Super 7 TMNT figures

Once again, these are figures that plainly demonstrate that Super7's approach to quality control and testing is probably to look at it once and assume the factory is just going to get it all right after that. Or, they don't even go that far and just get packaged samples and say "Looks good!"
The latter is how I've long assumed it works. I'll never forget when Brian got in the packaged samples of wave 5 basically right as the cameras started rolling (SDCC, I believe?) and legitimately didn't seem to even care beyond showing it in the package 'look how good it looks.' Super7, as a company, is all flash and no substance. Which is hilarious given how often they fuck up the flash as well.

As a big Leonardo fan, I've looked at about every photo and review of these figures since they started coming out and, given the tone of some of the reviews, I have been starting to think I'm alone here. I just don't like them. I don't see what some people see who speak well of them. They look cheap as fuck. Leo and Raph's weapons are a fucking joke. The body sculpts don't really look accurate and something just looks... off.. about them in general. The bandanas seem weirdly short.
I genuinely think these might be the worst-looking Turtles-related figures Super7 has made. I struggle to turn my nose up at almost anything Turtles related, and somehow I also genuinely have less than no interest in ever buying any of these, even at a 50% discount.

I think a lot of the cheapness comes from the approach. Kyle mentions in the interview I posted a couple pages back that he really wanted to go for the show style and in the show they just don't really look great. They're stocky with a really round torso and there's not much color to break up the look. I do think the heads should sit higher and the transition from plastron to whatever that is under the arm is bad. And Leo and Raph's weapons look cheap. And I agree that the bandanas are likely too short. I think the licensing/key art for the short is what people remember first and it's where I think these designs look best. I'd have based my toyline on the best looking version of the characters and not the lesser versions that needed to be drawn over and over again, but that's just me. Just like how if I were NECA I'd do my toon turtles off of the original opening title animation. I don't fault Super7 for the choice, it's their call and their toys, but that's my more subjective take. I can say they don't have that shiny look a lot of toys possess, but they definitely don't look like a $55 toy. They don't look cheaper than a NECA Turtles in Disguise turtle figure, but that's not exactly a "win" since those figures are 38 bucks or whatever those single packs cost.

Not that I'm trying to convince anyone to run out and buy these. I'm saying the opposite since they don't earn their sticker price. It puts these firmly in the niche of collectors who loved this show and have to have them, which I'm not even one of them. I'm just too curious for my own good and willing to pay for the experience sort of like paying to watch a bad movie. If these sold as well as Super7 has been boasting, then they will almost certainly get discounted eventually for those who want them, but don't want them at $55 a turtle.

So those Neca Last Ronin Michelangelo figures I ordered arrived and I pilfered the Sai from those packs and they actually work relatively well with the 2003 Raphael. They are a little on the large side and as I’ve mentioned before they have the brown leather wraps instead of red. But I don’t mind them. There’s something innately unique about them that kind of reminds me of the Dreamwave Udon inspired comics that came out around the same time as the original 2003 show and I believe Raphael’s Sai were drawn similarly to this style so I feel like I could keep this as is and wouldn’t blink an eye. Also they didn’t fit very well in his hands at first so I had to heat up his fingers and ball them up into a tighter grip and it worked out pretty well.

And also…I think these Sai could pass for the 87 likeness as well if I have to be honest. And that’s specifically due to the way the lateral tines are sculpted as they don’t have that overly prominent J curve at the top

Yeah. And looking at the Raph in the post above mine.. he has man-boobs. The show used cell-shading around the upper part of the plastron to give that 'heroic chest' appearance while still technically drawing the plastron as flat. But Super7 decided to try to give them superhero chests and no other superhero proportions and so ... manboobs. It looks stupid and the more I see it, the more I can't NOT see it. I hate it.
I just think the figures are bad. They look bad. I genuinely don't even enjoy looking at folks' photos of them, which I usually would even with toys I don't personally want to own.

I wish.

I mean.. I fault them for their choices because it is their toy that they're trying to sell to me. And they've done quite the shit job of it. It's not like this is a piece of art they made for themselves and if anyone else happens to like it then that's great. It's a product. They made a mediocre product because anyone with any decision-making power in the company sucks at their job.

I literally cannot envision myself buying these even for 20 bucks CAD. Honestly.

Super bummed for people that really wanted 2003 Turtles and this is the most they're likely to get, possibly ever. Maybe when NECA is done with 2012 and Super7 is shut down we'll see some NECA 2003 Turtles. That'll be pretty cool.

