ML Mini Comic wave

A couple of years ago at SDCC, I mentioned the western heroes to Dwight. He said he actually pitched the idea of a boxed set that would include Phantom Rider, Red Wolf, Two-Gun Kid, Kid Colt and a modern character created by Gail Simone called Outlaw. The set would also have included a horse.

Alas, the idea was shot down by the other members of the team because of the potential cost.
This would have been perfect if you substitute Rawhide Kid for Outlaw.

Super sad this didn't happen :( I really wish the other guys would look past their preference for all things X and give us something outside the box like this western set. Or Invaders. Defenders. Monsters. Well you get my drift...

I find the lack of Agent X love in this thread most disturbing...
(Sidebar, I was looking up the Ultimates to refresh my memory of that roster and the Blue Marvel et. al. Ultimates cover popped up and argh, comics America Chavez, Hasbro. Why has there never been a comic America Chavez yet?)
America Chavez has been on my top 10 for at least 5 years now - I was going to say 10, but she's only been around since 2011 so I'm not sure if that's true. Either way, they need to get to her soon!

I know I sound like a broken record, but of the comic figures that get made I think the classic characters far outweigh any modern or even 90s looks. By my count we got something like 3 dozen "classic"/80s or earlier looks in 2024, with about half of those being new characters. I'd say that's pretty solid.

We came so close.

It's a shame because in my mind, Two-Gun, Red Wolf and Phantom Rider are necessary for the Avengers, Kid Colt is just cool, and Outlaw is a fun character. Plus, y'know, a HORSE. Hasbro could get SO much reuse out of that mold. They really need to look into that at some point.

UGH! This and the Invaders boxset Dwight pitched to the team just hurts.

However...

All of these characters have had their own comic books or are featured (although Phantom Rider was Ghost Rider at the time), plus the other missing western character - Rawhide Kid. Wouldn't it be great if at least one of them was in a Mini-Comic Wave 2?
-I could have easily kept going with Outlaw Kid, Firebird, Texas Twister, Shooting Star, American Eagle, but I exercised some self control...

Ok, the size of the weapons on this cover is really something. Like there is no way this artist had any photos of them in scale because these are all minimum 30% bigger than they should be. Look at thas SPAS 12!!!

Opened the rest of the wave and it really is great. Ultimate Iron Man is a surprisingly good figure considering how little I care about the source material. Its well done and looks fantastic. The Daken figure is a solid upgrade over the previous version. I prefer him with the maskless portrait, mostly to differentiate more from Logan. Miles is whatever... another Miles figure was a bit of a yawn, but they jad to have a Spider-Man

And of course, Rom is glorious. I love having this figure so much. It makes me long for more classic Marvel licensed characters in the line.

My Banshee and Adam Warlock from Deep Discount started moving in shipment. I didn't realize Deep Discount warehoused out of Kentucky so that makes me want to use them more often since that is a quick shipment to me. Iron Man from Pulse also came in (definitely NOT a quick shipment these days, what used to come from Georgia and be here in a day now takes over a week). I have no intentions of getting Miles because I don't need a 4th version of a character I'm only familiar with from the PS5 game and the jury is still out on Daken and ROM and whether or not I'll try to pick them up at some point.

This Miles is really the weak figure of the wave, and among Hasbro's poorest offerings. The one I've had on display is the one that was repainted from Ultimate Peter Parker, I forget which wave. My favorite one is the Gamerverse one, as it has a unique sculpt and is pinless. But comparing this Miles to those? It's not contest, this was a downgrade, even if it has more articulation. I'd consider swapping parts, but I don't want to mix pins with pinless. Strange idiosyncrasy.

Adam Warlock, Daken, and Banshee are all about on the same level with about the same amount of effort put into unique parts.

ROM is nice, and I wish I had the same appreciation for him as most people here. I just have no attachment, and he doesn't look cool or interesting to me, despite being a 100% new sculpt. Part of me even resents the figure for getting so much attention, when Banshee didn't get sideburns on his screaming head, Adam only got one head that isn't a neutral expression, etc.

Ultimate Iron Man is far and away my favorite of the wave. Night and day difference between him and Hasbro's original attempt. I'm using the Gamerverse Tony head on the figure, and it fits perfectly both in position and style.

That's actually two figures from the Annihilus wave that are redone in this wave. We have Emma, we need Hercules in the strap boots and Planet Hulk. X3 Beast also came in that wave, but I'd rather not get a redo of that figure and instead get something akin to how he will look in upcoming films, or even in the post credits scene from The Marvels.

I've got extras of Adam and Banshee coming from Deep Discount, and Pulse delivered my extras of Iron Man, Miles, ROM, and Daken, and shipped Adam Warlock. Still waiting for Banshee from Pulse. I could probably still use a third Daken.

If anyone has not read the Gail Simone/Udon Deadpool run along with the Agent X spinoff, I would highly recommend it. It's a ton of fun, and it got at least a nod in ML before with the extra Taskmaster head modeled after his appearance in this book. I think the exaggerated weapons here are very much on purpose (maybe they're compensating for something?).

Robo advocated for years for Agent X to get made in the line. I'd still love to see him someday!

Maybe, but boy they look silly. Like, there's comedically big real guns you could use in place of those and get a better effect I think.

Man I would have begged, borrowed and stole to get that set. I think it is at least more possible to get some Marvel Western heroes now more than ever with how deep in character selection they are starting to go. I'll never stop beating that drum.
