Third Party Figures

It's funny. I'm always telling people that I'm not really into anime. But I think it's like a defensive mechanism because the anime that became popular in mainstream is the stuff I'm generally not into or at least not familiar with. Naruto. Fullmetal Alchemist. Titan. And I have nothing against it except that there's just something about the way the '80s and '90s stuff looked that appeals to me as an artist and most of the modern stuff just doesn't hit me at all.

Occasionally you'll get a chainsaw man or Dan Da Dan that does hit me.

Pretty solid list! Which Motoko do you mean with classic? Original movie? Or manga? We'll more than likely get a manga-esque Motoko soon to coincide with the new anime. And we do have that Hyper Body Motoko that just came out, but I imagine it's not the go-to look. I've always wanted an SAC style Togusa, though. Hopefully we get him and Batou from Hiya Toys. I'd also love an Urd from Ah! My Goddess, VHD ofc (we just got good pics of the upcoming third party D today, check 5K). And Ranma and any other Rumiko series desperately need (affordable) figures.

GE999 is a good call though. One of my biggest toyline pipe dreams has been a line that does all the lead characters of Shotaro Ishinomori, Osamu Tezuka, Go Nagai, Leiji Matsumoto, etc works. Harlock is my most wanted from Leiji.

I get it, though. Personally, I have a pretty easy time rocking with anything from any medium so long as it's fun and/or has a character tailored towards me, and always enjoy some bits and pieces of all the biggest current mainstream stuff. But I wouldn't be absolutely in love with anime/manga if it weren't for Guyver, Kazuhiko Shimamoto, and all those aforementioned oldhead authors.

Chainsaw Man and Dandadan are pretty easy things to point to as standouts, they're made by guys like us who love the things we do. Half the time I was reading Chainsaw Man I was thinking "Oh, this guy LOVES Devilman". I still need to read Dandadan, but I'm a huge fan of Ken Takakura especially (had an on and off crush on him for over half a decade) so I'll 100% get something out of it.

Original Movie. For my money the only good figures are the SHF SAC and and hooooopefully that Hiya that was due last fall.

But Manga would be dope if they can nail the Shirow of it all. Thanks to Madureira GITS and Gunsmith Cats were formative influences on me. Drawing Motoko and Rally was like how everyone else did Goku in study hall.

I'd love to expand into other anime, but there's so much of it it can be overwhelming.

I forget the company that did Nausicaa, but I really want a Kiki.

These next 3 are actually figure model kits, so they need to be cut off the sprue & assembled.

This is likely an early copy of the Fury Toys monkey minion. I ordered sets of the other monkeys that are being packed now.

Vampire Hunter D

There’s a third party VHD coming, they showed him at Wonderfest or whatever show all the third party guys in Hong Kong show at!

Also, I feel Ryoko is my great white whale for having a figure from every anime that truly meant something to me growing up. It’s weird it’s probably one of the few animes Americans know because it aired HEAVILY censored on Toonami, and shit, Big Todd even included Ryoko (and a much lesser degree a very shitty Tenchi) in his “Anime in 3D” line which had them standing beside Akira, Trigun, and Ghost in the Shell… but today like nothing exists merchandise wise

I wonder if it’s a thing where Pioneer just doesn’t have a licensing department so you call them up wanting to make figures and they’re all like “anime? Nah, mate, we make cameras! (Hangs up)”, it must of had some cultural relevance in Japan they did SO MANU REBOOTS, I think it lasted into mid-aughts at least…

I almost bought the “this is just Ryoko but we’re Disney try and sue us” Pop from Owl House just to have some vague representation on the shelf (side rant: what’s with modern cartoons thinking they can just steal anime characters and call them their own?! Witch from Owl House is Ryoko, Panthro in the TCats reboot is Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop, Parasite in my Adventures with Superman is a Berserker EVA Unit 01… like seeing something on TV doesn’t mean you can just have it!)
