Well . . . Rowling openly says that any financial commitment from folks to her work means support of her garbage, so it’s hard for me to separate art from artist here.Harry Potter isnt the problem. Rowling is just a pos.
Honestly: I’m not big on separating art from artist anyway. I go back and watch any Joss Whedon thing and I can just smell his disgusting misogyny all over it, Avengers very much included, unfortunately (didn’t much like that movie in the first place, but there are lots of Whedon things I did love that now feel icky to me even if I do revisit them). And I’m a *huge* Neil Gaiman fan, but it’s hard not to look at things like the Calliope story in Sandman and not go “ohhh, there it is” now.
But Rowling particularly has done so much specific harm by advocating for and helping to finance and pass so much anti-trans hatred, even into law. And unfortunately when I know what I know about her loathsome views, it’s hard not to go back to her work and see a lot of incredibly troubling shit percolating in there.
And holy shit: Kevin Spacey. Mm. I dunno. Haven’t gone back to any of his stuff after all the shit came out.
Like I can’t go back and watch any of Victor Salva’s films because holy shit once you know he’s a pedophile it’s impossible not to see it all over his films, especially stuff like Powder and Jeepers Creepers. He and Whedon have a lot in common in that there are confessions hidden all over their work, and it is fucking gross.
At the end of the day, folks need to make their own decisions about this kind of thing, but for me, *especially* if the person is still alive and trading off of their work, it’s incredibly hard for me to return to their art.
Like HP Lovecraft? Fuck that shitty dead racist, we’ll just claim his art for ourselves and piss on his memory, literally if possible. That’s not so easy with some of these living folks.
