Selling Toys - Horror Stories & "Happy" Customers

I've been sorting through things for the toy show, and my spreadsheet currently has 294 items.

Many items are either $5 or $10, so that's where the bulk of the numbers are coming from.

I still have more to go through, so that total is going to increase more by the end.

I'll give you 20 bucks for the whole lot. Final offer.

Is this spreadsheet online for us to peruse somewhere? :)

On a separate note: what is the current thinking and/or etiquette on when to provide feedback as a seller? Personally I'd prefer not to provide feedback until the buyer does. And from a practical perspective, I can't really review the buyer until I know they're done with the transaction anyway.

It in a Google sheet, but it's not ready to be shared yet (I have a few items I know I have and want to sell, I just haven't found them yet).

I never leave feedback first as a seller. If nothing else, when a buyer leaves feedback, I know they actually got it. It was delivered AND they have it in hand, not someone else who noticed a package on a porch. And I set it to automatically leave feedback when a buyer leaves me feedback.

I had a guy message me about seven items I have listed asking me to combine them into one. I told him I don't know how to do that, but all that added up will probably be about the same shipping cost as the heaviest item alone, so just buy them and I'll refund the difference. He said no, end the listings and make an all new one just for him with all those items together. It's all piddly shits so I'll end up making $18 after it's all said and done. And I noticed he's in another country, so... nah, fuck that. I blocked him instead.

It's tough because what you're kind of describing here feels less like reviewing a buyer and more like withholding the potential for punitive review, right? I can see why someone -wants- to do that. You want the option open that if they leave you a bad review, you can leave them a bad review (basically).
And also - a buyer can do everything right and then turn into a flake once the item is in their hands and such. Withholding the review gives you some leverage to at least not be screwed over by saying the buyer is great only for them to not be great. Waiting for them to leave a review first ensures a closed loop where they can't come back after you leave feedback and start complaining or demanding money back or whatever.

But also - sellers use that to leave bad or no feedback for people who have legitimate complaints. So, again, it's basically used punitively. You only get good feedback as a buyer if you leave good feedback even for a bad seller.

I generally assume the buyer should leave feedback first, that being said. But I can see the argument for why sellers should leave feedback once the buyer does what's expected of them, since that's really what you're supposed to be reviewing. Did they pay immediately, or did they drag their feet is like 90% of what buyer feedback is even about.

I have sellers leave me positive feedback as soon as they ship the item. Makes sense. On ebay, you can't leave negative feedback for a buyer, so if they leave me negative feedback, I can't do it back at all. But yeah, I feel kinda like a chump leaving positive feedback for someone when I ship the item only for them to pull a "I never got it" thing when tracking says it was delivered, etc.

Absolutely.

Likewise, I feel like a chump if I buy something, pay the second I'm supposed to, and I get no feedback or bad feedback or whatever because the item shows up broken or otherwise damaged, or doesn't show up, and the seller is pissed off to be called out on it. Ultimately, isn't that why eBay took away the ability to leave negative feedback for buyers? Specifically because sellers were using it punitively against people that left them negative feedback, deserved or not?

Probably, yeah.

I got an item I bought yesterday and the guy had simply put postage on it, no tracking. I messaged him letting him know if I was a piece of shit, I could have claimed I never got it and there would be nothing he could do about it, and I know because that happened to me as a seller and I'll never ever ship without tracking again no matter how much any buyer whines and promises they won't say it didn't arrive.

I'm admittedly kind of a pushover when it comes to feedback. As a buyer, as long as the person ships the item, it's packed well enough, and if I interact with them at all, it's pleasant, then I'll leave good feedback. As a seller, I'll admit, for whatever reason, it just always slips my mind to give feedback. I forget until something reminds me, and then I'll go back and leave feedback for however many buyers all at once. It's nothing personal, it's just that I don't normally equate transactions to feedback. As someone who used to work retail and food service and had to push those surveys on the receipts, I only ever really leave feedback or fill out the survey if it helps the individual.

I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've left negative feedback, and unless they really deserved it by being a dick, I often feel bad about it after. 😅 I had one guy reach out to me after I left negative feedback and he was super apologetic and hit me with his sob story; true or not, it definitely worked on me, so I changed the rating (though, to be fair, he did also right his wrong, so that counts).

This reminds me, though- I probably have about half a dozen or so buyers I should go leave feedback for.....