I only mean I don't fault Super7 on their choice to base the figures on the look of the show vs some other source because it's a valid choice on the surface, whether I personally like it or not. I'm not that invested in this era of turtles, I watched most of season one out of curiosity when it first aired and then never went back to it, so I don't consider myself the target audience. Those who were into the show might want screen-accurate turtles. Super7 is certainly hoping they do.

And yeah, the pecs do resemble man boobs. Turtle boobs. Toobs. They've got toobs.

Tried seeing if Super7 would replace the head for my Donatello as he has a green splotch on it. The good news is it looks like Rudy survived the layoffs, bad news is they won't be sending me a new head. I was told to try cleaning it off and if it doesn't work I can do an exchange. I don't want to deal with an exchange.

Why an exchange? Isn't it literally easier for them to just pop a new head in the mail? These guys are the masters of always making the worst decision.

I would not be the least bit surprised if Super7 was not forward-thinking enough to have spare parts on hand for such an occasion. Even still, it probably would make plenty of sense to cannibalize an unopened figure since there's bound to be requests for replacements of other stuff from customers.

The apparent death of the vintage-inspired line has me looking at what I have and seeing if there's anything I didn't get that I wanted to. The answer is "not really," but one figure I was interested in was the Battle Damaged Foot Soldier which I found on clearance for 40 bucks so I figured "Why not?" Never got the original Foot as it looked too shiny and I heard a ton of complaints about that specific figure breaking a lot. I have no idea if the reissue was any better. This battle damaged one though is pretty good. It's got a generous amount of paint so it doesn't look cheap. Looks like the torso is new, right shoulder, left shin, and the new heads and hands. Most of the robo sculpting and silver paint is nice. There's silver "slashes" in places that look just okay since they're not sculpted in. The new endoskeleton right hand could have been sculpted better too as there should be gaps between the fingers. I think they should have done a more open, clawing, gesture rather than this more relaxed one. I like all of the heads and the katana and broken katana are both fine (same katana that came with Leo). Both guns look cheap though. The handgun is just all black while the rifle is gray with a spray of black on the end like it's been burned. It looks really cheap as the gray is just bare plastic. He also doesn't have the proper wrist hinges for his gripping hands and he doesn't have trigger hands, so that's stupid.

If I had been more impressed with the line overall - I would have grabbed the battle damaged Foot. It's a cool idea and seemed like a mostly good implementation.

For me, there's still a few figures I thought about picking up but never did. Now I'm waffling on whether or not to bother. I'm actually thinking of maybe trying to track down a Rocksteady at some point, just to have both of them with the Turtles and Shredder - as that would be the majority of my S7 display, really.
BUT, I'm also considering selling Bebop instead and reducing my S7 collection instead of adding a few final pieces. For the first time ever, I may actually let market value make the decision for me; if I find a cheap Rocksteady, I'll get him. If Bebop seems to go up in price, I'll sell him. Whichever happens first determines where my collection ends up.

Still refusing to buy Rapper Mike until they at least solicit Heavy Metal Raph, though. Otherwise I'm happy with just Punker Don and Classic Rocker Leo.

That's how I am with Slam-dunkin' Don. I liked those sports turtles as a kid, and I think the Super7 Slam-dunkin' Don looks fun (even though they really should have included a flight stand), but I'm not getting a sports turtle unless I know there's going to be more. I'd need hockey Leo, baseball Raph, and wrestler Mikey, but that's never going to happen. If Triceraton ever plummets to 30 or lower I might get that one. Otherwise, I think I'm good with what I have

I'd pick up Rat King and Triceraton if they had a pretty substantial price drop but the need to complete this line has dropped for me since I know they won't be going any further.

Yeah - Triceraton and Rat King are really the only ones besides Rocksteady that are on my 'I'd like to have that' list - but none of them are really so important to me that I'm not considering just calling it quits instead.

Slam-Dunkin' Don seems like a cool figure but I have no interest in that at all. I might have gotten a Hockey Leo just because I had that one as a kid and so there's that nostalgia tug.

The lack of Heavy Metal Raph, though, might go down as the biggest travesty in Super7 history. Aside from firing all of their staff so Brian can keep making all the money to make the stupidest decisions on earth, at least.

If Brian really did fire the staff solely because of tariffs and the tariffs do end up getting struck down permanently by the courts, then this is kind of like the ending of "The Mist".
