The Reading Room

I raised an eyebrow when I heard about them. It feels like a peculiar fit, but I can't wait to read them.

I also read The Blacktongue Thief since I last posted in this thread. It took me a while to get a feel for the tone/humor. Good book.
The followup, the Daughter's War, is pretty solid, too. Sort of a grimly poetic horror fantasy prequel to Blacktongue. I keep hoping he revisits that setting soon, though I'm in a phase right now where if a series has too many books in it I'm put off because I don't want to commit.

To be honest, I didn't love Blacktongue that much, but I've REALLY liked Christopher Buehlman's horror novels that I've read (Those Beyond the River, The Lesser Dead, and The Suicide Motor Club).

I didn't know this thread existed! I read all the time, sometimes serious stuff, often space nonsense (affectionately called). Right now I'm reading "Eichmann in Jerusalem" though.

I randomly picked up and just finished "Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow" by Gabrielle Zevin and it helped me understand the appeal of video games in a way I never have. Very interesting to even an NPC like me. :)

I'm almost finished with The Children of Gods and Fighting Men by Shauna Lawless. Top tier. Read it.

For you dumb nerds that need more information than just me telling you to read stuff: It's the first book in a series set in medieval Ireland. The twist is that this is mythological medieval Ireland. So historical events are mostly sticking to real history. Real historical personalities. But also the Tuatha De Danan and Fomorians were real and have living descendants in the world. So, there's magic but so far the descendants can't/won't show themselves to regular humans in that way so they have to sort've hide their magic and their long lifespans.

It's crazy how well Shauna has made this work, that you can feel like you're reading an actual historical event but also ... magic.

The other thing I really like about this series so far is that the two main POV characters (it's all written in first person, which I usually fucking hate, by the way) are women. So we get the mythology and the warfare and the politics all from the female perspective as these two women try to navigate a world that is potentially hostile to them both as women and as non-humans if anyone were to find out. It's so good. Seriously guys.. read it.

So it was announced earlier this year that Marvel and DC are doing crossovers again. That to me is very, very cool. I've always had a fondness for the inter-company crossover stuff. First up is Batman and Deadpool.

That looks like it could be pretty entertaining. I don't know why they haven't done Batman and Wolverine yet. That would be like a license to print money.

I know it's only a matter of time before one of the companies pisses off the other, but I hope this continues for awhile. With that being said, I have a wishlist. You knew it was going to happen. Don't worry, I'll keep it short. We'll start with one I have wanted to see my entire life.

The Justice Society of America and the Invaders

The story has to be set during World War 2, 'natch. The possibilities here are endless. A Flash versus the Whizzer race. Captain America leading the JSA on a mission. Wonder Woman leading the Invaders into Axis occupied Europe. Sandy and Robin teaming up with Bucky and Toro. Both teams coming together to fight an Injustice Society that's being led by the Red Skull and Agent Axis. Guest appearances by Sgt Rock, Sgt Fury, Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, The Seven Soldiers of Victory and The Liberty Legion. Geez, this would have to a 10 or 12 issue mini-series.

The X-Men and the Doom Patrol

This story must be set in the very early days of both groups. Two teams of freaks with strange and outlandish powers, both groups outcasts, both rejected by the same society they have sworn to protect, and both led by a genius in a wheelchair.

The New Gods and the Eternals

A tribute to the King. Grant Morrison writes it and Dan Mora draws it.

Young Avengers and Young Justice

Nothing quite like a ton of teen angst. I think this series would make wonderful tribute to the late Peter David.

Justice League Dark and Dark Avengers

It would a lot of fun to watch Norman Osborn try and figure out John Constantine.

Sgt Fury and Sgt Rock

I have a fondness for those old Silver Age war books by the likes of Lee, Kirby, Kanigher and Kubert. It would be fun to watch the Howling Commandos fight their way off Dinosaur Island alongside Rock, the Suicide Squad, the Haunted Tank, The Losers and the Creature Commandos.

The Justice League of America and the Mighty Avengers

I know what you're going to say. Been there, done that. But this one would be different. Set the story back in the late 60's or early 70's, when the Silver Age began to turn to Bronze. When the Justice League moved out of their cave in Happy Harbor, Rhode Island and moved to a satellite 22,300 miles above the Earth's surface. When Thor and Iron Man returned to the Avengers in their 5th Avenue mansion. Have the villains be Kang the Conqueror and the Lord of Time. What an epic romp that would be.

So that's my picks. I know what you're going to say. There's not a snowball's chance in hell of these ever happening, with the possible exception of Justice League Dark and The Dark Avengers. I know that. These choices are not marketable. In this day and age you need something with the words Bat Super Wonder X Spider in the title, with maybe Lantern Flash Surfer Cap Iron. Otherwise it ain't gonna sell. Marvel and DC want to make these crossovers events and I get that. Maybe a Secret Crisis that Geoff Johns talked about in Doomsday Clock. I know that.

For me, this was just a fun little exercise. And I just want to get some fun out of this internet thingie. It sure doesn't have to be deadly serious all the time.

I hope we get tons of crossovers. Genuinely. Kind of surprised by Batman being paired with Deadpool. I mean, story-wise. I get that Deadpool is crazy popular and puts eyeballs on things. And I'm definitely coming from a place of Deadpool-fatigue. I would have liked to see Batman with someone more his speed - like a Daredevil. Or even Punisher would be really interesting. Still... I'm gonna read it, so I guess color me the fool.

Jim Lee is the big cheese at DC now, right? Maybe that has something to do with the willingness to work with Marvel more. Hope it works out for both parties so they'll consider continuing this for a long time.

Justice League Dark x Savage Avengers would be REALLY cool, but I don't know if Savage Avengers is even still a thing?

Hard agree here. Never been a big Deadpool guy, so wasn't wild that he's front and center for the first big new crossover.

But damn do I hope they just run and run and run with these. There's no end to the stuff I'd like to see.

Book-wise, what I'm reading right now is this book Ra by a writer called qntm. It's basically magic-as-sci-fi, not everyone's cup of tea I know. I'm only halfway through, but the scope keeps widening and I'm excited to see where it all ends up, as I've heard it gets pretty out there. The idea is magic is more or less the new electricity, discovered in the 70s. It's powered by mana and spells and whatnot, but studied and applied like physics and engineering. I guess it was originally serialized online, and there is a site with links to a version with a different ending and appendices on the way magic works, etc. that I'll have to dig into once I finish.

The only question I have is if I have both apps will be I be able to read these? I'm willing to shell out for paper copies, but would probably wait for a collection.

And my only question is: how will they be collected. I only read comics in trades, but if these are just gonna be a bunch of one-shots...

In the past they did 2 collections, one published by Marvel and one by DC. I believe that's how they did the recent Amalgam re-releases (although those were missing some issues).

This is a really intriguing idea. With Cap replacements being a thing all the way back to the 1950's it makes sense, even if Post 9/11 now being history for a whole generation makes me feel old.
