McFarlane DC Multiverse

Agreed on all of that, but those Schumacher films were so far removed in terms of tone from the Burton movies that it almost doesn't matter. If Billie Dee was in the exact same Batman Forever movie that we got, would it have made it any better? Maybe? I guess? But that film had a lot of issues. One of my biggest gripes was that Jones' Two-Face was just trying to match Carrey's Riddle in terms of over-the-topness and it just got to be too much. Maybe Billie Dee would have played it different? We'll never know. But Jones (and Carrey) were both on the "it" list of actors at the time so of course they get their superhero movie. Heck, that's a tradition that's still going 30 years later.

Anyway, this is the Billie Dee Two-Face that I would love to get. It's super niche. I know not everyone would need this to consider their movie collection complete, but hope lies in the fact that Todd has done super niche figures in the past and, of course.......it's Batman.

Those 89 sequel comics have all had some really great designs- Two Face, Harley, my guy Scarecrow, etc. It's a shame that we'll probably never get figures for any/all of them, especially since most of them have likeness rights to contend with. Totally biased, of course, but I'd love a Scarecrow from 89: Echoes. If they did one with the mask on, they wouldn't have to worry about the Goldblum likeness. Feels too late for McFarlane to do any of these, but maybe in the future we could get something from some other company- Mattel or otherwise.

McFarlane has done so much with legacy media that I would want to “finish” the films. Then perhaps Mattel can start fresh and perhaps not need to revisit those older films. McFarlane really did give solid 60s/80s/90s/2000s Bat-media, kind of a collection in itself.

Definitely. 89 and the rest of the Nolan Trilogy are my biggest wants of the whole line right now. If he can somehow manage to finish those up in time, I'll be content. You know some of the films are too big for future companies not to take a crack at too, but honestly, with how good the McFarlane ones are, I'd be satisfied unless said future company did something really groundbreaking.

While I will most certainly not buy any of the things you’re discussing, I wouldn’t be too quick to write anything off. Todd has shown us what he’s capable of in terms of character selection. The only constraint now is time. Bob the Goon and Vicki Vale just might be achievable.

No insult intended to anyone, but I’m just not a live action superhero fan. Came to terms with that years ago.

Same here. I don't buy movie figures either. I like comic books first. I like the movies too, but the comic versions of the characters are like the "real" versions to me.

In my mind, movie figures are just figures of actors cos-playing as comic book characters. But that's just me.

That's how I mostly look at live action / animated / video game figures also, especially knowing that multiple actors are likely to play the same character over my lifetime. Now I still own a fair amount of these types figures, but usually only as stand-ins when there hasn't been a comic version.

Yeah, the comic book versions are the “real” versions of the characters to me as well.
Animated versions are the next most “real”.
Live action is the farthest removed from comic-book reality to me.
Not to say I don’t like live action comic book stories, but I consider them removed adaptations at best.

Yeah. Once the writers and producers get ahold of a comic IP, much of what makes it appealing to us is out the door. It’s really only relatively recently that live action comic adaptations have even tried to be more comic accurate.

Most of the old timer producer types looked down their collective noses at comic books and fans while trying to exploit the properties we all love and cherish, looking for a larger audience. Turns out the larger audience is us.

You're right about the time. If Todd had renewed for five more years I'd say the sky's the limit but now he's on the clock. I just can't see Vicki happening. Todd is just now giving us mainstream DC female characters fans have been asking for this whole time, and there's still notable absences like Black Canary and Zatana. It feels like he's doing it begrudgingly like, "Eh, I don't WANT to but I've made Batman in all of his looks since his creation so I guess I need some new material". Vicki isn't just a female, she's a civilian female. I just don't see it happening.

Those are some interesting takes on comics vs movie figures.

My thinking is comics have rebooted so often, there are so many different continuities just within the comics themselves, and the movies are just another continuity. Same with animation, same with video games, etc.

As for the live action figures, I consider buying a live action superhero action figure no different than buying an action figure of Han Solo or Captain Kirk. It's a representation of an actor in his nerd fantasy outfit portraying a character.

According to Jayger 101 (a frequent poster of accurate McF leaks on YT), his sources are telling him Todd is set to lose the DC license in mid-July of next year.

Kind of matches what I remember hearing when the news first broke earlier this year, but I know there’s been a lot of rumors and speculation since then.

That sounds right. It takes us up to Supergirl, which is what the rumored plan always was.

The good news is Todd just cranks stuff out. I pre-ordered that fallout elite the end of July and I already have it. DC figures just show up within a week of announcement.

We still have a lot of runway.

His sources say the exact same thing that was reported at the time of Mattel getting the license back? Wow.

We didn't get Lois from McF - do we really think Vicki or Chase have a shot?

July is better than January. We’ve still got three cycles to go and I can’t help but think Todd will become very aggressive in the next several months in terms of DC releases. Cash grab…sure. But this is also the biggest license he’s ever held and I’m sure he’s loathe to let it go.

Whatever plans Mattel has, I believe Todd plans to go out with a bang. It’s his personality type. Essentially telling Mattel to “top that” by putting out as much cool stuff as he possibly can before Mattel gets started and zips up the DC license in perpetuity.

That’s my hope anyway. I’d like to buy another 50-60 figures from Todd before it’s all over. The completion of the JSA is in sight and a few more Kirby figures wouldn’t hurt my feelings. Cassie/Wonder Girl fills out a basic Titans/YJ framework. And let’s see if we can knock down a few more SA classics like Metamorpho, Doom Patrol, Creeper, Phantom Stranger, Hawk and Dove, and my personal longshot favorite, Rip Hunter. Metal Men would be nice too. Box set anyone?

You know what figure Tdd could release that would make my heart melt? Granny Goodness. It will never happen but that would be the coolest drop on his way out. "Top that, Mattel!" indeed
