Amiami coming later this year that I’ll just have to eat whatever the cost is. But I don’t know if the alternate option will be any better because even if I order from BBTS/Amazon, they’re going to be raising their prices too plus I’ll have sales tax. So even if it’s remotely close to still import stuff from Japan, I’ll probably suck it up just to get stuff much earlier.

I have that Not-Bebop TMNT figure preordered with a deposit down somewhere. Can't even remember the place or the company name.

The problem with insurance is, during Covid, the states put a moratorium on rate increases for all insurance companies. That was lifted in the last couple of years, and it's been a free-for-all for increases. Some companies are doing the decent thing and only taking 3-5% increases, where others are just jumping the shark and going 20-30%. It pisses me off, and even more the people who call asking why their premiums have gone up so much when they don't have any claims, or tickets.

Re: insurance, I live in Southern California, right where what fires caused so much damage and could have caused more, and immediately after my insurance company tried to cancel my homeowners insurance. They made up absolute bullshit that this was not my “primary residence” (it’s my ONLY residence and has been since 2008) and if my elderly boomer parents didn’t have a longstanding relationship with the agent I would have been toast. Even the agent couldn’t explain the cynical moves of the higher-ups.
I’m also in a position where my “day job” has me thinking about and dealing with redhat-based horror on the daily, which means I feel awful when I am thinking about it and even worse when I realize I’m not, because I always feel like a should be. Even my “night job” in regional theatre is currently haunted by the economic foolishness and social cruelty that abounds.
I’ll be real: I don’t just love toys these days, I *cling* to them for sanity and solace, and also a bit as a ‘fuck you’ to the dominant paradigm that wants to try to tell me what a “real man” should and shouldn’t want and do and be.
I feel cowardly and weak for saying so, but getting cut off from that joy definitely worries me. It feels very selfish to worry about such things, and yet.
All of this is to say that I am incredibly grateful for this community, and what seems to be a strong start in building a *real* community where we can speak of such things.
It’s hard to keep the assholes out: I remember times on the ‘old board’ when we’d get some real bad actors shredding on “woke” and talking large about redhat-adjacent stuff. I come from the goth and punk subcultures, and there’s an old story about a punk bar where one guy wearing some Nazi regalia comes in to drink and the bartender immediately throws the guy out even though he was being “nice” and not causing trouble. Story goes, of course, that the bartender has experience with how this goes: one shows up and acts polite, then he brings a friend and then that friend brings a friend and before you know it your bar is full of Nazis and you run a Nazi bar now. I think that’s even more true (and more difficult to deal with) online, and this place is off to a great start with that.
I hate to catastrophize, but keeping fascists out of kind spaces is now a necesssry reality.
Woof. Anyway, it’s nice to have a space that feels safe, and to have people around who seem committed to preserving that safety.

We will get through this. Together.
