The Chatty Pointless Thread

My parents did a lovely spread yesterday. Smoked turkey, honey-glazed ham, sage dressing (here in the South, stuffing is something only made by StoveTop. We have dressing), deviled eggs, rolls, sweet potato casserole, cheesy veggie casserole, macaroni and cheese, cheese potato casserole, green beans, pinto beans, bread pudding, strawberry cake, heath bar cake, apple pie. I'm sure I'm forgetting something. My mom doesn't know how to not go all out. Her question for me "do you think 4 desserts will be enough"?

No one even has room for dessert after all that food!

My wife woke up with no voice yesterday, so we didn’t go anywhere (except to see Wake Up Dead Man) and ordered Chinese food and Cold Stone Creamery and watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 (because the saw is family). I fucking despise Thanksgiving, but this was a good day.

I always admire and am secretly jealous of anyone that does anything other than the classic "staples" of Thanksgiving- turkey, green bean casserole, cranberries, mashed potatoes, stuffing. Pecan, pumpkin, or apple pie for dessert. Not that there's anything wrong with all those (though how good they are really is dependent on who makes them and how). I've seen a lot of folks through the years say they had mac and cheese on Thanksgiving- what I wouldn't have done to have some good ol' mac and sneeze for Thanksgiving, if only to switch it up!

Chinese food is our go-to Christmas meal. A classic! Love me some Cold Stone too, though the one by me for some reason never gives me the waffle cone bowl that I order every now and then. Nothing worse than getting denied the thing you're craving.

What did you think of Wake Up, Dead Man? I thought it was a lot of fun. The Knives Out movies really are nice, oddly cozy Thanksgiving movies.

heath bar cake
What in the world?

We go semi-traditional: deviled eggs, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, green bean casserole, rolls, and glazed carrots. I do a Quorn meatless roast (a decent turkey substitute, at least for someone who hasn't eaten it in more than a decade), and my wife does turkey, gravy, and stuffing.

We do peanut butter pie and pumpkin pie for dessert.

Heath Bar cake is mostly for my finicky eating nephew. He won't eat any of the other desserts and my mother loves to spoil. Good cake though.

I guess someone's gotta ask it- best and worst Thanksgiving foods, in your guys' opinions?
I’m with Damien: thanksgiving food is gross. Although I’m biased because I fucking despise the holiday itself.

That said, here’s some food that often gets served at thanksgiving that I like:

-ham with hollandaise sauce
-pecan pie
-Toll House chocolate chip pie
-homemade Chex mix
-cranberry sauce

. . . that’s kinda it. I don’t like turkey, I don’t like whipped potatoes (fuck you, those aren’t “mashed”), all those mayonnaise-dressing “salads” make me want to hurl . . . shit, I don’t even drink so I can’t get wasted and dissociate.

Hilariously, I was discussing Thanksgiving with one of my clients last week (which meant affirming that said holiday is a colonizer celebration of genocide and conquest, which is fucking horrific and foul and shameful), and they were like “well at least the food is good”, and I was all “yes but I only get white people food, so that sucks too” and my client was like “ohhhhh shit that’s right, white people thanksgiving is nasty” and I was all “true, true . . .”

I don’t like whipped potatoes
Ugh, noooooooooo kidding. That was the most 'traditional' item I had last night and I regretted it as soon I the spoonful hit my plate. Internally, I said "oh...."
I only get white people food
This is where I really hit the jackpot since my mom doesn't cook (or boil really) anymore, so the holidays is all about my wife or my wife's aunt's cooking anymore. We're probably doing tamales with my wife's brothers, and they always insist (which I do support) she do some with her pibil recipe (slow roasted pork with a citrus/tequila/achiote marinade), pozole which is a great soup on winter nights (even California winters), enchiladas, and so on. The only white people stuff I get is my stepmom's cooking, so tomorrow will be my only turkey etc when we go to see my dad and the waspy side of the family in San Diego.
